Perfection is Hard to Achieve

__________ POV Beru __________

In retrospect, both Yori and I should've expected this to happen... Well, I think Yori actually did.

But it did take me by surprise.

It seems that, while Rewind is more than capable of rewinding genetics, it can't fix the minds of the Nomus. That's how you get the scene in front of me to happen.

Five seemingly normal people, all of them have dead eyes, they are just emptily staring at the white walls of the laboratory.

Their bodies have recovered, but their minds are completely lost... How do you fix something like this?

At first, I wanted to try and rewind their minds, maybe I'd be able to get them to the same state they were in before All for One changed them.

But Yori stopped my foolish and somewhat desperate attempt with a small reminder.

"Do you even know when that is? Besides, the effects of Rewind are very much temporary... You'd have to rewind their minds daily, you simply don't have enough energy for that."

Yori had always been a straightforward type of guy. He had his moments of shrewdness, his moments of suspicion and intrigue. But, he was always a blunt person.

His tone sounded like he was just listing off facts. Beru would've been mad at the doctor if he didn't know any better. But he already knew that Yori wanted to fix the Nomus just as much as he did.

"It seems we'll have to wait for a better-suited quirk if we want to actually help the Nomus...~" Beru said while closing his eyes a bit.

The humans that the Nomus had turned into were all just staring into the void. Not even the slightest sign of intelligence in them.

Beru did not doubt that, if their bodies didn't instinctually breathe in oxygen, they wouldn't even be able to survive on their own.

"..." Yori didn't speak at all this time. He simply sat down and looked at samples of DNA from the five men in front of him. The five former Nomus were all going to turn back into Nomus if they weren't regularly given some 'Rewind Serum' as he and Beru had called it.

"At least Rewind is still going to be helpful for the rest of mankind..." Beru said while tapping a finger on the table in front of him.

"It is just as useful for the Nomus... They just need a way to regain their sentience..." Yori said as he sighed in frustration.

"We'll find it in time~, For now, ~ We should be happy with the progress we've gotten so far~" Beru was a bit more positive than Yori.

But he wasn't foolish enough to not understand how unlikely it was that they were going to run into such a quirk.

The two of them decided to stop thinking about what might happen in the future. They decided to, instead, focus on what they managed to do in the little amount of time they worked together.

Yori realised just how instrumental Beru was to his success. Without him, it was unlikely that Yori would've been able to get his hands on the Rewind sample.

It also would've been unlikely for him to even mass produce it since he wasn't quite willing to let a child suffer for his research.

Now, thanks to Beru, he had a cure, a way to produce it infinitely, and all at the simple price of having Beru torture him under the guise of training...

Well, in truth, Yori didn't dislike the training, he just found it torturous that Beru decided that the opportune time to do it was on one of his rare vacation weeks.

Beru had subsequently become his greatest friend and his most trusted ally in business. He didn't mind helping Beru with his stuff. Things like denouncing important figures mattered little to Yori...

But still, he wouldn't have cared to do it if Beru didn't specifically ask him to. Even if he knew he wasn't going to face backlash, he also knew that drawing a target on one's back is never a good idea.

He did not doubt that, once all of the drama was blown over, those people were going to retaliate. Either by sending some people to kill him or by trying to undermine his influence.

He was a scientist, but he was also a political figure. He knew the dance and the tools that were needed to succeed in such a landscape. Therefore, it was normal that he'd know the way people in power dealt with their enemies.

"Say, Beru. If someone were to try and attack this lab in the future... I don't want you to interfere." Yori stopped looking at the files in front of him and spoke in a clear voice.

Beru raised a non-existent eyebrow at that request. He tilted his head in confusion.

"It's pretty clear to me that I will be targeted in the future... I don't really mind, but you tend to bring even more trouble usually. And, if you happened to randomly save the same place twice, people might start thinking you're a frequent visitor. And that would bring even more attention on the two of us."

Yori's logic was sound. The two of them needed to keep their experiments unknown for now. There was no benefit in allowing the world to learn of its impending doom.

Even if they were to lie about looking into something else. The two of them collaborating would raise many eyebrows, especially since Yori was once considered Beru's enemy by most people that knew Beru's situation.

"Welp~ I guess you're right~ We might be able to lie our way out of it~ But there's no reason to complicate things to that extent~ Right now, only Nezu knows about me visiting you a few times, as well as the actual reason~ And I think it's better that it remains like that~," Beru said while stroking his antennas.

"The Principal of UA, right? If you find him trustworthy, that's fine. But try to keep our operations as much of a secret as possible." Yori said while extending his hand and reaching for a coffee mug. It was already cold, but Yori took a sip from it nonetheless.

"He's one of the few people I can trust~ He's also not stupid enough to go about screaming that the world is ending~" Yori chuckled a bit when hearing that.

"I doubt anyone with a quirk like High Spec can be unintelligent," Yori said with a small smile.

"Yep~ Well, today was a productive day~ It might be better to end it now though~ Not much to do when you're working endlessly...~" Beru then put a hand underneath his chin.

"Say, have you ever been to the USA?~" Beru asked while staring intently at the scientist.

Yori immediately got wary...' Don't tell me...'

"Y-yeah... I've been there on business trips a few times... Why?" He asked while sweating a bit.

"Well~ We're going there!~ Now!~" Beru said as he opened up a portal underneath the two of them.

Yori, just sighed as he looked at the portal swallowing him. 'Fucking knew it...'
