The Dead Forest

Knock! Knock!

Link grudgingly opened his eyes, he lifted his head and looked towards the door.

"W..who is it?" He barely managed to speak.

"Link, are you ok?" A voice spoke from the other side.

"Yeah. Why?" Link sat up and wore his shoes.

Squeak!

"Hey, sorry to bother you" The Innkeeper stood in front of the door, he had a plate of food in his hands "Its evening and you haven't come out of your room, so i thought i'd check on you"

Link smiled, he took the plate from the old man and spoke "Thank you, i was a bit tired yesterday that is all"

Link was touched by the old man's actions. After reassuring him he closed the door. He ate the food and went back to sleep, he felt like shit since he came back.

<Maybe it isn't only the lack of Mana and low HP that got you like this. Was it the Teleportation itself? And the rest only made it worse? How are you feeling?>

Zero sounded worried. Link's state was taking longer than she expected.

"I feel like I was thrown around for a whole day. I feel fine physically but I can't stop having the feeling of wanting to throw up. This reminds me of when i was a kid and would spin around until i was nauseated" Link muttered as he adjusted himself in bed.

<Let me check your Stats>

"The fuck is Space Distortion?" Link asked.

<A side effect perhaps?>

"Why would I get a side effect from a skill?"

<Well, that skill was not supposed to be used in that kind of situation. If not for the System casting it for you, it would be impossible to be used. It requires focus and perfect Mana control. Plus you didn't even have enough Mana for it, something affected you in the process. You were too unprepared yesterday Link>

"What do you mean too unprepared? What the fuck more did you want me to do? To deal with a group of scum I didn't even need to poison them, I could have just rushed in and killed them all myself, but those people came out of nowhere. How am i supposed to know this was something bigger than it appears. I did my best, so get off my back" Link frowned.

<Calm down, we both underestimated the situation. Plus it was your idea to buy the Recollection skill in the first place, if it was any other person they would have died in there easily or got involved in whatever those people are planning>

"Whatever. From what it says, i won't be able to do anything for 10 Hours" Lin continued "Add 1 Skill Point to 'Mana Print' and add the other one to 'Air Boost'"

<Sounds good>

****

Link spent most of the day laying in bed. He kept feeling awful until the 10 Hours mark passed, and he suddenly felt alive again.

It was late at night though, and him sleeping the whole day made him feel energetic.

"I'll get those bastards back for what they have done to me" Link muttered, leaving the City.

Link ran out, heading towards the Dead Forest. This territory belongs to an Undead Creature. From the information Link read in the Guild. The Creature looked like a giant bear with rotten flesh and black holes for eyes. This fiend was popular amongst the necromancers. Many went after it greedy for the ingredients and research they could get out of it, but to their unfortunate fate, the situation changed. They became it's toys instead, they were all either turned or fed upon by other undead.

Rumors said that the creature itself was not very strong. The groups that went after it could have easily killed it, but they never even got close. They were swarmed by undead animals, beasts and even humans. Everything that dies in that place comes back to serve it.

<You sure about this?>

"Yes" Link spoke "What i need right now is numbers"

<Numbers?>

"I can kill to my heart's content there. I can Level Up easily and won't need to go around looking for creatures that would provide me with little Exp" Link continued "I can easily run if it gets too dangerous"

He kept running east, and not long after, with Link's new and improved 'Air Boost' Skill, he made it to the area. Just as he had expected, nothing in that place looked alive. From the trees, grass and even the air felt gloomy and dead. It looked like a dry land with no hope.

"We're here" Link whispered.

<Don't underestimate anything anymore. We can't make the same mistake>

"Got it" Link said as he ran in. It did not take him long for a group of undead creatures to spot him. He saw Goblins, Wolves and even Trolls in there. Their bodies were decayed and rotten. The smell was disturbing while their eyes showed no signs of life.

"Creepy fuckers" Link jumped forward. His Arrows glowed as symbols appeared on each one. He fired a barrage of arrows that dug into the undead like they were butter. With the only attacks that had any effect was the arrows that hit their heads.

"I guess Hollywood got it right" Link shook his head as he aimed each arrow perfectly.

<Undead Goblin Killed>*5

<Undead Troll Killed>*2

<Undead Wolf Killed>*3

<5 600 Exp Has Been Granted>

Link claimed their corpses and asked Zero to look for Cores.

<I found 10 Cores, but they're mostly Advanced Level 2 ones>

"They were way stronger than Level 2 creatures, was it a bonus of being an undead?" Link asked.

<I believe so, yes>

Link consumed all the Cores, earning an easy '1 000 Permanent Mana Points'.

"Good, let's hunt"

****

Time flew by, Link was sitting on top of a huge boulder, underneath him were countless Undead Goblins and Human corpses.

<Lets collect these and go check over there>

Link has been hunting for a while now, the sun started to rise. The light shone on him, revealing the dark blood covering every part of his clothing. He looked at his Status screen one more time before moving again. He just got started.

Link Leveled Up a while back. Adding the Point he received to Agility, increasing his speed even further. Since his encounter with that fake bandit group, Link seemed like he has been paying too much attention to speed as he added his Skill Point to 'Air Boost'.

Link fought all kinds of Undead. From average turned beasts and humans to evolved Wraiths and Undead Knights. They had the power of Advanced Level 3 Creatures but they never succeeded in landing one hit on him. Link's speed was abnormal considering his Level, but at the same time he failed to take them down as well. Forcing him to retreat whenever an evolved Undead appeared.

<What are you going to do about them?>

"I can't injure them and neither can they injure me. I'm thinking of cleaning up all the average undead first and increasing my Mana and Level for now. Then we'll return and Level Up 'The Story of Genes'" Link said.

<Wait, really?>

"I need to hurry up and get stronger. Or i'll be killed if i run into people like them again"

****

It was Midday as Link was heading back to the City. He was looking at his Status Screen with a huge grin covering his face.

"I feel like this is deserving of a celebration" Link laughed.

<If we can keep this up, we'll rule this place in no time. We need to get the Materials for the Wolf Cub to Evolve as well>

When Link fed some of the Corpses to the Wolf Cub, a message appeared informing him of reaching the limits. But when he attempted to let it evolve, another message appeared.

<Evolution Materials Needed: Advanced Mana Crystal (1)>
