CHAPTER 16
MCKINLEY P.O.V
*Just so everyone knows, it is July in this chapter. Luke and McKinley have been dating for 7 months*
Since the weather has been much warmer, Luke had decided that we should head to his parents for the weekend to join in with the barbecue they were having. I had decided to get out of work early on Friday so that we could get there Friday night and be able to sleep in tomorrow morning.
I met Luke at his place and dragged my bag out to sit next to his car before walking into his house where he was waiting for me.
"Hi." I smiled kissing him. "How was your day?"
"It was okay. How was your day?"
"Same. Got home early to pack and come over here. Now here I am." I smiled. I was very excited to spend the weekend with him and his family. His family were such lovely people and being around them made me so happy. They were like the family that I never had.
We had finally gotten in the car by 3 meaning we wouldn't get to his parents until 7 which was fine by me but eventually I was going to be hungry.
"Can we stop for some food?" He nodded as he drove and I looked back down at the book that I was reading. I had my feet propped up on the dashboard, even though Luke hated it. I was more than comfortable.
"What do you want to eat?" He asked.
"Could really go for Moe's." I answered as I looked up to see where we were. "Where are we?" I asked and he sighed.
"Somewhere." He answered. I could tell he seemed a little annoyed so I sat up straighter and put my feet on the floor.
"Are you okay?" I asked and he nodded. "I'm not really that hungry." I answered taking a sip of the water bottle that I had brought with me. I didn't want to do anything that would annoy him further.
"My mom said she got a blow up mattress that would be big enough for both of us so we can sleep on that if you want to."
"Whatever you want to do." I answered turning back to my book. The ride was quiet until my stomach began growling and he looked over at me.
"Why didn't you tell me you were hunger?" He asked.
"I didn't realize." I answered looking up to see him pulling off the exit. "There's a Wendy's down here right?" I asked and he nodded. "Are you sure you're okay? You can talk to me you know." I said and he nodded.
"I'm fine." I became quiet as he pulled into the Wendy's drive thru and ordered what we both wanted before continuing to drive. We still had about another hour until we got there.
As soon as we got there I jumped out of the car to greet his parents while he hung back.
"It's so good to see you." Liz said as she hugged me tight.
"It's good to see you too." I said as we let go and watched Luke get out of the car and come over to her.
"What's wrong?" She asked hugging him.
"My boss is just so annoying." He answered as she brought him inside and I went to his trunk to get our stuff. I also grabbed the trash and threw it away before heading to his room with our bags. I sat on his bed reading over emails that Courtney had sent me while Luke talked with his mom.
I sipped on my tea as I went back and forth between talking to Courtney and my mother to see how her divorce was coming along. Luke came up the stairs huffing and came into the room.
"Hi, baby. Feeling any better?" I asked and he shook his head. "Want to talk about it?" I asked watching him sit down on the bed.
"I don't know." I frowned. I wasn't sure why he wasn't talking to me about it. I get that he would want his mom but I was here for him too.
"Okay. Do you want a massage or something?" He nodded taking off his shirt and laying on his stomach on his bed. I sat on his butt as I massaged his shoulders and then down his back. He was very tense, I could tell. He laid there with his eyes closed and his arms up by his head. I hummed as I ran my hands all over his back and shoulders.
By the time I was getting tired, he was asleep and looking peaceful. He was so pretty it killed me. There wasn't much room on his bed so I situated myself on the blowup mattress that Liz had on his bedroom floor. I grabbed extra blankets from the closet and laid down. It sucked that I couldn't cuddle with Luke but I understood.
The next morning I woke to Luke groaned as he kicked the mattress and mumbled to himself. I rolled over and covered my face with a pillow as he laid beside me and pulled me into him.
"Good morning, my love." He said still half asleep.
"Good morning." I answered back and rolled over so I was facing him. I kissed his bare chest as we laid together soaking in the warmth of the other person. I check the clock to see that it was at least closer to 8 than it was to 7.
"Wanna go shower?" He asked and I nodded wrapping my arms around him.
"Just a few more minutes." I mumbled cuddling closer to him. He chuckled as he wrapped both of his arms around me and rested his face into my neck. "You're so warm." I mumbled trying to get him to stay for as long as possible. I heard him chuckle before he kissed my head.
"We really need to get up and get ready." He mumbled into my neck and I groaned. The last thing I wanted to do was get naked in the shower with him at his parents house. Whenever we showered together, it often ended in sex. Not that I was complaining but the last time we were here, Jack and Celeste were having sex and we could hear them.
"Okay." I mumbled moving so he could get up. He groaned as he did but I reached for him and he pulled me up. We walked to the bathroom together. He turned it on to heat it up while I locked the door and looked at myself in the mirror. He stood beside me flexing his muscles. I giggled a little before stripping and get into the shower. It was big enough for both of us but I still insisted on standing super close to him.
I watched him wash his body and hair and then move on to washing mine. His fingers worked their way perfectly through my hair making sure not to miss a single strand. His finger's could work wonders.
Somehow we got through the shower without getting turned on which was a new record for us. I dug through my suitcase looking for the white sundress I brought with me. Water dripped off my nose and hit the panties that I was holding under my chin while trying to look for the dress.
I finally was able to get dressed and get my makeup done by the time the guests were arriving.
*LUKE P.O.V*
Our entire family was piled in the backyard including some of Celeste's family. My parents thought that it would be a good idea to get to know each other. Jack and Celeste have been dating for years.
I stood at the grill with a beer talking with Ben as he cooked but my eye was on McKinley talking with some of my older cousins.
"Stop staring at her, Luke." Ben said and I looked away from her and to him. "You're drooling." He answered.
"You're just jealous that you don't have a girlfriend and I do." Ben was the oldest of us and he was single. He said he didn't really want to be in a relationship but I felt that it was a lie.
"You know why Jack wanted to have this cookout right?" Ben asked as I took a sip of my beer.
"No." I answered watching as fire came through the grill and nearly burned Ben's eyebrows off. "Why did he want to have a cookout?" I questioned.
"He's proposing today." He answered and I was a little shocked. I never expected him to do that now.
"Seriously?" I asked and he nodded as he took some food off the grill and placed it on a plate going to stick it on a table for everyone to get some. "He wants to do it in front of all of these people?"
"Yeah, apparently." Ben answered.
"Luke? Want a burger?" Kinley asked interrupting out conversation and I moved to stand closer to her.
"Sure." I answered helping her. We both sat down with our plates and drinks on the deck steps with my younger cousins.
"Is Kinny gonna have your babies?!" Kali yelled and I laughed.
"Not sure. We're still too young to have babies." I answered her in a way that she would understand what I was saying.
"Why? My mommy having a baby." She answered.
"I know your mommy is having a baby but me and McKinley aren't married. Your mommy is married." She sighed and I chuckled. I wasn't sure why she wanted us to have a baby, she didn't see me that often.
As we were all eating, Jack stood and began to thank everyone for coming and I smiled to myself. I knew that he was about to get on one knee. He was talking about how thankful he was for everyone to be there and then he stood in front of Celeste and reached into his pocket and got down on one knee.
"Will you marry me?" He asked. We all watched the two of them, waiting for her response that would hopefully be a yes.
"Oh my god!" She shrieked and cried out a yes. We all clapped as they hugged and kiss and he slid the ring on her finger. I felt Mckinley rest her head on my shoulder and I panicked. What if she thought that this meant that me and her were going to get married? What if she wanted to get married now? I was a little freaked out.
Of course I saw a future with her I just wasn't sure when that future was going to be and I sure as hell was not ready to get married now. I hope she understood that.
"That was so cute! Did you know he was going to do that?" She asked me.
"I just found out a few minutes ago." I answered her. "They deserve each other." I said watching them show off the ring to people.
As the sun began to go down, some people left but other's stayed to roast marshmallows. I had decided to sneak off and go lay in my bed for a few just to relax and spend some times alone. I snuck off just as McKinley was helping Kali make a s'more.
"Luke?" Jack asked as he walked passed my room and down to the bathroom. "What's going on?" He questioned.
"Nothing. Just thinking." I answered sitting up and looking at him.
"What are you thinking about?" He questioned coming into the room and sitting on the bed beside me.
"My future."
"What about it?" He questioned.
"I just, what if McKinley thinks that this is going to make us get married? I don't think I'm ready for that."
"I'm sure she's not either, Luke. Just because I got engaged doesn't mean that you're going to and I'm sure she knows that. You can't panic. I'm sure she doesn't want to get married right now." He answered.
"It just worries me that me and her are moving too fast." I commented.
"You've been dating for what? 7 months?" I nodded. "Not many people expect a proposal at 7 months. If she was pregnant, maybe." I nodded.
"She had a pregnancy scare." I commented still afraid of it happening again.
"What do you mean?" He asked.
"She thought she was pregnant. She went to the doctors without me to make sure." I answered. "It scared me. I can't be a dad."
"Well is she pregnant?" He asked.
"No but-"
"Then don't worry about it." He said standing up. "I'm going to go see my fiance, you get your shit together." I nodded as I looked at the floor. I had no idea what I was going to do.
*MCKINLEY P.O.V*
Once I saw Jack come out of the house, I went in. I was in search of Luke. I slowly walked up the stairs and moved towards his room.
"Luke?" I asked softly knocking on the open door. "Are you okay?" I asked watching as he chugged an entire beer.
"Yeah, I'm fine." He answered. I watched him set the bottle down on his dresser and stumble towards the bed. I had flash backs to watching my father try to get to the bathroom before the contents in his stomach came up through his mouth. I turned around and walked back downstairs and out the front door to sit on the porch. The sun had fully set and the light on the porch came on.
I sat there for what seemed like hours before Liz came out to say goodbye to Luke's cousins and noticed me.
"Mckinley? What are you doing out here?" She questioned as she sat beside me.
"Luke's drunk." I whispered. "And it reminded me of my father." I commented looking at the moon. "I don't want to see him like that." I said.
"I'll go talk to him. Come and lay on the couch." She said helping me stand and bringing me into the living room wrapping me in a blanket. She came back down about 3 minutes later to let me know that Luke was asleep. I had decided that I would stay on the couch that night. I didn't know what was going on with Luke. I wasn't sure why he got drunk. All I knew was that something was wrong and I prayed that it wasn't me.
