The First Step To Change
I looked out the window. The sky was tar-black and the large clouds were moving towards me. I heard a tapping on the window and then it became a pitter-patter.
People ran for cover and umbrellas were opened as the clouds spat out their beads of water.
"Sakagami-san, I am deeply sorry for your loss. Is there anything we can do to make it up for you" A voice called out for me breaking me out of my thoughts.
I turned to him and stared before replying to his previous question," There is nothing you can do at the moment. If I need anything I will call you". He looked concerned but just nodded in acceptance. He stood up to take his leave and turned to me one last time. "Your father may have gone today, but he will forever remain in our hearts. He was a brave man and died a brave death." I nodded and watched as he departed. I looked back outside and continued to watch as the sky poured out. It seemed as if the sky was crying for the loss I had also faced. "Ah…I'm crying," I muttered in surprise as I felt tears slide down my face. At this moment, I finally realized I was alone in this world, my father was no more. At this realization, I broke down. I allowed everything I had been holding to be released. Soon enough I stood up and staggered to my dad's room, looking for the one thing he left of him. I found the box under his bed and brought out what lay in it. A pair of glasses, one that my dad forced himself not to wear. He said it made him look weak, yet it was what would make me feel strong. I took it out carefully and set it on my face. I had to continue no matter what I couldn't stop moving forward. "Dad, wherever you are. I'm going to make you proud," I vowed in that quiet room. I stepped out of the room and closed it leaving everything the way he left it.
Tomorrow was the beginning of a new school year and I had to be prepared. I had to keep going because the world would continue as if nothing ever happened.
The sun shone through my window, indicating the start of a new day. Reluctantly I stood up and headed for the bathroom to brush my teeth. I caught a glance at myself in the mirror and honestly, I wasn't surprised. "I look like shit," I mumbled. I stripped myself of my clothes and stepped into the shower. The warm water drizzled on my body. I stood there for a while before scrubbing my body of any dirt. After ensuring I was clean, I stepped out of the bathroom and headed to the wardrobe. I didn't have the energy to dress fancy so I simply took out a sweater and shorts. I applied small makeup and headed to school. If I was to walk I would arrive at school in about 5 minutes. After contemplating I decided to enjoy the fresh air surrounding me.
I arrived at school in no time and walked through the halls that had no signs of changing. I headed to my locker to get the materials I would need for the day. "Hyuno-chan!!!" A voice shouted enthusiastically. I turned around and noticed a person rushing at me. Before I could even realize it, I was pushed to the floor with a body on mine. "Hyuno-chan, it's been so long" The Voice professed. "Yuka-chan, I understand you are excited but please get off me" I pleaded. "Ah, right" She quickly got off me and apologized. I dusted my body and looked at her. "What has got you so excited" I questioned. "Well, it has been a while since I saw you so of course I'd be excited." She responded. "Anyways, how have you-" She started before getting cut off by the bell. "Oh, no we're late for class." She exclaimed. She took my hand and dragged me to our class.
The rest of the day went by uneventfully and before I realized it school had ended. I was walking with Yuka when she brought up an interesting topic. "Hey, have you heard of the new game being released?"She inquired. "Hmm, no I haven't," I reacted. "It's being released in a few days. You should try it, you'll be able to experience a whole new world" She explains. "That seems interesting. I'll check it out. Well, this is my stop. I'll see you tomorrow." I bid her farewell. "Ok, bye!" She waved and ran off. I entered my house and looked around. "Right, I live alone now" I murmured not being used to the quiet environment. I went to my room and thought of what Yuka told me. I would like to try it, she said it is like a new world, maybe I can try it out. I took out my laptop and put in an order for the headset and game, it would arrive an hour before the release of the game. I dozed off wondering what paths lay ahead of me.
