Rayne's nights had grown more restless. The further he delved into his newfound abilities and the strange events around him, the more he felt an invisible weight pressing down. Every time he closed his eyes, fragments of memories—ones that weren't his—flashed before him. People he had never met. Battles he had never fought. And something deeper, a shadow looming over him, like a predator watching from the dark.
Training at the Academy helped keep his mind busy, but even there, he couldn't fully escape the nagging sensation. Sasuke and Naruto still hovered around him, though each for different reasons. Sasuke had become quieter, more intense, observing Rayne with sharp eyes during every sparring session, every test of strength. Naruto, on the other hand, was as loud and cheerful as ever, dragging Rayne into his antics whenever he could.
But Rayne could feel it. They were both becoming stronger, and the rivalry between him and Sasuke was only growing. Still, something else was on his mind—something far more pressing than the friendly competition within the Academy.
One evening, after another exhausting day at the Academy, Rayne felt an unusual pull. He had planned on heading straight to his apartment, maybe doing a bit more training alone, but something compelled him to detour.
As if led by instinct, Rayne found himself at the edge of the forest, the same one where the kunai had almost hit him. The air here felt different—heavier, charged. Rayne slowed his pace, scanning the area, unsure of what had drawn him there.
The faintest sound of rustling leaves caught his attention. Someone was nearby.
"Who's there?" Rayne's voice was steady, but his senses were on high alert.
Silence followed for a moment before a figure stepped out from behind the trees. It was a man, older than most of the shinobi Rayne had encountered. His dark clothes blended almost seamlessly with the shadows of the forest. And though his face was obscured, the slight glint of metal told Rayne all he needed to know—he was armed.
"Impressive instincts for a kid," the man said in a low, gravelly voice. "You're sharp. That'll serve you well."
Rayne's muscles tensed. Something about this man was wrong—dangerous. His instincts screamed at him to retreat, but Rayne stood his ground. "What do you want?"
The man didn't answer immediately. Instead, he circled around Rayne, as if sizing him up, watching his every movement with cold precision. "You're… an interesting one," he finally said, his voice filled with a strange curiosity. "They said you were special, but I wanted to see it for myself."
Rayne's heart raced. "Who's 'they'?"
The man smirked. "You'll find out soon enough. But I have to say, your talents are developing quite nicely. A little rough around the edges, but nothing that can't be shaped with the right guidance."
Rayne's eyes narrowed. "You didn't answer my question."
The man stopped circling, his smirk fading into a more serious expression. "You've been watched for a long time, Rayne. Ever since you stepped foot in this village. The real question is… how much do you know about yourself?"
Rayne felt a chill run down his spine. How much did he know? His past life? His strange abilities? Or the truth about his parents?
The man's eyes seemed to bore into him, as though he could read Rayne's thoughts. "You're not just some orphan, are you? There's something more to you. Something hidden. And you're not the only one who's curious."
Before Rayne could respond, the man's hand flicked, and Rayne barely managed to dodge as a kunai embedded itself in the tree behind him. His mind raced, trying to process what was happening, but there was no time to think.
The man's movements were almost too fast to track, but Rayne's Copy Talent kicked in, allowing him to react just in time to parry the next strike. He felt the familiar surge of power flow through him as his body instinctively mimicked the man's movements, dodging and countering with precision. But even so, this wasn't like sparring with Sasuke or dealing with Naruto's unpredictable moves—this was a trained assassin, and he wasn't holding back.
Rayne's foot slipped slightly as he dodged another kunai, and in that moment, the man seized the opportunity, landing a sharp kick to Rayne's chest. He was thrown back, crashing into the underbrush.
The man didn't press the attack. Instead, he stood over Rayne, his face shadowed by the trees. "You're not ready yet," he said, his voice low. "But you will be. Soon."
With that, the man vanished into the night, leaving Rayne alone, gasping for breath.
Rayne clutched his chest, still reeling from the fight. He wasn't sure who that man was or what he wanted, but one thing was clear—he wasn't just some random Academy student anymore. There were people watching him, people who knew more about him than he knew about himself.
He couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of something much bigger.
As he stood, wincing from the pain in his chest, Rayne's eyes drifted to the kunai embedded in the tree. It wasn't just any kunai. It had markings on it, symbols he didn't recognize but felt disturbingly familiar. His fingers brushed against the metal, and for a moment, a flicker of something passed through his mind—an image, brief and blurry, of a man and a woman, both familiar and yet distant. His parents?
Rayne shook his head, forcing the image away. Now wasn't the time to dwell on cryptic visions. He had more immediate concerns—like figuring out who that man was and what he wanted. And more importantly, why was Rayne suddenly the target of such interest?
As Rayne turned to head back to the village, he couldn't help but glance over his shoulder, half-expecting the man to appear again. The shadows seemed to cling closer tonight, and the wind carried a chill that hadn't been there before.
Something was coming. Rayne could feel it in his bones. And he had the uneasy suspicion that it had something to do with his past—a past he barely knew.
And with that, the questions about his origins only grew louder. What secrets were hidden in the life he'd barely lived? And why did it feel like those shadows were starting to close in on him?
For the first time, Rayne wasn't sure if he was ready for the answers.
