If someone asked Kayler Harper what was one thing she hated in the world, she would have to say it was waking up early. If she had a choice, she would never do it. Yet here she was, unwillingly leaving the sweet comfort of her bed to get ready for a job she hated.
Shutting off the blaring sound of her alarm, Kayler dragged her feet across the floor as she entered her bathroom.
It was moments like this that made her regret the thought of never getting a blackout curtain, every morning she would glare at her soft baby blue curtains as if expecting them to magically block out the blinding rays of light from disturbing her.
After she was done washing her face and brushing her teeth, Kayler went downstairs to prepare breakfast before her mother woke up.
Sadly, things did not go as expected. When Kayler finally arrived downstairs, she was greeted by the sight of her mother cooking.
"Mom! What are you doing?" Kayler exclaimed as she rushed forward to stop her mother from operating in the kitchen.
"Would you stop that, can't you see I'm cooking?!" Her mother scolded in a weak tone, it was clear that she wasn't offended by her daughter's actions.
"I told you to let me handle all the cooking, it's the least I could do..." Kayler pleaded with her mother in a soft tone.
The kitchen was plunged into silence after what Kayler had said.
"Kayler," Her mother began, "You know I love you so please, let me at least do something in this house..." Her mother's tone turned playful toward the end as she rolled her eyes at how extreme her daughter was being.
"But..."
"No buts, go upstairs and get dressed. You do have work today, don't you?" Her mom interrupted her and ruined Kayler's mood at the mention of her job.
"Fine..." Kayler responded, deciding that it was better to give in to her mom's wishes, and gave her a quick kiss on the cheek before rushing upstairs.
She decided to hurry up and finish getting ready fast this time around. She couldn't keep her mom waiting for too long and she also didn't want the food to get cold.
When she was finally done, she went downstairs and had her breakfast. Kayler helped her mom wash the dishes before she entered her car and drove off to her place of work.
She worked at the main branch of the Fernando family's company. The company was a trading company that had many branches all across the world and unfortunately, the one she worked in was also the same one that her main boss, Wayne Fernando, also worked in.
If she was just an ordinary worker, she wouldn't have been bothered but she was his personal assistant which meant she was closer to him than anyone else in the company.
She had always tried to dress plainly to drive away their suspicions but that never worked out.
Every day she would wear a white button-up shirt and a black office skirt. Occasionally, she would wear a fancier outfit but that was because they had an important meeting. It honestly reminded her of when she was still attending school.
Kayler let out a sigh when she realized that she was already at the company. She took a right turn to enter the underground parking lot so she could park her car there instead of out in the open. Another reason for her to park there was so she could directly enter the company using the elevator that was located there.
It helped her avoid the glaring stares from the jealous girls who would kill just to be Wayne Fernando's 'personal assistant'.
Pressing the elevator button to the top floor, Kayler waited for just a short while before the elevator stopped and the doors to the elevator opened, allowing her to exit it.
Kayler walked around the top floor casually like she had been there every day, which she has.
The top floor was extremely spacious even if it only contained three offices and it was also very clean, due to the fact that her boss was a neat freak.
Kayler shook her head at how boring and mundane her days are. Her mother would always complain but she didn't like change, she couldn't handle it.
As usual, she would cater up enough willpower and tolerance to knock at her boss's door, wait for a few seconds to pass by, and after he allowed her to come in, she'll greet him and then leave to start her job.
And that's the same thing she was going to do.
She knocked.
She waited.
And waited.
"..." Kayler was silent when the realization struck her.
She refused to believe that Lady Luck was this nice to her. She had to cross-check.
So, she knocked again, and again.
Still, she heard no answer or even the cold deep voice of her boss telling her to enter.
With enough proof, she twisted the doorknob and entered. He really wasn't in his office.
"Yes!" Kayler exclaimed joyfully.
This was the type of change she could accept.
Her annoying workaholic boss didn't come to work.
Kayler let her joy show as she twirled around and laughed happily.
Suddenly, Kayler froze in her position and tripped. She didn't even bother to get back up as she let out a string of profanities.
In her head, of course.
She had heard the door open. The only person who had access to Wayne's office was only him and maybe sometimes her. She couldn't stay for long unless she wanted an angry boss.
Kayler continued to play dead. She didn't want to turn around and see her boss standing in the doorway.
If I'm still enough, he'll forget about me and I can disappear.
She really thought.
"Miss. Harper..." The usual monotonous voice of Wayne called out to her.
"Screw me over with a matchstick..." Kayler mumbled in annoyance as she got up from her position.
Her plan didn't work.
As she stood before him in all her embarrassed glory, Kayler could tell he was staring at her. If she wasn't so ashamed of her immature and completely unprofessional behavior, she might have raised her head to take in the confused expression that she assumed he was making.
But sadly, she liked her pay.
"Miss. Harper, what are you doing in my office..?"
