Chapter 50

That’s silt, not guilt, which, fine, I was still feeling, especially when the clerk eventually called and left a message. She said she needed me to come down to the courthouse. I assumed the reports had come in.

I told Bing I had an errand to run. I suggested that now would be a good time for him to visit his aunt. He’d already called her, but had yet to see her in person.

“Will you be able to be apart from me for that long?” he asked, only semi-jokingly.

“Yep, no problem,” I replied, only semi telling the truth.

I had an unhealthy attachment to Bing by then. We were Siamese twins without the tethered cartilage that tends to get in the way. Summer was half over, but at least my glass was half full again. Heck, it was brimming the hell on over. The Nile had flooded. The grass was green in my fertile crescent.

I didn’t let Dave know about the reports. He’d started this journey with me, but for now, it was mine alone.
