Chapter 64: The Charcoal Seller
Due to carrying a terrifying Zanbato(horse-slaying saber), Chu Yang couldn't use any form of transportation or conveniently enter towns. He had no choice but to travel through the wilderness.
Moonlight didn't illuminate much of the wild, and Chu Yang hadn't brought any lamps or other lighting tools. He could only cast an illumination spell to make his hands glow.
From a distance, Chu Yang's hands resembled car headlights, swinging as he walked, giving off a somewhat eerie vibe in the dark.
"When will I learn the undetectable extension charm? Carrying a big sword around the world every day is really inconvenient. Next time I meet with that top student, I must remind them to pick some useful spells."
Most of the magic Chu Yang knew consisted of basic spells, but they were still quite practical.
For example, the Fire Charm could start a fire in the wild, an essential survival skill.
The Scouring Charm could clean objects or even people. The Water Repelling and Flame-Freezing Charm made things waterproof and fireproof, both indispensable for traveling.
The Anapneo spell could clear airways, and some Healing spells that reduced pain, helping bandages and splints secure wounds. In critical moments, these could save lives.
But because he lacked a wand, Chu Yang from the other world couldn't control magic well, often causing small accidents, like starting a wildfire by mistake.
Chu Yang from the Pirate World and the Naruto World had similar experiences.
Thus, unless it was a particularly safe spell, they wouldn't casually use magic.
With illumination, Chu Yang traveled quickly, and since the island country wasn't large, he reached the Sagiri Mountain area within two days and found a small wooden cabin in the forest.
The man named Urokodaki, who was chopping firewood, sensed a human presence. He hurried back into the cabin, put on his mask, and came out to see Chu Yang walking toward him with the Zanbato on his back.
The slowly approaching young man exuded a sense of pressure, making Sakonji Urokodaki slightly tense. If not for the lack of a demon scent from the other person, he would have drawn his sword.
"Are you Mr. Urokodaki?"
Hearing the youth call his name, Sakonji Urokodaki confirmed the other must be a member of the Demon Slayer Corps and relaxed, responding in a loud voice, "I am."
Chu Yang walked quickly over. "I have a letter here. Makomo asked me to deliver it to you."
Sakonji Urokodaki was startled, fearing it was bad news. His breathing quickened. "Is something wrong with her?"
Seeing his concern, Chu Yang realized he had misunderstood and quickly explained, "She was injured during the final selection and is currently recovering at the Butterfly Estate. She'll need some time to rest. She was worried you might be concerned, so she asked me to bring you this letter."
Upon hearing this, Sakonji Urokodaki let out a sigh of relief.
His tense body relaxed as he smiled and said, "Thank you, young man."
Chu Yang handed Sakonji Urokodaki the letter Makomo had written, politely replying, "It's no trouble. She and I went through the final selection together, so we're teammates of the same batch. Helping her is nothing."
If Butterfly Shinobu were here, she would have mocked Chu Yang for being fake, considering how unwilling he was to help earlier.
"Thank you." Sakonji Urokodaki nodded. When he heard that Chu Yang was also a new recruit who had gone through the final selection, a flash of interest appeared in his eyes.
Sakonji Urokodaki opened the envelope and began reading Makomo's letter. Chu Yang knew this could be a lengthy process, with the man's internal thoughts potentially spanning thousands of words.
Completely at ease, Chu Yang walked over to the water jar by the cabin, lifted the lid, and drank large gulps of water with a wooden ladle.
After half-quenched, Chu Yang was about to leave when his Kasugai Crow suddenly flew over, perched on the water jar, and began delivering his first mission assignment in human language.
Perhaps startled by the crow's voice, Sakonji Urokodaki carefully put the letter away and turned to Chu Yang, saying, "I was going to invite you to stay for a meal, but for us, no task is more important than a mission. Let me pack you some dry rations to take with you."
"That won't be necessary. I'm quite good at hunting in the wild and never lack for food," Chu Yang politely declined Sakonji Urokodaki's offer.
"Take it anyway, as a token of my appreciation." In the letter, Makomo had explained everything in detail. Sakonji Urokodaki now knew that this young man had slain the Hand Demon, allowing the souls of the dead children to finally find peace.
Chu Yang no longer refused. After sincerely thanking Sakonji Urokodaki, he calmly accepted the provisions.
Thus, after delivering the letter, Chu Yang immediately set off for the area where demons were reported to be appearing.
As Sakonji Urokodaki watched Chu Yang's departing figure, he stood motionless for a long time, lost in thought.
A few days later, Chu Yang arrived at a remote small town based on the location his Kasugai Crow had provided. To avoid causing panic, Chu Yang hid his Zanbato in a nearby forest before entering the town.
That said, even without the Zanbato, Chu Yang could still slay demons. It would just be more troublesome. Without Nichirin Blade's crimson ore to suppress the demon's regenerative ability, the fight could easily drag into a prolonged battle.
Though no real threat to Chu Yang, it would certainly be annoying.
Without the Zanbato's aura, Chu Yang's appearance transformed from a psychopathic killer into a sporty, sunny young man. His muscular arms stretched his clothes tightly.
As he walked, he noticed many passersby staring at him—both older sisters and young girls alike.
Unfortunately, Chu Yang was entirely focused on investigating demons. Unable to catch any scent, he expanded the range of his Observation Haki, hoping to pick up any clues.
"Hey! Tanjiro, we need some charcoal for our home! Thanks for fixing my chair last time."
"Tanjiro, my shop also needs some charcoal. Next time, could you bring some wild game too? I'll pay you well."
"Tanjiro, I forgot to pay you for the goods last time. I'll settle it today."
Just as he began using Observation Haki, a name kept surfacing in Chu Yang's mind! Tanjiro!
This person seemed to have a good reputation.
Everywhere Chu Yang went, people greeted him and bought things from him.
A charcoal seller...
Chu Yang suddenly remembered something important and began looking for this person named Tanjiro.
After turning down two streets, Chu Yang finally spotted a slender man outside a food stall, chatting with the owner.
The man carried a basket larger than himself, filled with charcoal, and held the hand of a young boy. The boy looked just like him, with red hair and a burn-like scar on his forehead.
The shop owner planned to buy all the charcoal in the man's basket to keep the store's heater running, making customers feel comfortable while eating.
The man named Tanjiro smiled. Business had gone well today. He managed to sell all his charcoal before nightfall.
