Yunfeng left the huge mansion by eight PM, followed by his entourage of three bodyguards, as usual. The jovial mood he had inside had long disappeared. His mind was in a fog as he watched the car drive through busy markets.
He silently rolled down the window and placed his head on the side, relishing the sight.
"Soon all of this is going to be destroyed… replaced by the stench of death."
It was unimaginable.
With a sigh, he closed his eyes. "I… why can't I do anything? I was given the knowledge but not the strength to change any of this. This sucks…" He sat up straight. "Um… mister driver, can you drop me off here?"
The car slowed down. The driver glanced back at him doubtfully. "Young man, our orders were to drop you off at home safe and secure. We can't go against that."
"But I want to do something here. It's okay. No one is trying to harm me in any way possible, so I will be very safe." Without waiting for the driver's answer, he quickly opened the door and walked out.
The bodyguards looked like they would follow behind him.
He quickly closed the door behind him. "I relieve you guys of your duty. Please go back home. I… I just want to spend some time alone. Please."
The huge hulking men sighed and nodded.
The car slowly rolled away into the busy road.
He stood there, watching the cars and people pass by with a glum look on his face.
"So many people are going to die…. Should I maybe send out a warning… maybe it can save them?"
His knowledge about the war was not complete, but his best friend Jai had once done a project on the Great War. He had peeked at it while he was bored.
There was a rumor that a few people in the main cities escaped the initial spread of the airborne terror virus using gas masks and by using multiple layers of wet cloth. It was just a hypothesis, as this history had happened long ago, and survivors likely did not leave much clue about how they survived.
But this small info might be true.
If this was spread to the masses, maybe a few more would survive the initial spread.
The initial bombing was the worst, after all. It took out almost fifty percent of their country's population. Later on, the virus spread so rapidly that their country almost went extinct.
Yunfeng massaged his aching brows. "Okay… I can try to send out info to people that there is going to be a war. But will they even believe it? Will they prepare for it?" He slowly walked down the road.
Scents of baked pies and roasted meat floated over to him, making his almost empty stomach growl. He had only eaten snacks at Jai's place. Even though he had invited him to dinner, he refused because he wanted to spend some time alone to think.
Yunfeng sat down at a small roadside stall selling roasted meat.
Instantly, a waiter came to him. "Oh, handsome boy, do you want roasted chicken tenders? It's fresh off the grill. We also have glass noodles for today."
"I'll have them both," Yunfeng whispered with a small smile. But the table next to him caught his eye. "Wait… I'll have that instead of the noodles?"
The waiter gazed at the extra table to see them with a huge bottle of rice wine. "Boy, you look awfully young to have that."
"I'm eighteen, studying for my college entrance exams…" he said softly.
The man scratched his head and nodded. "Fine. But you better not be lying."
Soon his table was filled with a huge bottle of rice wine, a bowl, and a plate of chicken skewers. After serving him, the servant left him alone to deal with the other customers.
Yunfeng took the skewers and bit into it. The delicious chicken almost melted in his mouth. It was mildly spicy, though, making his eyes water. He quickly poured a bowl of wine and gulped it down. The sour flavor really went well with the spicy skewers. "This is so good… I'll miss it… I'll miss it all…" Tears started to stream down his face.
Wiping them away hastily, he continued to gulp down the wine. "Mister, another bottle!"
