“But he’s right,” JT said.

“What?”

“He’s right. Michelle isn’t going to want to press this. It’ll be over in a few days.”

“You can’t know that,” David argued.

“I know Michelle.”

“It might not even be for a few days,” Gideon said. “He’s gotta have a bail hearing, right? Jesse doesn’t have a record. That’ll count for something.”

“That’s right. Besides, they haven’t mistreated me. And I know what happened. I can answer their questions without making the situation worse.” JT squeezed David’s hand. “Don’t worry about me. The important thing right now is to not make the situation worse.”

“From where I’m sitting, the situation is already pretty bad,” David muttered.

“Derek’s not going to let anything bad happen to him in here, either.” Gideon stuffed his fists into his armpits. It was hard seeing Jesse, even if it wasn’t his Jesse, holding hands with someone else. “You can trust him to stand by us, no matter what.”
