It was Esme's last time moving into the house, and the presence of one more person didn't have a significant impact. Everyone had built their mental barriers against her tricks, and the only real issue was the laboratory, which was off-limits to her thanks to the presence of Viper.
Late at night, Max sat on the edge of the bed, pondering the potential future. He knew he had to prevent it from reaching a point of no return before he could even consider opening the door to a parallel universe. The Sentinel plan needed to be stopped.
Destroying the Sentinel plan was the first step. Even if other plans emerged after, at least the situation wouldn't become irreversible. Max considered reaching out to the X-Men, hoping their involvement would shake up the government and change the current dynamic. If the Sentinel plan couldn't be stopped, Max was prepared to persuade or eliminate Professor X and the others if necessary.
The risks of reversing the future were immense. If the reversal happened like in the movies, Max couldn't be sure if he would still exist afterward. He didn't want to return to the original world as an ordinary mercenary after experiencing so much in this one.
The night passed without words.
....
The Next Morning
"I'm heading out," Max announced abruptly, his tone carrying a sense of restlessness.
"Take care of yourself," Viper cautioned solemnly.
Max couldn't discern if Viper was being sarcastic, shooting Viper a glare before retorting, "I'm heading to the underground base."
"Sonia or Lorna?" Viper inquired.
"Sage!" Max replied tersely, rising from his seat to leave.
"Mind if I join you?" Esme piped up.
"Maybe next time," Max responded casually, declining her offer without much thought.
Esme nodded understandingly, choosing not to press the matter further.
Opting not to drive, Max entered his dimensional space and took to the skies, swiftly making his way to the underground organization.
His purpose? To seek out the Sage.
After making a quick call to Lorna and Sonia for updates, Max proceeded to locate the Sage. While John and Lorna handled most operations, Sonia managed the base's logistics, and Eclipse handled materials and missions, the Sage played a pivotal role in the organization's technical support. Without the Sage's expertise, the organization would struggle to navigate the complexities of mutant affairs, risking its very existence.
"Are you available?" Max inquired upon finding the Sage.
The sage in the chair turned around, displaying a hint of surprise. Sonia had a close relationship with both Rona and Max. "Is there anything I can do to help?" he asked.
Max nodded, "Can you locate Kitty or Iceman?"
Unexpectedly, Sage questioned, "Is there a specific reason you need to find them?"
Max nodded but remained silent. After contemplating for a moment, the sage offered, "There's no specific contact information, but when they left last time, Kitty mentioned they might go to Florida, and Iceman said they were heading to Texas."
"Thanks!"
Even without precise contact details, it was a starting point. Max could first locate Kitty and then connect with Professor X through her. They could jointly address the Sentinel Project. Moreover, since Max had saved Kitty before, if needed, it would be more convenient to coordinate their efforts.
"Are you planning to find them? What's going on?" Lorna inquired.
"Just preparing for the future," Max replied with a smile, turning to find Lorna.
"I intend to go to Florida to find Kitty. If anything happens during this time, you can reach out to Blink and the others," Max informed Lorna.
Lorna was taken aback, questioning, "Why are you suddenly going to find Kitty?"
"I have my reasons."
"Then let Sonia accompany you," Lorna suggested.
Max shook his head, "No need Esme will go with me."
"Just the two of you?"
"Yes."
Lorna looked at Max and suddenly declared, "If you don't bring Sonia, I'm going with you!"
"We had planned to contact Mutant underground organizations in other states for a while. This is the perfect opportunity to establish connections with them since we aren't very busy at the moment."
"Really?"
"Absolutely."
"Then inform the others, get ready, and then come with me," Lorna insisted.
Max wouldn't refuse Lorna's determination. Lorna nodded, left to inform others, and soon returned with a black backpack.
"Alright, let's go," Lorna said calmly.
