Evans Kurt sat in his office with a stethoscope around his neck after making his usual rounds checking up on all his patients.
Again, his mind traveled back to the girl he rescued on his way to the hospital that night. He still couldn't get her out of his thoughts. He was still curious about the reason behind her escape away from the hospital.
Bringing her to the hospital should have earned him some trust from her, and that should have been reason enough to make her believe that he wasn't a bad guy like the ones who did what they did to her, but she repaid his kindness by running away.
Moreover, he couldn't even get her name.
Evans hoped the girl wouldn't try one of her suicide attempts after her escape away from him, and that, wherever she was right now, he hoped she was alive and well.
The continuous ringing of his phone brought Evans's mind back to the present. The urgency at which the caller was calling him, was no doubt the impatient person he was expecting all along. He couldn't believe he missed out on his brother's party due to his emergency patients.
On second thoughts, It was his birthday too, and he completely forgot about it.
It was two hours past midnight! What could Eric want from him right now? To gloat about his absence at his Birthday party or what?
As Evans's thoughts run wild about his impatient brother, his phone's screen was occupied with only one name for a few minutes now, nonstop!
Brother calling...
Evans nearly declined the call to avoid his brother's nagging, but on second thought, he picked it up to simply listen to whatever Eric was about to gloat about, then ignore him and hung up on him.
"Hey, birthday boy...still enjoying yourself at your party?" Evans teased the moment he picked up the call.
"Come home... now! It's urgent. It's an emergency, we've got a patient here." Was Eric's worried reply.
Eric hung up the call after making sure his brother understood what he meant, which left Evans tensed from Eric's worried voice. He quickly took off his doctor's coat and was ready to leave for home.
Evans took out a personal briefcase which he normally kept in his office for individual checkups outside the hospital and rushed out to his car.
Within half an hour, Evans parked his car at his brother's mansion and entered the house looking restless.
He met Jeff as soon as he entered. "Where is the patient?
"In his room!" was Jeff's short reply.
Evans forgot the elevator and climbed the stairs two steps at a time to quickly reach Eric's room.
Once inside, Evans saw his brother standing by the window looking extremely worried, whilst Sofia was seated by the side of the bed where a girl was lying down unconscious.
Blood dripped from her forehead and lips. Bruises were evident on her legs and arms.
"Could you both leave us for some time?" Evans ordered the couple and placed his suitcase by the bedside table to begin examining the patient.
Eric and Sofia excused themselves to go outside and left Evans to do his job.
"I will let Jeff drop you home...It's already late. Don't worry, I will keep you updated on any progress." Eric convinced Sophia to go home and rest.
He knew she was tired after all the stress at the party. But Sofia tried to convince Eric to stay with him, but Eric wasn't sure about that idea.
They already had enough on their plate with an unconscious girl. Another rumor of them together in his home, this late at night might be another problem, so Eric stressed his opinion on Sophia going home. They have no idea who might be tailing behind them.
Especially if Sophia spends the night at his place, which could be another cause for alarm.
Eric reassured her about her worries and promised to make sure none of the incidents tonight get attached to her name in any way. He was entirely to be blamed. He should have been the one behind the wheel.
Eric escorted a reluctant Sophia to the car as he held tightly to her hand. He didn't let go until he saw her seated in the car looking disappointed before Jeff came to drive her home.
"Drive carefully, Jeff.... and see you tomorrow Sofia...Goodnight!" Eric waved at the moving car before he made his way back to his room.
Jeff on the other hand was still depressed about the night's accident. He felt sorry and disappointed in himself for causing it. Jeff blamed himself for the trouble he caused Eric tonight, after doing everything so far to keep Eric from falling into any sort of trouble that might ruin his career. As a manager, he has failed in his job.
He wouldn't have believed he would be the one who will finally taint Eric's image, which increased his distress.
His sour mood was noticed by Sofia who thought of ways to console him.
"It wasn't your fault, Jeff... she was the one who appeared out of nowhere and run in front of a moving car. It's not like you saw her and hit her deliberately." Sofia did her best to comfort him.
Jeff turned to Sofia with a sad smile
"I just couldn't believe I was more worried about Eric's image being tarnished than the girl's life." It was a shock to Jeff.
"Well, that's because you have known Eric your entire life, but that girl was just someone you met tonight. It's a normal feeling. it's not like you were hoping for the girl to die...God forbid!
Sophia was right! None of them wanted all these to happen. They couldn't stand a girl's death on their conscience.
Evans would take care of everything and save the girl's life, then after her recovery, Eric would give her a huge sum of money for any damages and they would close this chapter in our life for good.
As Jeff's mind dwelled on Sofia's logical comfort reasoning, It made everything sound so easy.
Instead, Jeff reprimanded Sofia for her ability to use logic instead of emotions in an innocent girl's life. But it surely helped ease his worries.
It would be better if they stressed less and work more towards a profitable end.
There was no need to pressure themselves on something inevitable. They need to develop the faith that everything would be alright in the end.
Jeff couldn't believe he later ended up being convinced by Sofia's logic. It's like she worked magic with her tongue. He felt more relaxed now than before.
"Thanks, Sofia...that actually helped." Jeff turned in wonder to stare a Sofia.
"I never knew you were so talented in many things...first, you sing so beautifully and you even have the ability to ease a tensed mind. You would make a very good shrink, and very good with consultations. Your logic worked magic on me." Jeff added, then chuckled at his sense of humor.
"I don't think so...the one mind I desperately wanted to control was Eric's. But his attention is far beyond my reach. Controlling minds isn't a talent I would want if it can't get me what I want." Sofia's mood was suddenly soiled at the thought of her lack of progress so far to get Eric to notice her.
"I told you I will help you, didn't I? Don't worry! you can count on me." Jeff comforted her and her sad face was replaced with a broad smile.
Sofia thanked him for everything. For his kind words and for driving her home.
"Not yet...I should be the one to thank you for liking a clueless dummy like Eric...You are the kind of woman he needs in his life right now....supportive and understanding. Your beauty is a plus and you sing amazingly well too. You are a whole package of everything Eric needs."Jeff teased, flattering Sofia which made her giggle at his words.
However, everything Jeff said was true even though he said all that to cheer Sophia up. Her giggles and happiness brought contentment to his heart.
When they got to Sophia's apartment, Jeff parked the car in front and she got down.
"Thanks a lot, Jeff...Goodnight!" She uttered as she opened the car door to get down from the car, then waved at Jeff before she made her way into her apartment building.
Back at Eric's Mansion;
Eric was pacing back and forth in front of his room since he sent Sofia home with Jeff. He was anxiously waiting for Evans to finish with his examination and tell him how serious the girl's condition was.
He was already worried about Kristine's presence in his house right now.
A complicated setback in his well-laid plans.
How was this possible? Was this what people called a coincidence? What exactly was their Nanny's adopted daughter doing in Riley state and at such an ungodly hour of the night?
What could be the reason which brought her this thousand miles away from home? He had to find out from her no matter the consequences.
The sound from the door click brought Eric's attention out of the desperate misery of his thoughts.
Evans came out of Eric's room with a dejected look on his face. It didn't look good at all.
Upon seeing the gloomy expression on his brother's face, Eric became extremely nervous...
"Was it that serious?!" He didn't realize he said it aloud.
"Yeah! It is. Very serious it seems..what the hell happened? She hit her head hard. But luckily, It wasn't deep enough for surgery, just a few stitches." Evans paused to catch his breath.
"There might be some complications though, but she needs to regain consciousness before we can find out how serious her condition got. For now, she needs enough rest, so don't bother her. You can stay with her in case you notice any movements, call me right away." Evans explained to his anxious brother.
"Thanks, Brother. It was an accident. she suddenly appeared out of nowhere and run in front of our car. We still have no idea how it occurred...It happened so fast!" Eric roughly explained what happened to his concerned brother.
Evans's mind traveled back to the thoughts of the girl he met the previous night on his way to the hospital, doing the exact same thing.
He wondered if this has become a norm nowadays. Since when did running in front of a moving car seem like the easiest suicide attempt for people? How shocking!
They don't think about the driver ending up in trouble or being convicted for a crime he knew nothing about. As long as they fulfill their wish to die. Such a pity!
"I am off...I am needed at the hospital. I left my critical patients to come here. Are you sure you are okay? You don't need checkup too?" Evans turned to confirm his brother's well-being.
"No! I am alright...no need to worry about me." Eric replied.
"Take care of her....bye!" Evans left immediately after his statement to return to the hospital.
"See you in the morning..thanks for making it on such short notice. This will make up for missing my party." Eric called out behind his brother who was long gone, but he was sure Evans heard him.
Part of the reason why Evans was hasty to leave was to avoid his brother's interrogation about missing his party tonight. But when he heard Eric's statement about making up for the party, he grinned.
His hell of a brother let him off easily for missing his birthday party.
"Thank God!...
What do you think of Evans and Eric's relationship?
