“Anything new there?”

Derek nodded. “The hearing on re-opening the case was this morning.”

“Oh? How’d that go?”

“We got permission, thank God. Rae, that tattoo artist you hired to do Emma’s tat, testified with a shitload of supporting evidence. Including pictures. The judge couldn’t ignore it, even with the Coolidges there raising a stink.”

Gideon ground to a halt. “Wait. Emma’s parents showed up?”

“They’ve got a right to know what’s going on.” Derek grimaced. “As much as we might hate it.”

“Why would they raise a stink? They should be thrilled Emma’s not dead.”

“You’d think. They tried to argue it would be too disruptive in their time of mourning, but the judge wasn’t stupid enough to fall for it.”

At least there were some small favors still in this world. Resuming their steps, Gideon mulled over what this meant. Emma’s case re-opened. There was only one logical place to start.
