District 9

One day, in district 9, a young man named Kai Chao practices both lines of attacks and defense with so much accuracy and focus, using a wing chun dummy. After awhile, Kai's dog, Lucky, comes in at barks at him. He throws one more strike at the dummy, before looking down at the dog and smiling, kneeling down to pet him.

"Alright, I got the message. Let's go for a walk, ok boy?" Kai says.

Lucky starts to lick his face when he hears about going for a walk. Soon, the two leave the small house to get some food. As they walk through the woods, Kai sees some of district Nine's people and the struggles they have to go through. Him and Lucky soon make it to a fence and climb under it and head to the woods.

After awhile, Kai spots a deer from behind a tree. He signals to Lucky to be quiet and pulls out a knife from the back of his pouch. Kai slowly approaches behind the deer, trying to sneak up on it

"Hey Kai!" A voice yells from behind him, scaring off the deer and frustrating Kai. He turns around and sees his bestfriend, Sammy with a big smile on his face.

"You are such a dick, you know that, right?" Kai tells him.

Sammy laughs.

"Oh come on, what were you actually gonna do with a hundred pound deer? Especially on Reaping day, there's peacekeepers everywhere." Sammy says.

Kai scoffs, throwing his knife into a tree.

"I can handle the peacekeepers. Besides, I'm hungry." Kai says.

Sammy goes to pet Lucky, but the dog growls at him, causing him to jump back as Kai laughs.

"Why do your dog hate me?"

Kai smirks.

"Probably because you cost us a deer. Now we'll just have to settle on a bird."

Sammy is confused.

"What bird?" Sammy asks.

Kai pulls out another knife and flips it in his hand and throws it up, hitting a bird, causing it to fall to the ground.

"That bird." Kai answers with a smirk.

Sammy jokingly scoffs.

"Show off." Sammy says, playfully pushing Kai.

Later the three of them sit together in the woods, looking at the trees. Sammy then pulls out some bread from his bag.

"Here. I owe you for the deer."

Kai takes a deep breath of gratitude.

"There might be a God afterall."

Sammy laughs as Kai takes the bread and bites a piece out of it. He then gives some to Lucky and pets his head. Kai puts the rest up, then looks over to his friend who has a worried look on his face.

"What's wrong?" Kai asks.

Sammy hesitates answering for a moment.

"My names in forty two times today...I don't know, I guess I got this bad feeling...I'm scared, Kai."

Kai sighs, then puts his hand on his friend shoulder, giving him a reassuring smile.

"Hey, my names in there just as many times as yours." Kai says.

"It's different for you, I don't know any crazy karate." Sammy says.

Kai chuckles.

"Actually, it's a mixture of wing chun, Tai Chi, Bajiquan, Taekwondo, and a hint of Shaolin Kung Fu."

"Whatever. The point is, you're way more prepared than I am. You actually have a chance at surviving."

Kai thinks to himself for a moment.

"Its going to be alright, Sammy. We'll get through this year, just like the other years." Kai says.

Sammy smiles a bit, trusting his friend. The two friends then just stare out to the wilderness, not thinking about what's coming.

Later, Kai and Lucky walk through town, heading to someone else's house. They then pass by a little boy sitting on the ground, starving. Kai looks at the child, almost able to see his ribcage and feels sorry for him. He then kneels down and gives the boy the bread with a kind smile on his face. The hungry child quickly grabs the bread and stuffs his face.

"Thank you." The boy says.

Kai smiles.

"Sure, kid." Kai says as he and Lucky walk away.

Soon Kai makes to a house, belonging to a man named Griff, one of the oldest people in district Nine, and the man who took care of Kai when he was child, new to America. Griff scoffs at the sight of Lucky, never liking dogs.

"I told you not to bring that mutt in here." Griff tells him.

Kai smiles, putting his bag down.

"Relax old man, he's house broken."

He then sits beside Griff.

"How are you feeling today?"

Griff leans back in his chair.

"Well, I'm still old, so terrible."

The two laugh, but the old man gets serious.

"There's a chance you might be chosen for The Hunger Games. You know that, right?"

Kai thinks about it for a moment before smiling.

"Do I look worried?" Kai asks.

Griff smirks.

"No, and that what's worries me. Every year, when they don't call your name- part of you looks almost... disappointed." Griff says.

Kai sighs.

"Look...I train just in case my name ever gets drawn. So I can be prepared, that's it."

Griff stares at Kai for a moment.

"You've been hitting that damn wing chun dummy, since you were a snot nose kid, coming here from China."

"So what? You think I'm looking for an excuse to fight?" Kai asks.

Griff stays silent for a moment.

"I hope you're not." Griff says.

Kai thinks to himself for a moment.

"I hear you, old man. Just, don't get all stressed out, you know that causes wrinkles and for a guy your age you can't afford that." Kai says.

Griff scoffs

"You're a pain in the ass, kid." Griff says.

Kai chuckles, putting his hands on the old mans shoulders.

"Come on Griff, you know you love me."

"Aw shut up and cook something, I'm starving. And take this dog outside."

Kai smirks and heads into the kitchen. When he is alone, he can't stop thinking about tomorrow, and whether or not Griff is actually right about him wanting to be selected. He then looks at his necklace that and continues to think to himself.
