Any Reversal?
Thousands of moviegoers inside the Galaxy Theater in Los Santos clenched their fists and curled their toes in anticipation. Their hearts hung in suspense as they stared nervously at the screen.
"Spider-Man 2" seemed to have reached its conclusion, but then came an unexpected twist! The Little Green Goblin, consumed by hatred, planned to destroy the entire city with nuclear fusion and captured Gwen Stacy, intending to kill the person Spider-Man loved most.
"Hahahaha—little bug, who will you choose?" Goblin sneered.
If Peter chose Gwen, the city would be obliterated, and Gwen's survival would still be uncertain. If he chose to save the city, would he watch Gwen fall to her death?
At the critical moment, Dr. Otto Octavius came to his senses. Seeing the nuclear fusion device spiraling out of control, even cutting the power wouldn't stop it. Otto chose to sacrifice himself.
"Go save her, I'll handle this," Otto said. Peter, with tears in his eyes, took one last look at Otto before resolutely swinging into the sky.
Otto used his mechanical arms to dismantle the fusion device, dragging it to the depths of the Hudson River.
Boom!
There was an explosion. In the blaze of light, Peter soared to the top of the Osborn Building. The Little Green Goblin hovered above, holding Gwen in one hand.
"Ah, little bug, you forced me to this!" he taunted.
"Harry, this isn't you!" Peter shouted.
"No, this is the real me! You took the most important person from me! Now it's your turn to feel that pain!"
"Nooo!" Peter screamed as the Green Goblin let go of Gwen. Spider-Man leapt to save her, but the Goblin interfered, leading to a mid-air battle. Gwen continued to plummet, faster now. In the midst of the fight, Peter managed to bind the Goblin to the wall with his web, then dived after Gwen.
But the fight had already taken too long—Gwen was almost at the ground. In a desperate last move, Peter shot a web toward her, straining to reach her through the falling debris.
The audience held their breath, the tension reaching its peak.
The webbing connected with Gwen just as she hit the ground. But it was too late. Peter gently picked her up, but her eyes were closed forever. She lay lifeless in his arms.
"No!" Peter's heart-wrenching scream echoed in the theater.
Despite many comic fans knowing this moment was coming, they were still deeply shocked. The theater was filled with gasps and sobs.
Peter couldn't accept what he saw. His face twisted with grief, regret, and anger—emotions that perfectly mirrored the audience's sorrow. Xu Can's performance as Spider-Man was flawless, perfectly capturing the heartbreak of a hero who had lost the one he loved most.
...
As the audience silently wept, the camera transitioned to Gwen's funeral. Peter, now hollow, stood before her tombstone, lost to the world. Time passed, yet even the Daily Bugle's cries for Spider-Man's return couldn't reach him.
In the darkness, a sinister figure was assembling the Sinister Six—Rhino, Vulture, Green Goblin, Electro, Sandman, and Doctor Octopus. Their menacing silhouettes flashed across the screen.
Aunt May, desperate to bring Peter back, handed him a flash drive containing Gwen's graduation speech. Her voice echoed through the speakers:
"No matter how lost you feel, promise me you'll never give up hope."
As Peter listened to Gwen's words and remembered their time together, something changed within him.
"Live with hope. Let your past experiences make you stronger."
"This is not goodbye. We will carry each other's light into the next stage of life."
Her speech inspired Peter to don the Spider-Man suit once more, as Gwen would have wanted.
Just in time, too. Rhino was terrorizing the streets of New York. A little boy, wearing a Spider-Man mask, stood defiantly in front of Rhino.
The audience gasped. Then, a familiar voice echoed behind the boy.
"Hey, Spidey…"
Peter had returned. "Brave kid, go find your mom. I'll handle this piece of iron."
Without waiting, Rhino charged, and Spider-Man leaped high into the air. The two were about to collide—
The movie ended abruptly.
The screen flashed the Spider-Man logo, and the theater erupted into a frenzy of excitement. The applause was deafening. Though Gwen's death had upset many, the ending left everyone with rekindled hope.
When the lights came up, the audience stayed in their seats, completely transfixed. Nobody wanted to leave. Then, just as everyone thought the movie was truly over, a flicker of light appeared on the IMAX screen. The screen seemed to tear open, and a figure in a white spider-suit stepped forward.
"Wait… What?!"
"Is that… Gwen?" someone gasped.
The figure was unmistakable—Spider-Gwen from Universe 65. As she stood on a New York rooftop, gazing at Times Square, she saw an electronic billboard featuring the classic Spider-Man image.
"Funny, this definitely isn't my New York," she said, before the screen faded to black.
The Easter egg ended, and the theater lights came up for good. The audience burst into applause, their emotions riding a rollercoaster throughout the film.
During the Q&A session, the audience eagerly raised their hands, their questions firing like rapid shots. One person asked, "Is that last Easter egg hinting at Spider-Man facing the Sinister Six in another universe?"
Xu Can, the screenwriter and star, smiled and nodded. "Yes, she's from another universe. But what happens next? You'll have to wait for the final part of the trilogy."
Another audience member voiced their dismay. "Why did Gwen have to die? A happy ending would've been so much better!"
The crowd buzzed with agreement. Some, however, believed Gwen's death gave the story more emotional weight. Xu Can, who had once wrestled with the decision himself, ultimately chose to honor the comic's legacy.
"The happy ending might feel good for a moment," he said, "but Gwen's death will resonate for years. I believe when you look back, it will feel different."
Taylor Swift, sitting quietly in the theater, found herself deeply affected by Gwen's death. The love between Peter and Gwen felt so real that Taylor could almost imagine losing someone she loved. The thought made her chest tighten with emotion.
Suddenly, lyrics started forming in her mind:
"You held my lifeless body, And there was nothing I could do, You broke my heart in Brooklyn, skin and marrow…"
The creative spark ignited, and Swift rushed out of the theater, eager to capture this sudden burst of inspiration.
On its first day of release, Spider-Man 2 shattered box office records with $74 million, surpassing even The Dark Knight's opening. With a 9.3/10 rating from fans and critics alike, it was clear Xu Can had done it again. North America was in an uproar.
