Rationalist: Reborn or Retarded?

The first six chapters are about MCs past life. It can avoided as it wouldn't have any effect at the beginning of the story. ---- In a room that is dimly lit not by an electric bulb but by an esoteric object. An infant about 6 months old lying in a cradle. Just by looking at him one could see clear traces of confusion in his face. 'What is this?...' He couldn't understand, as his memories are fuzzy, yet he realizes he knows things that he shouldn't know, things that didn't make sense, thinking in a language that he didn't even know the name of. In a magical world filled with esoteric flora and fauna where Magus, Weapon wielders and Martial artists reign, it's the story of a boy, Jayce, growing up trying to find a balance between his emotions and hyper-rational thinking he obtained from the 'knowledge' and 'awareness' he inherited as an infant, which forces him to analyze and decide everything in an overly rational manner.

Energy Source

After that conversation with Clara, Mage Lia went back to her abode and began contemplating what kind of syllabus and teaching method she should be following to teach Jayce.

Soon, after contemplating and mentally arguing many ideas with herself, she finally decided to go on with a strict schedule where she would patch up his shortcomings for the next six months.

In this period of time, all the things Jayce has learned so far will be reviewed by her and Lia will explain things in an even more detailed and elaborated manner to make sure he has in-depth knowledge of those subjects.

There were also several new things she taught him, including the political scenario of this world, flora and fauna and taboos. Although she did not delve deep into them.

In those six months, Jayce had consolidated the things he learned and built a sturdy foundation which was not any less than a child from graded families would have learned in the time period of half a decade. In fact, it's sturdier.

-----

Time soon passed as those six months came to an end.

Roderick mansion

A boy around 6 years old with shiny black hair and gray eyes is sitting in front of the only banyan tree in that garden. He seemed to be very impatient as he looked around every few seconds as if he was waiting for someone. It's without a doubt, Jayce.

Mage Lia was standing afar looking at him with a face that seemed to have a smile yet not. With today, Jayce's general studies classes are getting over.

"Good morning, Jayce!"

Mage Lia didn't look for long and went to greet him with her usual smile, to which Jayce promptly replied.

"Good morning, Teacher!"

"So, you seem very excited. Are you that happy that this class is going to end?"

"No, no, nothing of that sort.."

"Oh, then if it's not about the class, is it about me? Are you looking forward to it because hereafter you will no longer need to see me?"

Mage Lia pretended to have been emotionally hurt. If it was any other child they would've defended themselves desperately, but Jayce just stood there with his smile, not faltering in the least.

"Tch, atleast pretend... Sigh"

"Teacher, you and I both know why I'm so excited. You're the one who leaked it, then what's the need?"

Actually, Jayce actually did exactly what a child would do in the beginning of their classes, but after being with Mage Lia for all this time, he eventually found out that she's just toying with him. So, he stopped and got used to it.

For Mage Lia, it doesn't matter. After all, it was also a part of training in her mind. She will actually corner Jayce once in a while in the battle of wits, by using all sorts of underhanded methods.

It may seem like bullying. Well, she was bullying. But, according to her, it's a part of her training schema. It is to let Jayce see all sorts of levels that people would stoop from cornering him because of mispronounced or misplaced words to using emotional blackmail to target him.

And it really worked well in Jayce's case. Although not all, he was able to see through more and more of her farce, just like now.

But unaware to both of them, it's affecting Jayce's character at its core, which was already a message torn between his rationality and emotions. This training leads to an increase in wariness which strengthened his already dominant rational side of his mind, because it's very minute they aren't able to see as of now.

"Fine, let's start then, shall we?"

Mage Lia announced. Jayce was already beyond excited at this point.

"From today to untill when I decide it is the end, you'll be learning all about magic. Let me iterate it again. It'll be difficult, and I'll not accept any early withdrawal. You have not awakened yet, so think this through!"

Mage Lia warned with a hint of intimidation in her tone, but Jayce wasn't the least bit faltered as he answered.

"Mage Lia, I'm a FIGHTER and not a QUITTER!!!"

Mage Lia stared at him for a solid second before nodding her head in acknowledgment. But, something seemed off to her, so she asked,

"Did you prepare that sentence beforehand?"

"NO!"

Jayce's answer was firm, as if what he said was the absolute, undeniable truth. Mage Lia didn't bother much as she started her lesson.

"The syllabus will be like this. First, we will see about the energy source, then move into magic and finally, the expressions and formulas for the magical runes. Got it?"

Jayce nodded his head in acknowledgment.

From the time he had learned, he had constantly compared the math of this world with the math that's in the knowledge in his mind. Although the math here cannot compare in terms of complexity to that in his knowledge. They are more effective and efficient.

In fact, there are several more factors that are always taken into consideration when calculating something. For example, there are factors involved such as energy resistance or friction, energy absorption or attraction.

They are involved even in ordinary calculations.

Magic components are created by using runes which determine the path the mana was supposed to flow. The expressions present in the runes are what determines the path and the corresponding effect it should have.

As simple as it may sound, it's the difficult part. A simple '.0' error will cause a difference between good and crap level equipment. And it's only for some basic equipment; for higher ones, the consequences will be a lot terrible.

'Finally, I get to learn about these. Wonder how magic really works here!'

'Is it just like in those memories? Is it stored somewhere in our body or like a blessing from some god?'

'Then, do gods exist here?'

A lot of thoughts were also going through Jayce's mind, as he was waiting for Mage Lia to continue on with the topic.
