Capítulo 69: The attack begins

Without much thought, as the zombie watched him, Arnold knelt on the ground. His idea of manipulating the Breeder seemed completely stupid at the time. He could feel the power of his superior, especially now that he was a Windwalker. That thing could take him out in a second.

"What happened? Why are you attacking my Haven?"

"I-I'm sorry, I cast a spell by mistake."

"Spell? Our wind doesn't hurt like that, show me the spell."

With trembling hands, Arnold pointed to a wall and cast his spell. A ball of earth hit the wall and exploded shortly after. A few fragments even hit the Breeder, who recoiled slightly in surprise. The zombie turned to look at Arnold intently.

"Different, mighty one. Come with me to the attack."

Arnold found it impossible to resist the command, so he simply walked over to the Breeder, who held him with one hand and then flew out of the hole in the wall.

Moments later, a pale Menil emerged from the stairs. He had heard part of what had happened, so now his task would be much more difficult. However, he could count himself lucky, for the Breeder completely forgot his presence. He was indeed like a child, a powerful and amoral one. Menil suppressed a shudder and felt some pity for the path Arnold had chosen.

Wasting no time, Menil approached the hole in the wall, made sure the Breeder was not nearby and soared through the dark night. To his surprise, his eyes allowed him to see in the dark without any problem, which he decided to use to his advantage.

He took out his walkie talkie and tried to get through to Leonard, who answered a few seconds later.

"The Breeder has Arnold and it looks like he's going to order him to attack them. They'll have to find some way to neutralize him."

"Well, you've managed to disappoint me. Not that it was a surprise really."

"This is not the time for this Leonard, I have good news, I evolved into a Windwalker, I am able to fly and I can see in the dark without problems. I'm not very powerful so I'll replace Rony."

Leonard was quiet for a moment.

"That's good to hear, you do that. By the way, did Arnold evolve too?"

"Yes, but I didn't get to see him before the Breeder took him away. but I don't rule out that he's a Windwalker too, though."

"Why do you think so?"

"I don't know, instinct, you might say. I'm a Windwalker now and I suspect the Breeder has something to do with it."

"Well, I'll be sure to alert everything in that case."

"One more thing, Leonard."

"What?"

"Whatever you do, don't harm the other infected."

Leonard was silent for a moment. Menil waited patiently for his answer as he rested standing on a nearby rooftop.

"If they stay quiet, nothing will happen. I promised Adam too, so you have nothing to worry about. Now, get to work."

Menil watched the walkie talkie for a moment longer before sighing with relief. Then he looked at his surroundings and took to the air. The cold night wind hit his face, but it didn't affect him much. He hadn't noticed it until that moment, but flying felt so familiar and simple that it required almost no effort on his part.

It rose up into the sky until it could see the entire housing estate. Some of the street lighting was still working, especially in the areas near the suburb. From there he could see so much detail that it was amazing. Unfortunately, block 4, where the haven was located, was dark, so he would have to get closer to see the details.

However, there was one big problem. A horde of zombies were approaching Block 4 from all sides. Menil contacted Leonard and alerted him to the danger.

But what worried Menil most was the Breeder's position. After watching for a while, he found him on the roof of a building in block 3, watching block 4 carefully.

Arnold was at his side and, fortunately, neither he nor the Breeder noticed Menil, who was watching them from a building on the other side of block 3.

Arnold was visibly nervous, as he kept watching the Breeder. Also, unbeknownst to Menil, the two were talking.

"A human can dodge very quickly. It's very annoying, I need to kill it first."

"I-I think you mean Miguel, he has powers that help him predict attacks."

The Breeder glanced briefly at Arnold and looked back towards block 4, where he could feel the fight starting.

"That's why I have to kill him first, he's annoying."

Arnold just nodded and looked towards block 4. From where they were, you couldn't see much, but Arnold was sure that the Breeder was somehow able to sense something, so he decided to wait. He turned his gaze briefly to block 2, where Menil should still be.

"E-h, what are we going to do about Menil?"

"Who?" asked the Breeder.

"The Stalker who came with me, I told you he's on the side of the humans."

"What can a mere Stalker do? Even if he has evolved, he poses no danger to me."

Arnold suppressed his fear and decided to answer.

"It doesn't all come down to force. He can give humans what they need most, information. He has a... Device that allows him to talk to them from afar."

"Stop it. Don't pay any more attention to the matter. The fight's already started anyway, and it's your job to use that spell of yours to kill humans."

Arnold's throat lumped. The Breeder wasn't paying the slightest attention to Menil's threat, but he also wanted him to go and fight Adam and his group, which, to be honest, he didn't like at all. During the escape from Block 3, he had watched that group fight and had been impressed.

However, he soon put his doubts aside and decided to fight. One of the things he liked most about becoming an infected was that fear affected him much less. Since he had decided to join the zombies, he knew that the time would come when he would have to become a killer. He would be lying if he said he was comfortable with that fact, but as he waited by the Breeder, he had hardened his will.

"There it is."

Without warning, a white spear appeared in the Breeder's hands. The zombie raised it and pointed it towards block 4. Menil, who was watching the scene, shouted into the walkie talkie.

Arnold heard the scream and turned to look, but almost lost his balance when the Breeder launched a full-powered attack.

Moments earlier, Leonard had been alerted by Menil and shouted to everyone in the car park that the Breeder would attack. Miguel heard him, so when, seconds later, he sensed danger, he threw himself to the ground without hesitation. But even then, it wasn't enough.

The spear hit the asphalt next to him and exploded with force. Miguel was hit by countless fragments of what was once part of the car park.

Dazed, he tried to get up, but found it impossible. The pain came soon after. Luckily, Miriam came to him within seconds.

However, she didn't like what she saw: a piece of asphalt had buried itself in the old soldier's back, so she would have to be careful when pulling it out.

"Get him out of here, it looks like the real attack is starting," Adam's voice was heard above everyone else and Miriam looked up. Unfortunately, Adam was right. So far only a handful of Stalkers had attacked them, but now an entire wave had entered the car park.

"Get back! Inside the superblock, now," shouted Leonard.

Miriam carried Miguel as best she could on her back and backed away. However, she couldn't help but look around for Marlen, who was fighting with Adam against the nearby Stalkers. To his relief, they were both retreating. As they all crossed the bridge, Adam turned his gaze and activated his trap.

Miriam staggered as the car park floor gave way, sending a large group of Stalkers into thousands upon thousands of sharp stone stalactites that pierced their weak bodies.

Adam watched the scene with a frown. He didn't like to use the trap on mere Stalkers, but they were too numerous and according to the information Leonard had obtained from Menil, the Breeder had even more to throw at them.

From the superblock numerous gunshots rang out. Adam looked up and saw Krieg firing from the fourth floor. Everyone in the shelter had moved towards the superblock in preparation for the attack. Adam had feared the old man would be a problem, but Krieg had left his house without complaint.
