~Excerpt~ She looked at him. Her gaze was resolute. "Let's date, Tinghao." The office was quiet. A cold breeze blew into the room and it sent shivers down Fu Tinghao's spine. He reached out to button the top buttons back. He couldn't believe his ears. For a moment, he feared he had heard the wrong thing. He lifted his head and he looked at her. She was looking at him quietly as though waiting for him to speak. He couldn't help but shake his head and laughed dryly. But, there was a lack of humor in his voice. "Tang Wan, it's not April Fools Day. Can you stop pulling my leg?"[1] Tang Wan was speechless. She looked carefully at him and realized that he didn't seem to be kidding. He really didn't believe her words. She pursed her lips and repeated, "I mean it. Let's date." Then, she stressed, as though to make her words more believable. "I love you." Fu Tinghao was stunned. He stared at her in a daze. It was then he felt the urgency in her words. He could sense the sincerity in those words. She said she loved him. He was unable to react, trying to comprehend her words. He felt a surge of happiness invade him. It was as though he was in the clouds. But on the surface, he was calm and his head was lowered. After some time, he looked up at her and gave a small chuckle, "Tang Wan, why do you like playing around like this? Just yesterday, you said you couldn't love anyone. I already accepted my fate that my love will forever be one-sided. But now, you are telling me you love me?" Tang Wan lowered her head as embarrassment sunk in. He was right. She had been unresponsive to his advances for a long time. And suddenly, she confessed to him. Anyone would feel doubtful. She opened her mouth to talk but he didn't let her… He cut in. "I don't love you anymore though." Tang Wan looked at him. He was staring at her seriously. His eyes were fixated on her and he seemed to be deadly serious. Of course, she had no idea he was only playing hard to get. Her heart skipped a beat. As his words sunk in, she felt a surge of panic. Her chest tightened as though there was a hand squeezing it. It was extremely uncomfortable. Was this how he felt all this while? No, she could not accept this outcome. "Fu Tinghao…" He looked at her. "I can't accept your love." Then, he picked up the light switch remote and clicked on it. The light immediately came on and the surroundings brightened. He then turned to the documents on the desk. He picked the blue fountain pen in the pen holder and stated, "I got to work." He lowered his head and began to write seriously. He didn't look at her anymore. Tang Wan was unable to move as she looked at that handsome face. She felt a strong sense of panic she had not felt in a long time. She didn't know what suddenly got into her. But, she rushed towards him and grabbed him by the collar. Then, she grabbed his chin and lifted his face up to look at her. She could vaguely see traces of emotions in his eyes too. But, she couldn't dwell on that anymore. She lowered her lips to his. She kissed him. *** Tang Wan, the beautiful daughter of the Tang family suddenly went insane after her parents deaths. The bright lights of the villa were on and every corner of the large house was lit up. The living room was Oriental styled.
There was a set of matching sofas surrounding a ceramic center table. The windows were ceiling-to-floor and lavender colored curtains were draped around the room.
The floors were coated with ceramics and they looked extremely natural and ancient. But despite so, one couldn't deny that the place reeked of wealth and opulence.
In the living room, a middle aged man and woman sat comfortably in the sofas as they watched the 3D television.
They were both relaxed and comfortable. There was a plate of melon seeds placed on the woman's laps as she peeled casually and chewed.
She continued to peel while feeding the man once in a while for sometime before she suddenly stopped and looked at him. "Ol' Shu."
The man frowned, obviously disgruntled after being interrupted. He looked at her and asked impatiently, "What's wrong?"
"Don't be angry." The woman coaxed gently massaging his shoulders coquettishly. She smiled softly and at this moment she looked like a vixen. An expression that one wouldn't expect on her middle aged face.
But, this action of hers seemed to have worked on the man because he relaxed and looked at her more gently.
She pursed her lips and brought a seed to his mouth before saying, "Old Shu, don't you think we should go visit that wretched girl at the hospital? We haven't gone at all since she was admitted there."
But she didn't expect the man's mood to sink unfavorably immediately after her words. He glared at her.
He felt as though she was deliberately reminding him that all these riches weren't originally his and he snatched it by crooked means.
"Why do you want to visit her?" he asked, distancing himself from her gently as he chewed the seed.
Of course, the woman noticed his actions. But, she was not surprised. She knew his character best so even though she was annoyed, she suppressed her disgust.
Then, she forced a smile and replied, "You know no matter what, she's still your niece. Everyone in the circle are talking about it. I keep hearing nasty rumors that our family snatched the Tang family's riches. You…"
"What do you mean by snatched?"
Yan Shu suddenly cut in, not letting her finish her words. "I worked for it. All those years of plotting, do they think it's a joke? It's not my fault they died. You don't expect me to let that immature little girl take everything that could be mine."
Then, he stood up with a huff, his face contorting in anger and shame. But, the vicious glint in his eyes couldn't be mistaken.
That's right. He was Tang Wan's uncle, Yan Shu. And the woman was his wife, Zi Mei.
He stood by the window, fuming and continued, "It's not as if I've committed a crime. I didn't murder anyone. What I did was take something from them. It's not my fault that they can't protect their own properties."
The woman smiled benevolently at his words and she walked to him, patting his back to calm him down.
She began to say, her voice laced with gentleness. "I'm your wife, Old Shu. I can't possibly lead you astray. But no matter how much you detest that family, she's still your sister's child. Those ignorant people will talk behind our back. You don't have to care but it's not good for your reputation if they keep insisting that you're a traitor."
She sighed and stared out of the window before continuing, "But, if you visit Tang Wan at the hospital, you'll change your image in everyone's mind. They will all believe that you're a kind and considerate elder. Even your path in the business circle would be even more smoother."
Yan Shu pursed his lips at her words and a streak of calculative glint flashed in his eyes. It was clear that he felt that her words were feasible.
After all, even though he had bribed and bought the shares of countless directors over the years while infiltrating the company and as the largest shareholder, he had used Tang Wan's illness as a weapon to snatch the CEO position from her, his path was still not stable.
He had issues getting any contract and most of the other company heads deviated whenever they saw him. Some company heads had cooperated with Father Tang when he was still alive so they were definitely suspicious when his brother in law took over the company.
Although it was no secret that the Tang family pampered their daughter so much that she wasn't even allowed to worry about a thing, they hadn't heard Father Tang mention at all that he was planning to let his brother in law take charge of the company.
So they were all skeptical of his intentions and wouldn't cooperate with him since they felt he was dishonest. This affected the company a lot and it was already beginning to cause setbacks for them. Although, it wasn't really showing because Tang Corps had a lot of resources.
So, although Yan Shu was obviously disgruntled by the thought of having to show care to Tang Wan, for the sake of making sure the company doesn't go bankrupt and he'd have to sleep on the streets, he decided to do as his wife advised.
But, he also realized something and questioned her, "But it's a private hospital. Even if I go there, no one will know of my efforts."
But, the woman shook her head.
"I have contacts with a popular paparazzi. I'll tell them to follow you and release the news. When the time comes, you don't need to worry about a thing and just act natural."
