Chapter 12

"Am I going to get paid?"

"I promise." Fury said, smiling slightly. "We don't work for free, kid. If you do this, we'll make sure you're well compensated. And besides, we'll help you understand those powers, how to use them safely."

John sighed, considering the offer. He didn't want to be a guinea pig, but the idea of getting money in return and, at the same time, learning to control what was inside him didn't sound so bad, more so for someone who until recently struggled financially.

Finally, he nodded.

"That's fine. But only if you reward me generously. And by generously I mean a lot. I don't do it for free."

Fury smiled, satisfied.

"Deal."

As John lowered his head in thought, the room around him began to fade. Fury's voice, his own voice, the glow of the green glow coming from his hand, all began to dissolve into a haze. The images became distorted, blurred, until they disappeared completely.

John opened his eyes, sitting in the middle of his room in Tony's mansion, after all the eccentric inventor had allowed him to stay a few days while they finished the armor, however, at that moment being night and with Tony sleeping, John took the opportunity to continue exploring the limits of his powers. Once he awoke from the vision he realized that the SHIELD room and the conversation he had just experienced were nothing more than a vision. One possibility among many. One of the futures his power had shown him.

For a few days now he had been discovering the limits of his precognition ability and had been as it were squeezing it out, trying to see the various futures that could be in store for him.

John breathed a deep sigh of relief, still sitting quietly after the first vision. The feeling of that alternate reality was dissipating, but not entirely. He knew that his power could show him more, however, what he had seen....

'So the director of Shield seems to have an interest in me, huh.' He thought suspiciously. 'Although this is one of many futures that may await me, this doesn't seem like a far off one, in the vision Tony already appreciated knowing of Nick Futy's existence, interesting.'

Still the possibility of Tony knowing Nick Fury seemed minuscule to him after all Tony was a person who liked to brag so if he knew the leader of a major secret organization he probably would have told him, still it remained a possibility albeit a minuscule one.

'I should stop for today, I'm already very tired, but...' He thought as he looked down at his hands, which were currently emitting a faint greenish glow. 'I haven't reached my limit yet, maybe just a little more.'

So he closed his eyes again and let the streams of energy around him envelop him.

Another vision unfolded in front of him, like a veil being lifted.

This time, he was standing in the middle of a battle. The sky was covered by a dark storm, and all around him, shattered buildings marked the landscape. What struck him most was the presence of two strange figures he had never seen before. One of them wore red and gold armor, hurling bolts of lightning from his hammer at an army of alien creatures. The other, with a round metal shield, was leading the fighters on the ground with fierce determination.

John did not know their names, but the vision clearly showed him that these two were powerful. The green energy rising from his own hand was also participating in the battle, but there was something odd about it. The version of him in that vision seemed to have no control. Every move unleashed waves of destruction that affected everyone nearby, friend and foe alike. The screams of the other combatants shook him, and what terrified him most was the look in his own eyes: empty, devoid of humanity.

"This is a future where I lose control..."

The vision faded quickly, leaving John feeling uneasy. He couldn't allow himself to become that. He clenched his fists, but he knew he couldn't stop there. He needed to see more.

The next vision was different. There was no chaos, no destruction. Instead, he saw a future where he was sitting in a conference room. He didn't recognize anyone, but the people present looked important, some dressed in suits, others in military uniforms. John, also dressed in a suit, was surrounded by strange papers and devices. Although he did not know who these people were, they looked at him with respect, even admiration.

He had gained control of his abilities, and was using them to help maintain global peace. But, again, something wasn't right. As he looked more closely, he realized that while they respected him, they kept him in check, using him only when they needed him and limiting his freedom the rest of the time. It was as if he was a powerful piece in their game, but no more than a pawn.

"I don't want this either..." muttered John in his meditation, feeling the oppression of that future, as if he was being robbed of his autonomy.

The vision changed once again. This time, John was in a dark laboratory, surrounded by advanced machines and scientists working frantically around him. He felt tubes connected to his body, draining his energy, while several monitors displayed readings of his power. He tried to move, but he was paralyzed, trapped in an invisible cell.

"This future... they turn me into an experiment..."

His own voice echoed in his mind. 'They're not going to treat me like an experiment' but in this future, that was exactly what had happened. He had been betrayed, manipulated, reduced to a mere object of study. The scientists' faces were indifferent, as if he were nothing more than a source of power they could exploit at will.

John shook his head, and the vision dissipated, leaving him again in the calm of his meditation. His breathing was heavy, and sweat was beginning to bead on his brow. Which path should he take? Each of these futures presented a different challenge, but none gave him the answers he sought.

What did it all mean?

With a last-ditch effort, he focused again. This time, instead of waiting for the visions to come, he pushed them to the back of his mind. He would not let the possibilities overpower him. He would decide his future, not his power.

He opened his eyes. He had a long road ahead of him, but he now knew that his greatest challenge was not just to control his energy. It was to make sure that, in whatever future he chose, he would be the one to guide it, not others.

"It seems no matter what I do it always ended up under the control of others." Said in a lower tone he as he ducked his head. Control was something he had detested all his life, he hated it when other people wanted to have power over his future, so to him powers in a way and now that some time had passed he saw them as a blessing.

Not only did they make him a powerful being, but a free being, one who didn't have to follow anyone's orders unless he wanted to and that was what he loved the most. Freedom was the most important thing to John as it was a central part of who he was as an individual.

"No, I don't care what I have seen, whatever happens in the future, I will not be anyone's puppet. That is something I promise I will not allow." He said confidently and decisively, as his eyes lit up a bright emerald color as if forming a pact with himself.

Once the oath was made, he sat in meditation pose again and closed his eyes to explore the different futures he could visualize, little by little and without realizing it becoming a being that continuously alternated between the present and the future.
