Do you still not understand?

Suleiman poured a glass of water and gave it to Avery before sitting across her. He was telling her everything that had happened recently in her absence.

''They dropped the charges against me? Why?'' Avery asked.

''I too don't know the details. Detective Gid was getting ready to get an arrest warrant and come for you in the hospital when the Chief suddenly received a call from the higher ups that they should drop all the charges against you and conclude it with a disciplinary punishment.''

''That is strange. I'm sure I was going to get charged with attempted murder because my fingerprints were on the dagger. How did all of those charges get dropped at once?'' Avery furrowed her brows, thinking deeply.

''Senior, I heard a rumor that they are trying to transfer you to the Civil Affairs Division, but the team leader doesn't want to accept it. I heard that it is either a transfer to the countryside or to the district traffic management team.''

''Constable Sanchez won't agree to it? Why?''

''Yes, I guess you must have left a deep impression on her…'' Suleiman took the glass from Avery and placed it on the table.

''Avery…'' Mariah chuckled. 'I think you are mistaken about something. I am not interested in Prosecutor Oak. I am not even into men.''

''Then… are you interested in me?'' Avery asked wearily.

''And if I say yes?'' Mariah chuckled. ''Don't worry, Avery. I am going to have this one sided crush on you.''

….

''Senior, senior, are you alright?'' Suleiman asked and Avery came back to her senses. She shook the thoughts of what Mariah told her at the bar away.

Avery sighed and clenched her hands. ''I want to go to the Civil Affairs Division.'' She muttered.

''Huh? You want to be transferred to the countryside, senior didn't you say you hated the Civil Affairs Division?'' Suleiman asked.

''Nothing! I'm tired.'' Avery said.

''Oh, I will leave you to rest. I heard you will be discharged tomorrow. Will you be staying at Prosecutor Oak's house?'' Suleiman asked.

''What do you mean? Why would I go and stay at Prosecutor Oak's house?'' Avery asked back.

Suleiman bit his lips and cussed. He was not supposed to let Avery know.

''Suleiman, tell me what is going on…'' Avery said.

''Senior, I suddenly remember that I had work to do at the station. I will go right now.'' Suleiman rushed to the door and Kai opened and walked in.

''Prosecutor Oak is here, he will explain everything to you.'' Suleiman said and turned to Kai. ''I… I accidentally told her about what happened.'' Suleiman said to Kai and ran out of the ward.

Kai closed the door and walked towards her. His gaze was calm and he didn't seem to be in any dilemma.

''Suleiman just said something right now. Care to explain?'' Avery asked.

A while later…

''What?'' Avery laughed and shook her head. ''You are joking with me, right?''

Kai looked at Avery and asked. ''Do I look like I am joking? As I said, the situation demanded a quick solution and that was the only way.''

''The only way? What kind of bullshit is this, Prosecutor Oak? Don't you hate me? You hate me. You said I am the perfect example of the kind of women you hate. So, why would you? Do you know that Adonis isn't one to mess with? If he finds out that you lied to him, he won't let you off.''

''Let me make this clear, you and I had a deal and I was trying to protect it. Would have rather your family taken you away instead? Or would you have preferred Detective Sanchez tell your brother that she is your girlfriend? I understand all of this is flustering because you just woke up but can you at least hear my reasons out first?''

''Your reasons are not the point, Prosecutor Oak. The point is that you just claimed to be in a relationship with a woman you hate. Even if you didn't lie to Adonis, he wouldn't have taken me anywhere because he knows I will not let him off. Do you still not understand?'' Avery looked at Kai.

''I don't understand. Are you saying that I was being played?''

''Absolutely. Adonis has being trying to pair me up with any man that is close to me. He must have looked into you and found out that you are the one who saved me and decided to play a fast one on you. He knows I hate being in a relationship. He knows I have never being in a relationship but he still played along just to get you to sign that paper. Now you and I are bound together by law.''

''I see.''

''Prosecutor Oak, I thought you were smart? How could you let a fool like Adonis trick you?'' Avery asked and sat down.

Kai sighed. There was a long pause before he spoke again. 'I don't hate you, at least not as before.''

''You don't hate me? Why? What has changed?'' Avery asked.

''We are partners in this, right? I've gotten to know a little about you so, I realized I was mistaken about you.''

''No! You were not mistaken, Prosecutor Oak. Everything you said about me is true. I am someone who is only focused on the money. Then and even now. I can betray even my own family for money. You've seen the things I can do for money and power. I don't know what you've heard about me but I hope you don't think that I am a good person and put your trust in me. You will be disappointed. Greatly!'' Avery said with a complicated gaze.

She bit her lips and walked to the window.

''Woww! You sound so heartless right now, Avery. Did you have to be so cruel with your words?'' Fiona asked.

''I think you are mistaken about something, Detective Sandas. I am not interested in you, and won't ever be. We were just unfortunately tangled in a sticky situation together and I thought we could work together but I guess that was just my wishful thoughts.''

Kai chuckled. ''You are right! You are someone who is only focused on money, which makes me different. Now that Fiona is in a vegetative stage, our work together is over. I shouldn't be a reason why I should be here. Why did I even bother myself staying here until you were awake? I should have just left you and went about my business.'' Kai took his suit coat and walked out of the ward.

Avery turned and looked at the door after he left.

''Why did you do that? Are you really not going after him?'' Fiona asked.

''Why should I go after him?'' Avery asked as she watched Kai from the tinted glass window.

''What is your reason for being so cruel to the man who saved you and made sure you didn't go to prison?''

''Don't you get it?'' Avery turned and looked at Fiona with an angry expression.

''No, I don't. Please enlighten me.''

''Because of you… it is because of you. I can't let him be next to me because of you.'' Avery yelled at Fiona.

''What?'' Fiona looked confused.

''I am the only one who can see you. Do you know how crazy I would look when he catches me talking to myself? You saw what happened earlier on. He almost sent me to see the psychiatrist because he thought he was crazy.''

''Not just that, the money. Do you think the Prime Minister would let me off? Prosecutor Oak is a righteous prosecutor who doesn't have a single dirt to his name. His connection to me will make people lose trust in him. If something happens to me, his position as a prosecutor would be jeopardized. Who am I to make him go through all that for me?'' Avery asked.

''Well…''

''Lastly, I have a feeling that my life is about to get even more chaotic than ever because of you.''

Fiona smirked. ''How did you know that?'' She asked.

''Because, you are a total nutcase. I might be crazy but you… you are on another level.''

''Well, at least you are right away that. I have at most three months left. In those three months, your body is going to be mine for a while.''

''Use me all you want for the next two months but promise me something, in those three months you will leave Prosecutor Oak out of it. I want to investigate the orphanage arson case alone. My sister, you know the person who killed her, right? Just keep your promise and tell me who the killer is.''

''We have a deal. But I think I need to tell you this.''

''What is it?''

''Prosecutor Oak was the one who made the police to drop the charges against you. He didn't want you to know but I thought you should know about this. Also, I think he might have made a deal with someone because of that. He would soon become the deputy district Prosecutor for Hans Island District. While you were unconscious, he has taken care of you and made sure that you didn't get a harsh punishment. He also protected you from the Prime Minister when he came here.'' Fiona said.
