Marriage. The word echoed in my mind, a relentless drumbeat that overshadowed the forced merriment of the party.
Weeks ago, the discovery of a new clause in my father's will had sent a cold dread spiraling through me. I could remember the shock on my face when he had called me into his office and informed me of the new development that evening; the dinner that had been to welcome Ava back from Europe. Remain CEO by my thirtieth birthday, or lose it all.
Except, the fine print stipulated one crucial detail: I had to be married.
The absurdity of it burned. Nicola, after all, was already happily married with children so it could not be because he wanted grandchildren. So why the sudden obsession with matrimony?
