Pei Yueran had indeed arrived some minutes ago, and her eyes were currently red from listening to Han Yichen's emotional words. She wiped her eyes with the handkerchief that Li Chuanmo made sure she always carried along before walking into the cafeteria.
It was a pity that Li Chuanmo wasn't there. She felt like she could have leaned on his strength.
Just as she took a step in, she heard Han Leifeng's voice, "Don't say that. Your mother is your mother, but I'm also your father. It's a fact that can't be changed. Besides, all I'm doing is for you. You're my only son. Who do you think will inherit all my assets?"
Before Han Yichen could respond, Pei Yueran walked in, "He doesn't need it."
Han Yichen looked at her like he had just seen his savior, "Mom!"
Pei Yueran sat next to him and touched his cheek, "Mom is here."
"Yueran, you didn't have to come." Han Leifeng said in a servile manner. Looking at her elegant bearing, his hands were itching to cup her fair face. Then he met her eyes, cold without a trace of warmth towards him. The same pair of eyes that used to always light up when he was nearby.
How did they get here?
"If I didn't come, perhaps you would have kidnapped my son." Pei Yueran said in an accusation-laden tone . She was so angry. In spite of everything she said, he still came?
It was too much for Han Leifeng. The heartache surged forth and threatened to consume him. "Yueran, how could you say a thing like that? He is my son."
Pei Yueran was tired of this argument, but it was a fact, "No one said he wasn't. I only asked you to give me time to speak to him first!"
"I did! I waited for more than a week and you didn't say anything, that's why I came looking for him myself!" Han Leifeng almost yelled due to his growing frustration.
"Don't shout at my Mom!" Han Yichen glared at him. Han Leifeng, angry at what he saw as lack of manners, glowered at him right back.
"Let's all calm down and stop this." Pei Yueran said in time. One man and one boy looked away from each other and let out a breath simultaneously.
"Is this how you taught him? To shout at and disrespect his biological father?" Han Leifeng turned to Pei Yueran. His mood was clearly vacillating between hurt and anger.
"You provoked him." Pei Yueran said matter-of-factly.
Han Leifeng took a deep breath, "How? You were the one that didn't uphold the end of your promise." He said with a calmer tone.
He was glued to his phone for the past ten days, waiting for her to call or text him so that he could come over, but she never did. "You neither responded to my texts nor picked my calls. What was I supposed to do?"
Pei Yueran paused. Her first reaction was, "How did you get my number?" She couldn't recall giving it to him. In hindsight, she really should have.
Han Leifeng looked away, "Since Gao Tinghua refused to give me, I called your office and—"
"You did what?" Pei Yueran was about flaring up again, but controlled herself. It was her fault for not giving him in the first place. She just hoped he didn't say nonsense to Min Shiyi.
"So did she give you?"
Seeing that she had calmed down, Han Leifeng continued, "She said that she would get back to me, then she later called me back and gave it to me. But I didn't receive any response except an "I'm busy, don't disturb me."
Pei Yueran didn't realize that. Since she and Li Chuanmo traveled together, he was almost always with her phone as she used any free time she had to rest.
He usually informed her of any important call or messages she had, so she didn't miss anything. And even after she collected her phone this morning, there were no calls or messages from unfamiliar numbers.
"I didn't receive anything," She said, even as she made a mental note to ask Li Chuanmo about it later. If he truly got her number, she should have seen some traces on her call history at least. But there was nothing.
Han Leifeng didn't believe her, "Yueran, are you just saying this because you don't want to admit you were avoiding me? Why are you doing this? Was what I did so unforgivable? Wasn't I just thinking in the interest of all of us?"
He truly couldn't understand. What did he do that was so bad? Why couldn't she just see reasons with him?
Pei Yueran was speechless. Was she the odd one here? Really?
Han Yichen rolled his eyes. This man was definitely delusional. He wanted to say something, but Pei Yueran put her hand on his arm, "Xiao Chen, why don't you excuse us? Go and get the things that I brought for you and Yuchen."
Han Yichen looked from her to Han Leifeng, then he nodded, stood up and walked away without acknowledging him.
"Yueran, what did you tell my son to make him behave like this towards me?" Han Leifeng said with a pained look in his eyes.
Now that Han Yichen had walked out, Pei Yueran lost her temper freely and almost exploded, "Your son, your son, your son! That's all you talk about! If you loved him so much, where were you all this while? Where were you when he cried for his father?
"Where were you when he had to stop going to the playground because his playmates were laughing at him for not having a father? Where were you when he decided to stop telling me about father's day trips and celebrations?
"Where were you when he had to accompany me to the cemetery to meet his so-called "dead father"?" Pei Yueran flung the question after question at him elegantly without pause.
"Now you sit there and ask me what I told him? Why didn't you stay back and teach him yourself since you are such a great teacher and you're the only one that cares so much about his upbringing?"
She said all that in one breath before she calmed down. Without looking at Han Leifeng who was currently stunned, she closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
"Yueran, I said I'm sorry. I really am. I didn't mean for things to turn out the way it did at all." Han Leifeng said in a low voice, ashamed and suitably chastised.
Pei Yueran was not in the mood to listen to his incessant apologies. She said tiredly, "Forget it, that's all in the past. So what do you want? What did you plan to achieve by coming here behind my back to meet him?"
Han Leifeng looked at her for a full minute before he said firmly, "I want my family back."
Pei Yueran couldn't help it, she laughed.
