Chapter 27: Joe

When Joe got back to his truck, it was about six o'clock. His walk had tired him out, but he felt refreshed, at least emotionally. He was still scared of what the future held for him, especially where Elizabeth was concerned, but he had decided he had to try.

Joe pulled his truck up at the house and found his father still out on the porch, but this time he had company. He parked the truck near the barn and walked up to find Elizabeth sitting on the porch, drinking a glass of sweet tea. Elizabeth waved to Joe as he walked up the steps.

"'Hi," she said as she grinned.

Henry looked to his son. "What took you so long? We were starting to get worried."

Joe didn't respond to his father; he just smiled and looked to Elizabeth. "How are you this evening?"

Elizabeth grinned. "Fine, I think."

She stared at him for a moment and then looked to Henry. "We've been here catching up."

Joe laughed. "I hope Dad didn't bore you too much."
