Luna Edgar, The Heir of the Edgar Coven

Elders' balcony

"...Luna Edgar cleared the third stage of the trial... It is time for elders to decide..."

After Hector's words, everyone turned towards the elders' balcony. There was a deadly silence, both inside of the balcony and outside of it. All of the elders and the leader of the coven had serious and grim expressions on their faces. Before the situation could turn into something else Elijah talked.

"We will announce our decision... ten minutes later. Meanwhile, everyone should take some break."

Everyone visibly relaxed after hearing Elder Elijah's words, other elders included. When the attention was lifted from the balcony all of the elders turned to each other. Elijah was once again the first to talk.

"This will give us ten minutes. We should make a decision."

"...I find it hard to make. All of us saw it. She awakened the curse mark and even deactivate it by herself. This should be investigated before we can make any decision."

"You are right, Camila. But, most of them don't know the meaning of the curse mark. After all, there are only three people who awakened it in the last fifty years."

While Elijah and Camila were arguing Eliana was furrowing her brows. No one didn't know what she was thinking but it was clear that she was pissed off.

"We will declare that she passed the trial. We will interrogate her later. We can afford any possible unrest in the coven right now."

Elders stopped arguing and they nodded. As the leader of the coven, Eliana's words were the decision of the elders' council. Camila had a worried face but in the end, she chose to stay silent. Elijah had a thoughtful expression. He noticed that there was something different with Eliana but he couldn't figure out what it was. On the other hand, the other two elders had calm expressions and didn't seem to be bothered by anything.

"We declare that Luna Edgar cleared the trial and by the laws of our coven, she will remain as the sole heir of Edgar Coven."

Every member of the coven heard the announcement of the Elder Elijah but couldn't help but glance at Luna. She had a calm expression on her face, devoid of any tension. It was scary for a lot of people. Because they knew what kind of a person she is. This was the calm before the storm.

Luna smiled at the audience. It was a mocking smile. This enraged many more people but she didn't care about them. She slowly walked out of the arena under everyone's gaze. There were many things to consider on her mind but one thing was clear. She won. With an exhausted smile she left the arena.

Meanwhile, Zara watched everything from the audience stands. Her mouth was agape and she couldn't even utter any sound while watching the trial. She did see Luna cast a spell before but this trial was in another league of its own. The spells Luna used can easily destroy an average city. And she used them without breaking a sweat.

"It's incredible. So much power... but she also has some enemies..."

Zara could notice the hostile expressions of some audience around her. Even though Luna showed her power they still seemed to be hostile to her. It was easy to notice that most of them were jealous of her but some of them seemed to be holding grudges. Especially one young witch. She had brown skin and dark orange curly hair. What set her apart from others is her standing alone and her aggressive act. She destroyed the railing she was holding when the elders announced Luna cleared the trial. She quickly left the audience seats.

"Interesting..."

'There can be in fights in every family but she looks like she wants to kill Luna. I don't if I can trust Luna forever, gaining another alternative might be useful. But is it worth the risk? Luna proved her strength and if this person could match her in power I don't think she would be this aggressive.'

Zara has already started to think of her future. The supernatural side of the world might be new to her but her first priority is always to ensure her own survival. Even among the witches, this didn't change.

She cleared the trial. She survived and killed all those monsters. She even unlocked the curse mark and control it. Tch! How can she be able to use the curse mark!? It is a forbidden technique and she even easily deactivated it.

The Curse Mark is forbidden witchcraft. It consumes the user's own essence and in return, it gives incredible physical power and the ability to use the essence of the world around them. For us witches, the ability to use the essence of the world around us is something priceless.

With normal witchcraft, you can use elemental and neutral spells. But their power is limited by the amount of essence you can use. Witches won't use their own essence recklessly because when it's depleted, you die. To solve this issue witches are hunting and stealing the essence of ordinary humans for centuries. This method of course has a lot of defects but it is currently the safest method we can use.

Things change when you can use the essence of the world around you. Firstly you won't need to worry about running out of essence since the essence of the world is simply infinite. Secondly, any spell you use will be overpowered compared to your own essence. I once saw a person who can use Curse Mark casting a basic fireball spell. The average height of the fireball spell is as big as a basketball. But her version was bigger than a single-story house. Its power was also something unimaginable for me.

There are several downsides of the Curse Mark. Almost everyone who tries it depletes their essence and even if they somehow avoid it they would go into a berserk-like state and lose their reason. These two downsides are enough to deter every witch. Almost. But somehow Luna mastered this and she can use it neither losing her reason nor depleting her own essence. She might not have the same raw power as Elders and the Coven Leader but as a threat, she just entered their league.

I need allies to deal with Luna. Hector won't help me. He hates her but he has high respect for elders so he won't dare to act against the heir chosen by the elders. Then who else can help me? Wait... There is one person. Tyler Edgar. Luna's big brother.

Most of the Coven hates Luna. The Witch Covens are traditional and liked to stick with their traditions. Witches usually stay as a single-family and their servants. But when two or three families gathered they form Witch Covens. Our coven was like that too until ten years ago. On the night of the Hex Clan Massacre, our coven received too much damage. Only the Edgar Family remained from the previous three families who formed the coven.

Because of this, our coven is trying to increase their numbers once again. Normally, there is only two way to increase the number of witches. The first one is taking witches from another coven. The second one is how humans procreate. By birth. No coven would give their members to another coven. Covens aren't hostile to each other but they also aren't allies. Basically, they don't want to weaken their own coven and strengthen the possible enemy.

At this point, Luna came up with an idea. It was three years ago when she created a way to turn ordinary humans into witches. This gave us a way to solve the problem of our decreased numbers. But as I said, witches are traditional people. When you revealed the fact that you can turn ordinary humans which they thought of as prey into the same species as them, witches were enraged. They couldn't do anything against Luna because she was already the heir at that time.

When the hate was too much Luna did something I could never forgive. She turned a witch into a normal human. This was scary enough to shut all those witches. Not just turning humans into witches, she can also turn witches into humans. She wasn't as strong as now but she had the scariest power for the rest of our kind. And once a witch turned into a human they can not become witches again. She showed it by using my brother as a guinea pig. When my brother complained because what she did to him, she cut his head off. I still can't forget his face when he died.

Tyler Edgar is an outcast. His "unusual power" caused everyone to fear him even before Luna was chosen as the heir. They isolate him and the leader of the coven, his mother, didn't make things any easier for him. On the other hand, she even made things worse for him. And the last thing I know about him is, that two years ago he tried to kill Luna in a duel but their mother intervened and send him into exile. I don't know why he tried to kill her two years ago but there is a good chance that he might still want to hurt Luna, even better kill her.

This will cause a lot of discord but I can't defeat Luna with normal means. Tyler is my only hope to get even with Luna. Using her own brother against her also sounds kind of poetic.
