On the eve of the dowry, Dawson handed a letter to Hendrick to give to Candida.

My dearest Candida,

Tomorrow is the day of days. I am so excited and I am sure you feel the same way too. When we think of it, we have really come a long way. Don’t people normally say that love makes the world go round? Indeed, love can make the world go round. And the world went round this evening when I walked down to the river. There the memory of everything we have done since we met came back. It only help to endear you more to me when you think of it all. Do you still recall the story you told me about ‘The Gold and the Eagle'? Without the Gold as food the eagle won’t survive. The Eagle cannot do without the Gold. To me you are the Gold, a real treasure one cannot allow to slip out of hand. Yes you are.

You know I love you with all of me and I will prove it tomorrow. Yes tomorrow will be the day of days.
