Press Conference

John felt dizzy after entering the press conference room. Even though he had been preparing for this moment, seeing all those cameras and reporters still made him apprehensive.

The news of Leicester City takeover should have been big, the club had a history of more than a century after all. But because they had been in the championship for so long, not many people outside East Midlands were paying attention. The wider coverage was usually reserved for the Premier league teams. So there weren't many journalists from the bigger media agencies, it was more of a local affair.

Seeing that reporters were just getting seated and weren't really paying attention to him, John gathered himself and took his seat.

After everyone was settled in their seats, John didn't wait for the reporters to start asking questions. John knocked on the microphone to get everyone's attention, "I just want to say this before you start asking questions." John said in a light hearted manner to which he was responded by a few chuckles.

"I am very happy to announce the joyous occassion of my takeover of such a historic club and I hope to lead the club to new heights." there were slight murmurs in the crowd but nothing serious as everyone already knew the news.

"Now you can begin asking questions." John said with slight apprehension at how this was going to go. But he also felt anticipation in the corner of his brain.

The reporters raised their hands and John picked a young lady with black rimmed glasses and blonde hair. John knew beforehand that she was the reporter from Leicester mercury, the mouthpiece of The Foxes. He wanted to start the press conference on a high note.

"First of all, congratulations Mr. Baker on acquiring Leicester. I am Mary Thatcher from Leicester Mercury. I want to know about your plans for the club going forward." said the professional looking reporter.

"Well, right now we are focused on the current season and avoiding relegation. But going forward, we plan to achieve promotion in the next two years and create a strong foundation for the club to stay in the Premier League and hopefully win some trophies." John said in a bussiness like manner. Even though John wanted to say he will take the club to the apex of football, no one would have taken it seriously. So he said what everyone was expecting.

The reporters started asking questions that were expected and John kept replying in a bland fashion. Then a reporter asked, "Mr. Baker, acc. to the information I received, you have no prior experience in football. How do you plan to acheive the things you have said?"

Even though John knew this was true, he still felt annoyed at the reporter.

"Well I am not going to be the manager of the team or a player. I plan to hire capable peoples for those jobs. That's how we plan to acheive things." John said, in an irked manner. John knew that probably that wasn't the best way to do it, but damn it felt good.

Another reporter took the opportunity to stand up land ask, "Mr. Baker, you said you plan to hire people, does that mean there will be personnel changes at the club?"

John knew he shot his own foot with his previous comment, but he tried to salvage the situation to the best of his abilities, "There are going to be some changes off the pitch, but it's not going to affect the players or the managing staff. I think our squad has quality and we are backing Manager Kelly to end this season on a high note. Depending on the situation, further decisions will be taken after the season is over but nothing before that."

John again felt nervous about the upcoming questions, but thankfully Mary came to his rescue.

"What are your thoughts on the upcoming East Midlands derby against Derby County?" Mary asked in an attempt to bail John out.

"I think we have a chance against them. It's a derby so emotions will be running high. They are doing really well this season, battling for promotion, but I think our side is going to give their everything. As for the result, well this is football, you can't predict the results." John said trying to supress his nervousness.

"Thank you for coming, now that will be it." John said as he wanted to get out of here really quick.

John stood up and went out of the conference room. Wiping an imaginary bead of sweat from his forehead, he thought, 'Damn it's tough'.
