Chapter 25 : What if I don't want to save his life?

Goofy sat cross-legged on the bed, holding a notebook, meticulously listing down individuals who might be affected by his recent encounter with the black gang. Colleagues from the NYPD were excluded, and deemed capable of safeguarding themselves. Old classmate Chris, who hadn't been in close contact recently, was also set aside.

Remaining on the list were Auntie Wang and Cheng Jessie, relatively new acquaintances. Goofy, considering the usual plotline, prioritized alerting Jessie, assuming that criminals typically target the confidantes of the male protagonist.

"I'll talk to Jessie this afternoon," Goofy resolved, rising from the bed.

The second-hand Chevrolet sped through the city boulevard and parked at the entrance of the activity center where Cheng Jessie practiced dancing. At 5:30 in the afternoon, Jessie emerged in sportswear.

Reclining on the old car, Goofy whistled at Jessie. She trotted over, smiling, and questioned his unexpected appearance.

"Came to see you," Goofy replied with a grin.

Jessie noticed Goofy's cast and teased, "You're still injured; can you drive without a cast? If the traffic police catch you, you'll get a ticket."

"Don't worry, I won't. I'm a light and a hero in New York. Traffic police will usually cut me some slack," Goofy said unabashedly.

Rolling her eyes, Jessie remarked, "Goofy, you're shameless."

"As the best young police officer in Brooklyn, it's only natural," Goofy quipped. "By the way, are you free for dinner tonight? Let's grab a meal together."

With a helpless expression, Jessie agreed, "You've already come; can I still refuse you?"

Goofy, behaving like a gentleman, opened the car door for Jessie. Opting for a Chinese restaurant, they enjoyed a quiet dinner without any interruptions. The city had seemingly forgotten the "Light" sensation from half a month ago, as information exploded in New York, making it easy to forget individuals, whether heroes or villains.

Fortunately, Goofy and Jessie appreciated this temporary obscurity. Goofy didn't need to chase upgrades due to public admiration, and Jessie could relish peaceful moments with friends.

After sharing some words about Jessie's campus life, Goofy steered the conversation toward a more serious topic.

"Last night, I arrested a few members of a black gang. Two of them died on the spot, and the scene was quite gruesome."

"What?!" Jessie, alarmed, dropped her chopsticks, pointing at Goofy's cast. "You're still like this, and you're going after a black gang? Are you crazy?"

"That's not the point; I just can't take time to move my body." Goofy whispered, "The point is that this black gang despises me. They're talking about revenge."

"Is this black gang powerful? Why don't you leave New York and hide?" Jessie expressed her concern, citing instances of police officers being targeted by black gangs, including a detective in Hell's Kitchen who was executed on the street.

Internally, Goofy wished for the gang to retaliate, presenting a golden opportunity.

"I can't hide. As a police officer, I can die, but I can't be shameless," Goofy asserted. "But I'm not worried about myself now; I'm worried about you and Aunt Wang."

"They'll come after us?" Jessie's expression shifted, but she shook her head. "Why? I'm not like you; why would they target me?"

"It's just a precaution; don't get worked up," Goofy reassured. "I have to warn my friends."

"Is that so?" Jessie nodded, cautiously adding, "Then I won't go out at night."

"Good, Aunt Wang too. Tell her to go home early these nights. Brooklyn's night has more bad people than good ones," Goofy advised.

"Okay. I'll remind her," Jessie agreed.

After reminding Jessie, Goofy called Chris and several other friends, ensuring their awareness. Two days passed, seemingly peaceful, with no actions from the black gang threatening Goofy.

However, on the third night, Goofy received an unexpected call from an encrypted number, marked as Unknown. Instantly recognizing the potential danger, he answered cautiously.

"Hello, who?" Goofy spoke in a low voice.

A sinister voice on the other end declared, "Police officer Goofy?"

"It's me."

"Your people are in our hands!"

Shocked, Goofy wondered who they had captured—Aunt Wang, Jessie, or the nurse Christine?

"Come at me if you have the ability; don't touch my friends," Goofy replied, determined. "Come to me; do whatever you want to me!"

Unexpectedly, the caller, rather patient, sneered, "Don't worry, Officer Goofy. Come, greet our guest, and listen to this poor guy. Prepare to be heartbroken."

Goofy clenched his fists, fearing the worst. The caller then allowed someone else to speak.

"Goofy! Come save me, Goofy! Come and save me!"

"Frank?" Goofy was taken aback. "Did they kidnap you?"

"Nonsense! Of course, it's me! I'm your only relative!" Frank shouted hoarsely.

Goofy burst into laughter, forgetting about Frank entirely. The one person he neglected to remind about the potential threat was now the hostage.

At this point, the caller, regaining control, said, "If you want to save his life, just do as I say!"

Before the caller could proceed with instructions, Goofy interjected, "Wait a minute. What if I don't really want to save his life?"

The caller, baffled, questioned, "Boy, are you playing tricks with me?"

"Do you think I'm playing tricks with you?" Goofy responded, smirking.

"He is your only relative. He raised you from childhood. I don't believe you have any feelings for him," the caller sneered.

"I do have some feelings for him," Goofy admitted.

"That's right," the caller agreed.

"It's just that they're all negative feelings," Goofy quickly clarified.

The kidnapper was left speechless, not expecting such a response.

Goofy, seizing the opportunity, added, "If you want to do something to him, go ahead. I won't stop you."

The caller, frustrated, questioned, "Are you serious?"

"Absolutely," Goofy affirmed, hoping for a resolution that would end his own suffering.
