How to re-write the Evil Stepmother

As she walked back to her room, her mind raced. "Oh no. I'm inside a novel. This novel," she thought, panic bubbling beneath her composed exterior. She was living in the world of the book she had been so engrossed in, reincarnated as the character everyone loved to hate. Determined to survive and rewrite her fate, Amelia resolved to navigate this treacherous new world with care. She would use her knowledge of the novel to her advantage, starting with maintaining her new persona as the overly friendly, reformed stepmother. And perhaps, just perhaps, she might even find a way to win the cold duke's heart.

Chapter Thirty-Eight - The Hunting Competition

Amelia's heart raced with worry as she watched Alister prepare to venture into the forest for the hunting competition. She stood by his side, her fingers entwined with his as she voiced her concerns.

Amelia watched Alister with a furrowed brow as he prepared for the hunting competition. "Are you sure you'll be alright out there?"

Alister flashed her a reassuring smile. "Of course, my dear. I've been hunting since I was a boy. Nothing to worry about."

"But what if something goes wrong?" Amelia's voice was laced with concern.

Alister chuckled, placing a gentle kiss on her forehead. "I promise I'll be back before you know it, with a prize worthy of your admiration."

"He's going to win for sure," one of them remarked confidently.

"He's certainly skilled," Amelia replied, her gaze fixed on the path Alister had disappeared down.

"Please be careful, Alister," she pleaded, her voice tinged with anxiety. "I don't want anything to happen to you."

Alister smiled reassuringly, his eyes warm with affection as he cupped her cheek in his hand. "I'll be fine, my love," he assured her, his voice steady and confident. "I'm a skilled hunter, remember? Nothing can harm me."

Amelia's heart swelled with love and gratitude at his words, her fears momentarily assuaged by his unwavering confidence. She leaned forward, pressing a gentle kiss to his lips as she whispered her love for him.

As Alister set off into the forest, Amelia's thoughts turned to the other contestants gathered at the base camp.

Amelia joined the group of noble ladies gathered at the base camp, their voices a buzz of excitement as they awaited the return of the hunters.

"I heard the crown prince has quite the reputation as a hunter," Lady Catherine remarked, her gaze flicking towards the forest.

Amelia nodded, a small smile playing on her lips. "Yes, but my husband is no novice when it comes to the hunt. He's skilled beyond measure."

Lady Eleanor raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Is that so? I find that hard to believe."

Amelia's chin lifted defiantly. "Believe what you will, but Alister has been hunting since he was a boy. He knows these woods like the back of his hand."

Lady Beatrice chimed in, her tone dripping with sarcasm. "Well, we shall see, won't we? Actions speak louder than words, after all."

Amelia's cheeks flushed with indignation. "Indeed, they do. And mark my words, when Alister returns with his prize, you'll all see just how skilled he truly is."

The ladies exchanged skeptical glances. All eyes turned towards the forest, anticipation building as they waited for the hunters to return.

Meanwhile, Alister trudged through the dense undergrowth of the forest, his senses keen as he searched for signs of his quarry. He paused as he caught sight of the handkerchief tucked into his belt, the intricate embroidery catching the dappled sunlight filtering through the trees.

A smile tugged at the corners of his lips as he studied the delicate pattern, his imagination conjuring images of fierce dragons and mythical creatures. Determined to prove himself worthy of Amelia's affection, he resolved to hunt down the most formidable prey he could find.

As he ascended a steep mountain path, he spotted a shadowy figure lurking amidst the dense foliage. With a silent prayer to the gods for strength and courage, he drew his sword and advanced, his heart pounding with adrenaline as he prepared for battle.

The ensuing fight was fierce and brutal, with the dragon lashing out with razor-sharp claws and searing breath. Alister fought with all his might, his muscles straining with the effort as he dodged and parried the creature's attacks.

At last, with a final, desperate blow, he plunged his sword into the dragon's heart, the beast collapsing to the ground with a deafening roar. Alister stood victorious amidst the wreckage, his chest heaving with exertion as he surveyed the scene before him.

But his victory was short-lived, for as he emerged from the forest with his prize in tow - it looked to only be a rabbit.

As Alister emerged from the forest, his steps heavy with exhaustion, the other contestants gathered around him, their expressions a mix of disbelief and amusement.

"Is that it?" one of them jeered, his tone laced with mockery. "I was expecting something a bit more... impressive."

A ripple of laughter echoed through the group, their voices mingling with the rustle of leaves and the distant calls of birds.

"I thought you were supposed to be a skilled hunter," another contestant taunted, a smirk playing on his lips. "Looks like you couldn't even catch a rabbit."

Alister's had no problem to maintain his composure in the face of their scorn.

"It's not just any rabbit," he protested, his voice tinged with amusement. "It's a... a rare breed, I assure you."

But his words fell on deaf ears, drowned out by the raucous laughter of his fellow contestants.

Ignoring their taunts, he knelt before Amelia, his eyes shining with pride as he presented her with the head of the dragon.

Gasps of astonishment filled the air as the other contestants realized the magnitude of Alister's achievement. Some of them whispered in awe, while others scowled in envy. But amidst the commotion, Amelia's eyes shone with pride and admiration for her brave and noble husband.

With a triumphant smile, Amelia accepted the crown that had been promised to the winner of the hunting competition, her heart swelling with pride for her beloved Alister. As she stood before the cheering crowd, the sound of their applause echoing in her ears, she knew that no matter what challenges lay ahead, they would face them together, united in love and strength.
