Merlin II

The kid zones out a lot. mid-conversations, like her mind was busy thinking about something else. Another odd thing was how she never seems surprised with all facts Arthur dishes out, which makes me wonder what she truly knows.

I am not Arthur, mind games and plots are not really my forte. He can figure this out on his own, I am not needed in this, I am just his bodyguard and that is just what I shall act as today.

Now tomorrow was a different case, maybe I could sneak into the company's main office and download the files we so terribly need. If only Arthur would let me take the risks.

Arthur and the kid go through the files more, the destruction in each of the pictures takes me back to the place I called home. I was born in the middle of the war, never got to see the place I call motherland in its full glory. War was all I knew, it was what all the children who survived know.

It had been so long to the point you remember nothing but the feel of dirt and grime in your fingernails and the smell of gunpowder and blood in the air. And the quiet melody sung in the dead of night.

Arthur didn't experience that, he would never understand the brutality. He would never understand the need to shoot first. That you must trust no one if you want to survive.

We all have our roles, Arthur will lead this country to a better future and I will ensure he gets there no matter what.

And if it means this kid is the way to it, so be it.

They continue to have a back-and-forth, the kid not really impressed with Arthur.

She closes the files," you are telling me that this is your sister?"

"You both look nothing alike, do you have any more proof other than the coincidence of her first name being the same as your sister?", her eyes bore into Arthur's. Eyes that belongs to someone fiercely protective, and how she matched Arthur's at that moment.

"I uh- I do" Arthur stammers reaching into his pant pocket, pulling out his worn-out wallet. He takes an old photo from within it. the edges are a bit torn but the kids in the picture were as bright as they could be. Arthur's blond hair is a lot brighter, and his light blue eyes crinkle with the small smile on his face, unlike the black-haired girl who is beaming at the camera. they are both have baby fat on their faces and seem so much younger than they are now.

"This is the only picture I have of us together," he says as he passes the photo hesitantly to her.

The kid's face crumbles into something I hadn't seen on her face yet. A small smile that was sombre, a delicate thing. Within a minute it was gone, the only evidence of it ever happening was the tiniest of wetness in her eyes.

"What do you want me to do?" she asks, with a new determination in her eyes.

"I want to reopen this case, and I want you to help me investigate it," he says finally.

that causes her to tilt her head confused, "I am a lawyer? shouldn't you go to the police or a detective for that?"

"Yes, but I want to take them down in court, I want the world to know the crimes they have done," he says, his voice as hard as steel.

"Take down who?" she asks and with the glint in her eyes, I could tell she already knew who it was.

Arthur takes a deep breath and looks her right in her eyes as he says, "The woods cooperation, my parents."
