Picking a class

[Selene's Pov]

Standing in a line in front of Belroth, currently inside of the only building in Laowh that wasn't made out of wood, as well as the only building that wasn't high up in a tree, it was finally time for our 'graduation'.

It was a huge temple, fully carved out of white stone, with all kinds of murals and decorations all around the room. In the middle of it, right beside the old Belroth, there was a blue orb standing on a pedestal.

It was one of the many orbs spread around the world, a gift from the goddess herself as a means for the mortals on Terros to grow stronger, so they could defend themselves from evil.

Belroth spoke with a gentle smile on his face, "It is finally time for you to choose your own paths in life, and although I know that your roads might get tough, I wish you all nothing but happiness in the future."

A whole month had passed since we arrived in this world, and somehow this moment felt a lot more emotional than I thought it would.

Belroth had been our teacher, our mentor, ever since we were transferred here, and even though we weren't elves native to Laowh, he still treated us almost as children of his own, teaching us everything we needed to know.

"Peter, you may step forward."

"Yes, sir."

Our broad-shouldered vanguard stepped forward, making his short blonde hair wobble a bit with his steps. Then, he put his hand on the blue orb, making his face tense up a bit as he was concentrating on the information displayed in front of him.

This was because the orb was a medium for which the three races got to choose what kind of path they would walk in life, and what class they would pick. Something that was only possible after reaching level ten, a level we all had managed to obtain by hunting monsters around the forests.

It turns out that the trait we had allowed us to grow a lot faster than the natives of this world, with our growth being more than five times faster than others. Not only that, but unlike others, who had different kinds of potential, which meant they could only reach a certain level, we supposedly didn't have that kind of limit.

Suddenly, a bright light enveloped Harry, who then a moment later turned around, facing us with a wide smile on his face. Luckily, it didn't take long until he quenched our curiosity as he told us what he had chosen.

"I am now a squire!"

Nodding a bit, pleased to hear that the man had made a wise choice, Belroth called upon the next one of us, Lissy, to choose her class.

To that, the slender girl also stepped forward and put her hand on the orb and it didn't even take more than a minute before she had picked her class, Rogue, and went back into our line.

Repeating this process, it didn't take long until all my former classmates, now comrades, had picked a class.

Harry, the squire, Lissy, the rogue, Peter, the skinny archer, Matthew, the spearman, and Olivia, the naturalist, a healing class.

As a result, I was now the only one left to choose what path I wanted to walk, putting my hand on the orb as I felt the expectant looks from behind. In reaction to this, a blue transparent panel showed up, very reminiscent of our status pages.

It wasn't a surprise to see that all the options had something to do with using magic, as I already knew from my status and my talents that it was the area of expertise that I was the most suited for.

Even though everyone got to pick their own class, it was only possible to pick something that was suitable for the individual. For example, just as I couldn't choose to become a warrior as it didn't complement my status, Harry wouldn't be able to become a mage as it didn't suit him.

Naturally, we had also already talked a bit with Belroth about how we should approach picking our class if there was something special to keep in mind, but he had only told us to go with our hearts.

Sadly, my heart was pretty confused when seeing these options.

On one hand, it felt quite natural to pick frost mage, as I was already able to use ice magic, but on the other, it felt like I might be missing out if I did so. I honestly had no idea what the best option was.

So in the end, I simply decided to jumble all of them up in my head while injecting my mana into the orb, trying to make the process as random as possible. I was aware that it was a stupid way of choosing something that could determine the rest of my life, but I also had a feeling that no matter what class I got, it would somehow work out in the end.

Feeling the sensation of my mana entering the orb, as to then later gently return to me, filling me with a pleasantly warm sensation, almost as if the goddess herself embraced me, I brought out my status again.

'Elementalist?'

Elementalist, a magic specialist class just like the mages, with the difference of only being able to use elemental magic, unlike mages who could use general types of spells as well as their dedicated element.

Turning around to my friends, and seeing Belroth's comforting smile, I couldn't say that I was unhappy about the class I got, but at the same time, I still couldn't help but get a bit worried.

A worry that once again made me think about...

'Huh?'

My face paled as I realized that something weird was going on. For some reason, when I tried to think about the man who always had an answer, the man who had finally gathered the courage to confess to me, I couldn't even remember his name.

Worse yet was that I for some reason didn't feel like it was such a big deal as if it was natural for me to forget about him. Almost as if he hadn't even been real in the first place, almost as if that man had never existed.

However, just as I was about to accept that as a fact, my mind twisted back into place.

'Aldric! His name is Aldric!'

"Selene, is there something wrong?"

Bringing me out of my own mind, Belroth's face had turned into one of pure worry, seeing me suddenly stop without saying or doing anything. Not wanting to stress my comrades or Belroth out more than necessary, I simply kept silent about what had happened to me, forcing myself to smile instead.

"Ah, no I'm fine. I was just thinking a little about the class I picked."

Putting his hand on my shoulder, I could see that the old elf didn't fully believe me, but he still chose to respect my decision of not telling the truth.

"I see. Then, why don't we talk a bit more as we go get something to eat? We have prepared quite a feast in celebration of you getting your classes, so it would seem like a good opportunity to clear out any questions you might have."

"That does sound nice, Belroth."

Releasing his hand, he began to lead us out of the temple, as the others started gathering around me, clearly curious as I had still not told them what class I chose.

Of course, Harry who was the most energetic out of all of us was the one to open his mouth first.

"Hey, what did you pick, Selene? I'm guessing that you are some kind of mage, but what kind did you pick? Did you get any new skills?"

As I was answering his questions with a smile, we kept walking out to the vibrant world around us, making our way up to the treetops once again by using the long, circular wooden bridge before us, leading us high up in the air.

At the same time, I was now desperately repeating Aldric's name in my head, over and over, just to make sure I wouldn't somehow forget it again.

Even just thinking about the fact that I forgot the name of the one I loved so dearly, and had loved for so long, was terrifying, enough so that my stomach couldn't stop twisting and turning.

What I didn't realize at this time, however, was the fact that even if I managed to remember his name, I could no longer remember his face.
