What drives a person to grow? Is it love? Is it care? Both are correct, but they're not the best answer. Although they may be true to some lucky people blessed with a great family and social life, that is not for everyone.

Desperation.

A person would strive to work once they're desperate. In cases where a person is too desperate, they would stop at nothing to achieve their goal. But what does desperation have anything to do with May?

Everything. May was a melf who could not use magic, and in turn, she was blessed with a great aptitude for controlling the elements through nature. Just like how blind people develop their hearing, she was desperate and made up for her lack with her skills in controlling nature.
