Synopsis

-COMPLETE- It was a freak accident. Someone ran the light at an intersection and before I knew it... my world turned black. But I didn't die then. Instead, I was forced to lament and regret over all of my failures. Lament about how this so-called genius was lower than dirt even at the very end. And that should have been it. After my consciousness faded, I should have disappeared. But I woke up. A different world, another life. A fresh start. This time, for sure...!

Chapter 1Prologue

It was a tragedy.

"We can't do anything to save him."

Those quiet words declared my fate. The end.

...It wasn't fair.

I had just started my career. I had everything in the world to look forward to. After working so hard, suffering so much, failing to meet so many expectations... I had finally stepped foot on my path. The skills I sharpened after all those years failing were finally being put to use.

And it was over...? Just like that?

One moment. It was a single moment.

I was supposed to celebrate Christmas. It was the first year I could finally buy gifts for everyone. The first year that I could hold my head up high after a decade with nothing to show.

So... why? Why did it end up like this?

A single turn. A bright flash. The shrill screech of tires and the blare of car horns...

And then I was like this.

I couldn't see. I couldn't move. I couldn't talk.

All I could do was listen. As if I was already dead, the only thing left to me was helplessly hear the world around me, unable to interact.

It was cruel. If it was going to be that way, why not take my hearing as well? Why leave me like this?

What did I do to deserve this fate?

"...I understand."

A different voice from the first. My father's.

It was cold. Monotone. But not because he didn't care.

No. It was like that because he cared too much. Because he didn't want to show himself breaking down, he shut off his emotions and kept a level tone.

And that hurt.

It hurt because he had just started being lively again. After I started getting my life back together, he started adding some cheer back into his words when he talked to me. He started being proud again of his son.

But... But now...

A soft sigh echoed. After that, I felt a presence draw near. Not the doctor's but one that I knew well. My father.

The powerful presence that I relied on all this time. The one who I thought would always be there to protect me. The one who I used as an excuse to run around wasting my life on random skills, trying out all sorts of get rich schemes, testing all the shortcuts in the world... And the one whose expectations I kept betraying.

Until recently. Just recently, I could finally hold my head up high and meet his gaze. Could proudly face him and say that he didn't have to worry about me anymore.

But... now...!

"You worked hard, Son." A soft and tired voice. With it, I felt a rough but gentle hand brush my forehead. "I'm... I'm so proud of you."

Clipped words. Again, cold.

But I knew the truth behind them. How he was just holding himself back so that I wouldn't hear him cry.

And then he was gone. Footsteps drifted off to the distance, leaving my side.

A long sigh echoed in the room. The doctor's. And then after that... a long drone echoed. The sound of a flatlining heartbeat monitor.

I was dead.

It was the end.

My life was over. A life hailed as a genius, failing to live up to that name due to my laziness, being humbled by countless failures from trying to ride on talent, and only realizing at the end that diligence was key. That it didn't matter if I didn't look good, but that if I tried, there would be people to help support me.

But it was too late.

I wanted to make them proud. Mom. Dad... I wanted to live up to the expectations they had of me. I wanted to make up for wasting so many years and causing them so much pain.

I... I didn't want to die!

I didn't want my life to end like this!

I don't want my life to end in vain!

I...!

-LIV-

...I suddenly woke up.

My vision that had been stolen came back. Along with it came my sense of smell, taste, and touch. In exchange, it seemed like my hearing was blurred now. No, my vision was a bit blurry too and my body didn't really obey me.

I swept my gaze around to gather my bearings. And when I did, I realized that there was someone looking down at me. A beautiful young woman with clear blue eyes and blonde hair.

Was she a doctor? No, she looked too young to be one. Then... who was she?

As I was pondering that, another person came into view. A tall and handsome man with short brown hair, matched with a short ponytail. Unlike the woman, his eyes were a light green color. And as those eyes looked at me, the man smiled and they lit up.

The woman looked at the man and smiled as well.

Happiness, joy...

But I didn't get it. What were they so happy about?

And where was I? No, where was my dad? The hospital?

The man reached out to grab me, a wide grin on his face. As he did, I felt myself lifted through the air.

I wanted to squirm and break free. But before I did that, I noticed my surroundings and paused.

It wasn't a hospital.

First of all, the walls were wooden and the furniture looked a bit rustic. Mostly Victorian style.

Second of all, there was a beautiful woman standing in the back wearing a maid outfit. It would have been one thing if she was a nurse. I could have accepted the weird room as being a home hospice if she was. But that was clearly a maid outfit, complete with the white frills.

Third of all... and most importantly...

When I looked down at the man who picked me up, I noticed that my hands were in front of me. And I noticed that my hands were tiny. Small, compared to the man's face. In fact, only big enough to barely grab his nose.

And with that, I understood.

I was dead.

And now, I was alive again.

Reborn as a baby.

When that thought crossed my mind... When I had that realization, I did what any reasonable person would do.

I blacked out.

Pokemon Alternate Universe Adventures

A man from an Earth gets the choice to start over in any Universe and chooses an Alternate Pokemon Universe. Let us see if his journey to the top is succesful and the impact he will have on his new world. Pokemon is owned by Nintendo, Game Freak and Creatures Inc. I just use their sandbox for the plot of my MC and my OCs. This will be a "slow" paced story, in fact it's "super slow paced", so please don't expect the MC to directly start his journey in 20 chapters or so, actually multiply that by like 15. A lot is going to happen before that happens. The first 10-20 chapters or so are information heavy, depending on what kind of reader you are. I try to keep my chapter length between 2000 and 3000 words per chapter. My release rate is 4 chapter/week for now. I have a patre*n for those that want to support me with access to some advance chapters as a thank you. patre*n.com/Azrail93 This is an alternate pokemon universe so there will be differences to the games, manga and anime. So if something in the story is different it is most likely on purpose. The original sources are seen as suggestions not laws. Differences can be: Type variants, evolution conditions, strength mechanics, world building and more. If I am at some point asking for reader input I will do so but otherwise I will ignore most suggestions. So please don't spam things like catch this pokemon or do that next. I have my plot planned and external input will be considered when asked for. If I see a suggestion that I believe fit my plot flow I will use it and will credit the commentor. Comments on spelling and grammar mistakes are welcome. I will try to correct said mistakes with time. Constructive criticism will be read and considered. Insult and hate comments will be ignored or deleted depending on severity. Readers naturally can comment their dislike but one worders will be ignored. If the reason for the dislike is explained I will read it. Like previously mentioned pure insults and hate comments will be ignored or deleted. The same is true for simple hate reviews or insulting ones. Reviews complaining about something I warned about, such as the slow pace, will be deleted as well.

Author here. Thought I'd give my own review of the story up to the current chapter. Also since it seems that people here look more to reviews than the Author's note in a story. Before everything else though, this story is aimed towards people who've read at least the entire story of Mushoku Tensei. If you haven't, expect to be confused. I try to remember to explain things, but I'm running off a big base of knowledge that you probably won't have and that the wiki might not complete. Hopefully it's still an enjoyable read, but that's on you for going regardless. Anyway... it seems that my writing skills are so good people expected something completely original from the start instead of a fanfic roughly following the main story for a while. I'm flattered, really, but for a first stab at a fanfic for a series, that's just not happening. This is more exploratory than anything with a cohesive plot. While we jump off the rails of canon eventually (and boy do we jump off) that's not for a while in. The beginning of the story is more character exploration than anything plot heavy. And speaking of character explorations... This story isn't planned out. I'm not an author who likes mapping the entire story out... mostly because the many times I've tried that in the past, it's been a complete and utter failure. I have a few points in mind and a destination, but the story is pretty much unfolding organically from whatever pops in my head at the time. I'd like to think I'm a pretty good improviser by now, but there's definitely going to be parts that fall flat, so don't expect *too* much. I think that's part of the fun though, personally. As to the story itself... I'll say that looks are deceiving. I'm the sort of author who trusts in my readers to figure things out and/or enjoys the 'aha' moment when their guess about what's unfolding turns out to be true or when they get their expectations subverted. Of course, that's the ideal, but again, when you're playing by ear... Anyway. I try for daily updates, but I can't guarantee stability. Especially these days. I'm a third year law student heading into Patent and IP law, so there's inevitably going to be times when I sacrifice writing for IRL stuff. Not to mention the fact that my hourly rate is much more than anything I could get from writing or patreon when I start a job in my field... Yeah. That's just how it's going to be. Character design... I rate that low because I don't really 'design' the characters. I'm mostly just going off of my best feel, which could be off-base. There's no handy character sheet or whatever I'm working with, so I can't guarantee perfect in-characterness all the time, only my interpretation at the moment. As for world background, *cough*. Yeah. That's pretty abridged here, haha. Anyway, hope that clears up some questions. P.S. I'm a believer in freedom of speech, but I'm also a believer in consequences. I won't take it personally if you leave an honest review, but if it's clear that you're acting with malicious intent, I will act accordingly and yeet your review from existence. It's enough having to deal with clients and hearing the horror stories from public defenders. I don't want any more negativity here and will act with all the zeal that my role as a zealous advocate requires in my job to remove it. Anywho, that's it from me. Thank you for attending my ted talk.

This is my honest review. I started reading a long time ago, most of the time it was to distract and disconnect, so now I have read many novels of many different genres, And I can say without fear of being wrong that there are very few novels that I have come to connect or more specifically immerse myself in the characters, some because it was too fast, others because I did not understand what the prota was going through (or the protagonist literally was a being without emotions or a cardboard pesonaje) or because the characters were not very deep or only followed the prota (not bad but, I think what makes a story memorable is to see that all the characters are 'alive' and that they are just as important as the mc), but that's not the important thing, when I came across mushoku tensei, at first I didn't like it, partly because of the personality of the protagonist, but it wasn't because of him that I stayed in the story, I stayed in that story because of the secondary/main characters, some with good development others that were only touched enough to get to know them, but even if they were only superficially touched they caused me to feel that they are alive and living in their own world. In my opinion I think what impacted me the most was the development of the relationships between the characters, at first I didn't notice it, in fact I overlooked it, but at one point I came to like them and came to understand them subconsciously, and seeing how ludy grew up was what hooked me into the story, I still remember how much I cried during the death of you know who, and also when he left you-know-who, those two events together with the various difficulties both emotional and the fights and their characters were what told me 'they are alive' just that feeling is what caused me to think about finishing reading that story, and this fan-fic is doing great, it is transmitting to me what very few novels achieve, they make the characters alive, many may not notice it, this may be for everyone but for me, who have read different stories since I was between 12 and 14 years old (currently 17) it causes me an impact, and even today it has been a very long time since a novel provoked such a unique sensation, for those who came across this story, I recommend it, although I understand that many do not like some genres like haren give it a chance, in the end it is not about how many women the main character has, but how they all grow together in one way or another. In the case of mushoku tensei it develops it well unlike others, in general both this fan-fic and the original novel are very good reads that I would recommend to read. So much for my opinion, both of the fan-fic and the original novel. (google translator)
