And that's how they ended up here. Gibbons, the agent in charge went through all the methods in the book, one by one. It went from intimidating them by showing his power to sending in a spy.
Serena, the newly hired bartender was quite suspicious from the beginning. Beautiful yet fierce, she was exactly what Bruce liked, so he hired her without much thought. In the beginning, she herself liked her too. There were a lot of similarities between them, so she didn't have any problems with her.
But things started getting a bit too suspicious when she attempted to tempt Bruce and seduce him. It was easy to see things from a woman's perspective with what she was trying to do.
Her relationship with Bruce was quite complicated, to say the least, they were obviously far from being just friends but with how busy both of them were, followed by her decision to follow him, they had taken things a bit slow.
Something which both of them non-verbally agreed upon. For her, she didn't want to burden Bruce further by getting in a relationship just yet. He already looked hesitant enough to bring her into this life and if they were to start dating, Bruce surely wouldn't be able to focus on the important things properly.
He was moving away from a life he had known his whole life, and that alone was stressful enough. So until she could confidently deal with her problems and was useful enough to be relied upon, she didn't want to weigh him down with this.
So with how things were, she couldn't complain even if Serena wanted to flirt with her new boss. After all, technically she was in a similar position as her. Albeit a bit jealous, she didn't interfere as it was Bruce's decision to make.
But things played out as she expected, as other than a few interactions Bruce was way too busy to sit and chat her up.
That's when things took a turn when Serena's target shifted from Bruce to her. Sure, she didn't have any problems being friends but with how things seemed and how she was subconsciously defensive against her, she began finding loopholes in her story.
Their conversation began feeling like an interrogation sometimes, so Suki who was new on training decided to follow her guts and went with it. Surveillance was the way to go, with how many hidden cameras they had put in place for similar situations, all she had to do was check up on her from time to time and follow through with any suspicious activity.
And low and behold, it didn't even take her a week to find a bug Serena had planted. With proof of her doubt, she immediately went to Bruce but unlike how she expected, Bruce was well too relaxed about the situation.
His analysis was simple, Serena was only sent here to collect intel and nothing more, after all, assassins don't wait around and reveal their identity just so they could kill. And he could guess that Serena was newly appointed as well because she lacked the most important part of infiltrating which was patience.
So his plan was to just bore her and Gibbons out. They didn't have anything on him other than a few rumors which Bruce took care of, so as long as they don't blatantly hand out the evidence they wanted to them, they would just be fine.
With how their business had just started, there were surely no customers nor any request for them to follow through. Bruce was doing his job on the down low and from an outsider's perspective, they were simply just trying to run a club and nothing more.
Though she didn't quite like the idea of having a spy among them, she didn't say much as she continued with her usual chores without letting anything slip out. This wasn't difficult considering, she really didn't know much and was more focused on her training which she was steadily improving upon.
Currently looking at Serena taking out all the bugs she had planted one after another, she didn't know how to feel about it at all. It was easy to see, that Bruce's long but simple plan had worked with how they both parties were taking this situation casually but watching her take out a handful of bugs she had missed, made her feel incompetent as she failed to see things even when odds were by her side.
"So is it done?" She asked watching Serena leave,
"Yeah, and it looks like we've got ourselves our very first job." Bruce said with a smile as he glanced over at her, "Though with how our agent Scarface is being, I am not too sure about this job."
"I know, I know... I won't ask you to bring me along." Suki huffed pouting her lips as Bruce let out a chuckle.
Bruce had certainly changed quite a bit in these last few months, he was smiling more often and was more expressive than ever before. That stoic face, which was hard to get used to only came out while he was being serious.
It was a funny thing to imagine, considering that he acted more casual the more serious he became.
"It's not that." Bruce said, "You're right about the 'not bringing you along' part but I am really not sure. What do you think Gibbons wants me to do that something he can't achieve with his chosen X's and the military behind him?"
"It does sound shady..." Suki said disregarding the part where he casually bought out the fact that he wasn't bringing her along on purpose, "It must be something really secretive or the usual 'the government sending you on a suicide mission', which in one way or another will bring trouble."
"But we currently have an upper hand in this deal, so there isn't much to worry about." Bruce nodded, "And since we are in a tight spot with funds and managing the company, I would like to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one."
"Who knew running a club wasn't so profitable, huh." Suki who had been managing the club shook her head as she knew about this problem more so than Bruce. Compared to how much she earned in a race, the nightclub wasn't profitable in the slightest.
For a decent living sure, but what remained after taxes and paying your employees this lifestyle didn't quite suit the both of them, who both didn't have any concept of saving or using money effectively.
Bruce had without hesitation bought the club but his wallet wasn't going to keep raining cash forever and living in L.A. especially in Hollywood didn't come cheap.
