Chapter Six

I look around the large room, the light from the lamps along the walls lit up the room just enough to see where I am going. Unlike the room above us that gave off enough light to see everyone. The hummer is placed where it belongs, among others just like it. The floor had some kind of railing that allowed the hummers to move without a driver. It reminded me of a toy train track set I had as a boy.

The men watch me from the watch post, one walks out of his small room, and walks over to Co and the others. "Glass Demon, Hummer eighteen, correct?"

Co gives a nod as he hands the man the keys. "Yes." the man nods back and asks a few more questions before going back to the watch-room.

Mr.Holland puts a hand on my shoulder. "Once we get you settled in, we will call your mom and tell her what is going on. Hopefully, she won't turn me in." Holland utters, shaking his head, but smiles anyway.

Co glances at the two of us. "Okay. Let's go." Co calls out to us. His violet eyes narrow, brows close together, and his lips press into a thin line. Co turns on his heels and starts walking to the opening that leads to a tunnel.

Co along with Jasmine and Joel stay ahead of Mr.Holland and me, we walk in complete silence. In what seemed like a never-ending road underground. It was light with lamps a few feet apart from each other, casting shadows on the ground.

"Where are we going?" I ask Mr.Holland in a low voice.

"The nest." Mr.Holland answers. "The nest is miles away, we are walking to the cars that will take us there."

Soon enough, the tunnel's opening widened as we came to a place with what looked like golf carts waiting in a row against each wall beside a small one-room watch post. The men on watch had a scow and watch us as Co and Joel went up to the watch post.

In low voices they talk, Co signs something before they are handed keys to the carts. The two males walk over to the car and get in on the driver's side. "Come on, Each car only has four seats, Uncle, you are with me, Jasmine picks a seat," Co orders. Jasmine got in the car with Joel "and for you, the Lame Wolf. you are with me as well since you like to follow Zac."Co smirks. Rolling my eyes I get into the back seat and hold onto the pole. Co starts the golf cart and backs out of the parking space.

After what felt like a few minutes of driving, we came to a similar place where Co and Joel received the keys. Once we are close enough, Co and Holland got off and of course I follow. Joel and Jasmine get out of theirs as two young men, a boy and an older male walk over. Co and Joel hand the keys to the young man who drove them to the right spot.

As everyone hands over their weapons to a young boy, an angry voice booms through the air. "Co!"

The voice belonged to a female with short hair and was wearing tight clothes than anyone here. I have a feeling she was the town's bicycle. Jasmine rolls her eyes as the female makes her way to us. Joel stays out of her way as if she is the devil. "Co," The girl said in a much sweeter voice. "Where have you been?" She gently touches his arm.

Co just walks away from her. "I was getting Zac, Daisy," Co says in annoyance as he hands the keys of the hummer to an older male. "Besides. I don't know why it matters." Co turns to Daisy with a hateful glare. "I told you, I want nothing to do with you." Daisy looks shocked by what Co had to say.

I felt someone lean over and whisper in my ear. "They used to be a thing," I look over my shoulder to see the dark head beauty, Jasmine. "Well, kinda. Co caught her sleeping with someone else. In his bed." She says, clicking her tongue at the end. Joel beside her nods.

"But anyway. We didn't properly introduce ourselves. I'm Jasmine, and Mr. Quiet here is Joel." Jasmine introduces herself as she holds out her hand.

"Kyle," I say back as I take her hand. "So what is this place?" I question as I motion to everything around me.

It wasn't Jasmine who answered me. "This is a rebel nest, young man. A long-forgotten one by the people inside the walls." I look to where the voice came from, a wrinkled old man slowly walks over to us with the help of a cane in hand. The old man wore what seems like a white robe-like one might see in the movies. His hair was just as white. "And we are the rebels that live in it." The old man says with a sense of pride as he leans on his cane.

Rebels. The people I wanted to know so much about were standing right in front of me. The way all of them stood was of pride in themselves. The rebels. Thought to be gone. None of the research I appended to do repaired me for this moment.

"But every textbook in the world says the rebels died out. Why?" I ask the one question that may answer why only the military was allowed outside the wall.

The old man chuckles as everyone looks at him. "Boy, history is written by the victors. They will write anything to make themselves look good. That's the thing about history, it's just a story." The old man steps closer to me. "I am the seeing eye of this nest. You are what we call a lame wolf, someone who should not be here, but is." The seeing eye looks past me and at Holland. "But there is nothing we can do about that now." He says, slowly walking around me. "Zac Holland always stays a week before leaving. You will have to do the same."

"A week? I can't stay a week. My mom will be worried sick." I protested. I can't stay a week, my mom would call the police and have everyone looking for me.

"That's why you should mind your own business and not have followed my uncle."Co snaps as he pushs himself off the pillar he was leaning on.

"Woah, there Co," Jasmine put her arm around my shoulder. "Like the seeing eye said, Kyle is here and there nothing we can do about it for the next week. Then he can leave with your uncle." Jasmine says becoming the voice of reason to Co.

"And the boy will need a place to stay, and since your uncle is the only one who knows him. Kyle will be staying with you, Co." the old man called the Seeing Eye says as he looks back to Co. "Understand?"

Co nods, clearly upset as the old man left. "As you see it." Co mumbles under his breath once the Seeing Eye was far enough.

I look at the male, named Co. "Uncle? You are Holland's nephew?" I said puzzled. I didn't think the nephew would look like him. I thought it was going to be a younger boy. The photo on the desk back at school was clearly out of date.

Co narrows his eyes as he stares at me. "Why the hell would I risk my neck to go get him if he wasn't my uncle?" He says. Jasmine put a gentle hand on his shoulder and whispers to him.

Co seems to relax as Jasmine spoke to him. Joel gently touches Jasmine's shoulder before moving his hands. Jasmines understood what he wanted. I watch in amazment as the three of them move their hands in different ways.

"Sign language." Holland said as he nods his head to the three of them. "It's how people who can't talk or hear can commutate. It's something the wall no longer has." He explains. "It's not easy to learn,"

Co take a deep breath as he motions for me and Holland. Holland puts a hand on my back and leads me to an elevator, where the Seeing Eye and Daisy are waiting. Daisy pushs a button with an arrow pointing up on it as we get closer.

Once the doors open everyone piles in after the Seeing Eye, Joel pushes a button with the number one on it. The elevator jerks up, making me lean on the wall waiting for my stomach to catch up with me. I hate the feeling of my stomach dropping, it made me feel sick as if I was going to lose everything I ate that day, even though it was only one floor.

As the elevator came to a stop, I let out a groan as my stomach caught up with me. Mr.Holland chuckles as he pats my back. "Don't worry, kid. You get used to it." He ensures me. I doubt it, there are elevators at school that the students are allowed to use, I only use them when I'm going to be late.

Once the doors are open I get off, allowing everyone behind me to get off as well. The elevator doors open to a whole different world. Nothing like the tunnel we were in, nothing like the city in the wall. It was more than that. It was alive. So much alive.
