Chapter 1: A man named Alex ( rewrite)

A small, flickering blue soul, apparently without purpose or any defined direction, fell randomly through the expansive and infinite expanse of space, boxed in by an overwhelming sea of pitch blackness. This curious circumstance had continued for what felt like hours, or even days; in this world, the notion of time had little meaning or reason. The small soul shimmered with a soft, gentle glow, illuminating only enough to see its own fragile outline as it further drifted through the total and absolute darkness surrounding it.

"I guess this is what it's like in the afterlife…" the soul mused, a thread of bemused resignation running through the sound of its voice. "It doesn't much look like the heaven or the hell that I had imagined."

Slowly, it began to filter through memories that filled in the blank with momentary flashes of a life once lived. The soul remembered a name: Alex, a twenty-one-year-old majoring in programming, who had led a quiet, uneventful life young nights spent poring over lines of code, weekends spent watching anime or binge-watching his favorite superhero movies, followed by a constant feeling of wanting more.

He remembered his life in broken fragments and disconnected moments, much like pieces of shattered glass. As an only child growing up in the quiet suburb, Alex had developed a certain degree of introversion where he found comfort and solace in the imaginative world of fantasies rather than dealing with the harsh battles reality had to offer. Marvel, DC, anime, and his favorite of course of being the Transformers universe were his main entry points to that far-off and magical place, a realm that was often inhabited by colorful daydreams of what life would be like to live in those vivid and kaleidoscopic worlds. Therein, he could see himself grasping a destiny far more exciting and spectacular than the one that life had regretfully given him.

A smile, though it was not visible to the eye, seemed to glide through the little blue soul effortlessly, bringing warmth and light as it took a moment to reflect on memories and experiences of the past. As Alex remembered the days of his childhood, filled with excitement and wonder as a dedicated fan of the legendary Transformers series, one character always came to mind at the forefront, Sam Witwicky. He greatly admired the character for his exceptional bravery and courage, evidenced by countless situations in the series. However, in relation to his admiration, he found himself often thinking and wondering how he would have been able to handle the challenges and dilemmas faced by the character if he had been in Sam's place facing the same trials and adventures.

"If only I had the chance," he told himself, filled by a sense of desiring and regretting, "to unite with the Autobots, to really make a difference in the world…" A wave of nostalgia hit Alex's soul, which now hung in the air, forcing him to engage in a deep reflection on the last moments of his life. It all happened with an unbelievable and unexpected suddenness—a piercing, burning pain shot down his chest with a mad violence as he was mounting the stairs to his room, just as an oppressive darkness overflowed him, swallowing him completely.

He came to the deep realization that a heart attack had taken his life cruelly much earlier than he could ever think possible.

He had been so young, balancing on the brink of finding himself and working out exactly who he was going to be in life, and at the time, all had seemed so dreadfully unfair, yet in that deep void, there had been nobody there for him to turn against or dispute, and no fate there for him to bargain with in any way at all. There had been nothing around him but an eternal silence that wrapped itself around him.

Then, suddenly, through the deep silence that covered the atmosphere like an invisible wall, came a voice, smooth and mechanized in its nature. It did not break the air with sharpness or loudness; rather, it was cultured and almost soothing, as if it were habituated to delivering directions and reassurances to those lost souls who genuinely sought their path amidst the confusions of life.

"You have been granted three wishes," it announced with an impressive resonance, its voice booming through the deep silence that surrounded them, filling Alex's soul with a profound mix of shock, wonder, and curiosity that he had never experienced before.

"What?" Alex's mind was racing. "Three wishes… like in those reincarnation stories?"

It was all too good to be true, but then again, so was the possibility of floating mindlessly in a black hole after death. Realizing that he could very well end up in one of those totally ridiculous situations he had read about in different books, Alex decided that he would have to get down to some serious, deep thinking. If he really did have three wishes, maybe just maybe he could finally manage to achieve that life he had always wanted and desired.

He took a deep breath, as if not only air but the promise of hope and possibility entered him, concentrating on the first of wishes that had come into his mind. If he was given a chance at reclamation for a second chance at life, he definitely did not want to return as just a face in the crowd among the ordinary. He wanted life overflowing with excitement and adventure, the thrill of feeling life amidst a world that he knew and loved so dearly.

"My very first wish," he began to formulate, "is to be reborn as the character Sam Witwicky from the vast Bayverse Transformers universe… but to retain all the memories from my former life in their entirety."

From out of the ambient silence, there was a low hum that softy resonated through the air, almost as if the voice was thoughtfully considering his request before answering.

"One wish, granted."

A bright smile bloomed in Alex, lighting up his face with hope and excitement. That one wish filled him with joy and also somewhat prepared him for the fascinating new opportunity he was about to go through. Yet he knew too well that he needed much more than that one wish to make his way safely across a world full of risks and uncertainties.

"For my second wish, I want to have the brilliant mind and the tremendous bank of memories that belong to Tony Stark but I want to have them without any of his emotional experiences. Most reincarnates forget to not wish for the emotions that comes along with the memories of certain characters and forget the emotions play a big part in what someone becomes. My goal is to gain not only his genius-level IQ but also all the fantastic skills that he has accumulated in his years, on top of the vast library of knowledge that he acquired during his fantastic life."

If he suddenly found himself in the middle of a vast, intricate world filled with sentient robots, then the sheer genius and limitless imagination markers of a mind as great as that of Tony Stark would be well and truly considered priceless.

"Wish two, granted," the voice came back silky smooth, its tone dripping with an almost mesmerizing quality.

A shiver of excitement ran down Alex's spine, a burning fire that had never been lit before now flamed in his very soul. These wishes were coming his way with such ease, without even the slightest touch of doubt clouding his mind or heart. He had one last wish swirling about in his head, and deep down, profound clarity enveloped him—Essence of the Blank. He had come across this fantastic idea in many fanfictions, and he knew full well that it was an enormously powerful concept that would be able to give him the capability to thread his way through just about any situation that might come his way.

Only such a being would have the profound and transformative Essence of the Blank, which would thereby mean that he would break through the inborn restrictions of being human, ending up in a state whereby he was capable of becoming the absolute and unparalleled master over any skill or ability that he chose to pursue.

"My third wish," he began to articulate, "is to acquire the elusive Essence of the Blank."

At this point, the voice paused for a moment, as if reflecting on its reply, before finally giving its answer.

After a moment of reflection, it spoke itself quite clearly: "That wish is outside the scope of the power which I am capable of granting you. I would therefore like to request that you choose another wish."

"Dang it," Alex muttered under his breath in frustration, though he couldn't rightly say that he was all that shocked by the matter.

The nature of the Blank was such a degree of power that was seldom, if ever, bestowed within the lore and legends of reincarnation. In a moment of quick and agile thinking, Alex thought through, with great care, what other possible benefit he could gain, all without crossing the line into the territory of godlike power.

"Well, for my last wish," he said with certitude, "I wish to have the best human body possible one that is utterly immune to any infection, blessed with the potential to be exceptional at any physical activity, and able to adapt at a very accelerated rate to any training regimen it may endure. I would like to be an expert in whatever skill or sport I take up, not through superhuman gifts or innate talents, but rather through the very definition of being human, as much as it is possible."

Without a moment's pause, the voice answered with clarity, "Wish three has been granted. Your reincarnation will now begin."

"Wait," Alex interrupted, his mind suddenly highly conscious of the flutter of nerves sparking inside him in reaction to the transformation about to occur. "Thanks, I guess that's all I can say."

"Good luck, Sam," the voice replied, its mechanical timbre stitched with a fine thread of amusement that made it almost cheerful. For just that passing instant, right before things took a sharp turn, Alex could have sworn that he heard the soft, delicate laugh from the voice, leaving him in no doubt as to the extent of its knowledge concerning his destiny. And then, in the blink of an eye, faster than lightning, his own soul was jerked forward, sent tumbling through the blackness at a fantastically rapid pace that left him breathless. A swirling mix of excitement and fear swept over him in a most turbulent tide as the enveloping darkness slowly began to recede and give way to an utterly breathtaking, dazzling light.
