Rationalist: Reborn or Retarded?

The first six chapters are about MCs past life. It can avoided as it wouldn't have any effect at the beginning of the story. ---- In a room that is dimly lit not by an electric bulb but by an esoteric object. An infant about 6 months old lying in a cradle. Just by looking at him one could see clear traces of confusion in his face. 'What is this?...' He couldn't understand, as his memories are fuzzy, yet he realizes he knows things that he shouldn't know, things that didn't make sense, thinking in a language that he didn't even know the name of. In a magical world filled with esoteric flora and fauna where Magus, Weapon wielders and Martial artists reign, it's the story of a boy, Jayce, growing up trying to find a balance between his emotions and hyper-rational thinking he obtained from the 'knowledge' and 'awareness' he inherited as an infant, which forces him to analyze and decide everything in an overly rational manner.

Roderick mansion.

A woman seemingly at the age of 45 to 50 wearing a white robe which was adorned with various gems. She was wearing an aviator-shaped, golden framed spectacle which was sitting in the middle of her nose bridge.

She had gray hair which she didn't mind dyeing. A round face with golden colored pupils. It's Mage Lia who was supposed to teach Jayce. She was walking in the corridor that led to the central garden of the Roderick mansion.

Normally, tutors who teach general studies are mostly scholars. Only these graded families use mage for such a purpose. It's also an effort from their side to subtly influence the kids.

She reached the garden, under a banyan tree which had hundreds of prop roots hanging around. She just created a stone chair and waited for Jayce to arrive.

A few minutes passed and Jayce, who had been at a distance and gawking at Lia since she got there, started moving towards his 'classroom'.

"Why were you just staring at me from afar instead of coming to greet me as soon I arrived?"

Looking at the incoming Jayce, Lia asked curiously.

"It was just... no reason"

Jayce jumped at the question but didn't give a proper answer.

Lia narrowed her eyes and tilted her head but did not continue.

"As you must've heard. I'm Mage Lia. I'm going to be your tutor for general studies for the next few years. And also will be teaching you magic INCASE you choose to be a magician. Nice to meet you, Jayce Roderick, the candidate."

Jayce felt uneasy being called as a candidate, but he replied politely with a slight bow.

"Nice to meet you too, Mage Lia."

"I heard that you are already well versed in language and even in basic math and history. So let me just check a little. If it's satisfactory, we will proceed accordingly. How does it sound?"

"Right"

Mage Lia couldn't understand the reply. She was expecting him to give a reply, something like children his age would, but he replied like an army man replying to his commander, so she asked again.

"Okay?"

"Mm"

This time he just made a sound of acknowledgment as he nodded his head.

She blinked twice and looked at Jayce, who didn't seem to have any intention of continuing. So, she just started with her questions.

After around half an hour of questioning, Lia finally gave Jayce a break.

"It's enough for today. Go have some rest and we'll continue tomorrow."

"Thank you, teacher. Bye bye"

Lia just smiled and waved her hand towards Jayce who was waving her towards her as he was going back to his place.

The smile on Lia's face didn't vanish, but her eyes radiated a serious and sharp feeling. Her inner thoughts were having a battle because of her findings.

'Such intelligence...'

'It's fine if it's just one field but to be this knowledgeable in all these various subjects at this age... '

Jayce didn't hold back on answering her questions this time. Since, it's already decided he has to be in the limelight anyway. But for Lia, it was a major shock. After all, a five-year-old answering equations weren't something she had even heard of.

She started with the basics, but looking at how comfortably he was answering, she started increasing the difficulty.

In Language, Math and Geography, his knowledge is already equal or beyond that of someone who has studied for all five years of general studies.

Jayce, after showing that he was able to speak and read fluently at the age of one and a half, was given a lot of books, but mostly children's stories or drawing ones. After the age of two, he nagged his parents to give him more books, which eventually allowed him to get a pass to the library.

Although he couldn't read anything regarding the political situation or power system in the world. He became proficient in basic studies of this world. In fact, when he was studying, he actually even thought of ways to improve them by using the 'knowledge' in his mind. Even though this world's scientific studies are lacking, it took a different approach with magic. The basics are still the same.

It's clear that unless he wants to take the path of scholar, he can just start training. But alas, he can't, since his age is just too far away from the average age of awakening.

"So, how is he? Unbelievable, right?"

While Lia was in her thoughts, Clara's voice resounded in her mind. Lia didn't answer for a while. She took her time and then asked,

"Are you sure that it's not soul possession or something of that sort?"

"Sigh..."

As if already expecting this, Clara sighed at her question as she went on.

"If it's like that, how could it not have been found out by us? His soul is clear, no trace of possession or damage, it's just..."

"Just?"

"Just stronger than it was supposed to be."

"Maybe a Transcendent reborn?"

Lia asked immediately.

"No, if that's the case, how could the other transcendents not take any action? Our family head just said it's a very rare natural phenomenon that happens once every few thousand years."

"Are you saying that he is a genius that only appears once in a few thousand years?"

Lia cried out in her mind.

"Hahaha, so again, what do you think of him?"

"He's... difficult."

Lia thought and said that before continuing her reasoning.

"He's difficult to understand. The way he spoke to me, it's as if he respects me and disrespects me at the same time."

"The way he listens is and do things, as if his mind is here and not here at the same time."

"His demeanor, as if he's a child and not a child at the same time!"

After reaching this far in the conversation, both voices become silent.

"So?..."

Clara asked.

"So, I think it will be interesting to see him becoming a mage."

"What if he didn't choose to be one?"

"He will !"

With that, Lia cut off her connection. Clara raised her eyebrows at her action, but she didn't seem to be surprised.

Mage Lia is a magician that is from the previous generation of Clara. It may not look like it, but she's well over 300 in terms of age. A Grandmaster ranked individual.

'Anyway, it's good that she chose to raise him as a magician, otherwise it would've been a real pity..'

Clara always felt Jayce could be a wonderful magician. It's just her instinct, nothing more. But hearing from a figure like Lia, it made her relieved. Rodericks are still known for their magic, after all.
