Chapter 26: Joe

He took another drink of his coffee and tossed the rest out. He packed up his things, then set out to begin to explore the lake's shores. He walked along the beach, stopping frequently to look at how the woods had pushed closer to the shores, leaving very little room to walk in some areas. He snapped several more photos as he went, thinking to himself that he might not even print his pictures for fear that others could see this place's beauty and somehow ruin it. Joe knew this place wouldn't be a secret forever, but he wanted it to last as long as it could.

He walked for a while longer, occasionally glancing at his watch, and then finally stopped and knelt at the water's edge near a large tree that had fallen. Part of the tree extended out into the lake. He stood up from where knelt and walked over to it. He pushed on it with his foot, checking to see how sturdy it was. When it didn't move, he carefully stepped up onto it and began easing out over the water.
