  A gentle tap on my lap startled me awake. Blinking slowly, I realised I was no longer in the Westcott mansion's parking space, but in my own building's dimly lit parking lot.

  Worse, my head had been resting, uncharacteristically, on Alexander's shoulder. Mortification flooded my cheeks.

  "Oh my god, Alexander! I'm so sorry," I stammered, scrambling back to my side of the seat.

  He stared at me for a moment, before he nodded. "It's fine. I needed a reason to leave the party too. I'm sorry that you were invited to that because it was not a birthday party for you."

  While that was true, it had not bothered me because it was not really my birthday and my mind drifted back to his conversation with Nicola I'd eavesdropped on earlier.
