Hero Story: You Are Special

Imagine a world where magic is real and some possess unique abilities that defy reason. But what happens when you lack both? In a world where being special is common and normal is strange. Asher Himmel is a young boy who lives only with his grandfather, in a seedy neighborhood along with other people that society has turned its back on him for having mediocre or non-existent skills. One day, while cleaning, Asher finds his grandfather's comic book collection and decides to read it out of boredom, not knowing that this would inspire him with the nobility and moral dilemmas of those subjects called 'heroes'. But that would not be the only thing that would change in the young man, as he would be visited by a being of indescribable appearance, which gives him a chance to become a 'hero'. This is the story of a young Argonaut whose ordinary dreams are transformed into something extraordinary, challenging the very notion of what it means to be a hero.

Chapter 12: Superhuman

Asher Himmel

October 30, 2010

Eugenio Himmel's house

My eyes hurt a lot. I cried a lot yesterday. I was still a little depressed, but I found the strength to get out of bed. Suddenly the doorbell started ringing. I quickly put on my clothes to see who was ringing.

At the door two men dressed in the same type of suit as Grigory handed me a black briefcase, and left without a word. From their attitude, I could guess they were agents of the Superhuman Registration Office, so I went back inside my house, and sat down on the couch to open the briefcase.

Inside I found two letters and a rectangular box. The first letter was a recommendation for the upcoming enrollment in the Superhuman Training Institute, which will be held in a year's time. It would be interesting to sign up to learn more about this society since the information on the internet is very limited.

The second letter was the surprise. I was given a single residence in the capital of Eternity, which made me feel strange since I took this test to be able to move with my grandfather to the Capital, not to live alone. I didn't give it much thought and checked the rectangular box.

Inside the rectangular box were two things. A blue crystal with rather strange engravings and a license.

After seeing the license, a call came in on the house phone. It was my grandfather.

{Hello Asher. Sorry I haven't called you for so long}.

{Good morning Grandpa. Don't worry, I got my superhuman license. With this, we'll be able to move to the capital city}

{About that... I'm not going}

{How?}

{I'm too old to live in the big city, plus it would take up too much of your time that you can use for other things. I want you to live a life you won't regret, and enjoy}

{You are my only family grandfather. I already led a very happy life with you. I don't want to abandon you. If you don't go, I can stay here with you no problem} I said in a sad tone.

{My boy, you need to know more of the world. Make friends and above all, learn to live in society. I already had my moment and I was very happy, now it's your turn. When you are registered as a superhuman, you are given a residence and a consumable teleportation crystal. To use the latter, break the crystal with your hands, it will take you directly to the teleportation terminal in the Capital of Eternity, then follow the directions on the letters you were given}

{And what will you do grandfather?}

{I will return to our home on the Frontier. I will repair it and live out the rest of my days in peace. According to reports I saw, there are even new superhuman policemen in the city. I'll be fine}

{I love you very much Grandpa. I'm going to call you a lot and visit you whenever I can}

{I love you. You are the light that kept me alive these years and my most precious treasure} My grandfather said with great difficulty.

{When are you coming home?}

{Today night}

{Good. I'll make a feast to welcome you and celebrate today. You bring a cake}

{All right my grandson}

I hung up the call to throw myself on the couch. I was thinking about the many changes I am going through. Just yesterday I had some problems, and today I have new ones. Growing up is hard.

It took me 30 minutes to get up to start preparations for tonight's party. I cleaned the house, looked for supplies and prepared a lot of food. It was already dark when my grandfather knocked on the door, holding a chocolate cake in his hands. When he got ready to come in and put the cake on the table, I gave him a hug.

We then proceeded to have dinner together. We talked about many things. He told me more stories about adventures with his friends. He was smiling a lot as he talked.

-Grandpa, how did you feel when people forgot you? Didn't it make you feel sad to lose what you worked for for a long time?

- I lived a lot of adventures, and I helped many people. All those actions are still inside my heart, no matter that they were forgotten by others?

-I'm afraid of change.

-Fear of change is normal. The world changes, society changes and we adapt to that change. But you should not dwell on it, embracing change does not mean that you have to stop being the way you are or that you have to forget the past. You just live your life the way your heart feels happy," said my grandfather as he hugged me.

I may not have a chance to establish the same reputation as a hero that I have in this city in the Capital. Things may be tougher being superhuman. But I'm going to keep walking. I'm going to live being what I want to be, with no regrets or regrets.

Lactura Tyrannis

House

Capital, Eternity

I have not been able to sleep properly since that macabre gift from my father. I felt so sad thinking about the horrible end Thomas met because of my selfishness. I cried every time I thought of the thousands of times he helped me.

With much effort, I got out of bed to take a bath and change. Without even eating breakfast, I left my home and walked around the city. I entered a beauty salon.

-Greetings. How can we help you," said the stylist.

-I want to cut my hair until it is above my shoulders and apply a jet black dye.

-Miss, think again. You have beautiful, healthy red hair. Wouldn't it be better...?

-I've already said what I need. I don't need your opinion.

I wanted to cut off everything that connected me to that damn family, starting with this red hair.

-I understand," said the stylist.

Using a very precise cut with a specialized water spell, the stylist cut my hair down to my shoulder. Then she gave me three pills.

-Take one pill if you want to change your hair color to jet black for a few days. Two pills if you want a longer change maximum 2 years. Three pills if you want a permanent change. If you take three pills, you won't be able to apply a dye anymore while if you take one or two pills, you have to wait at least one year for a new dye," explained the stylist.

I immediately took all three pills. Almost instantly, my red hair turned black all over. On one hand I felt a little more at peace, but it was only the first step.

-Excuse me, how can I contact the Superhuman Registration Institute? It's just that I've been registered for a while but never received my license," I asked the stylist.

-They have a branch in this city dedicated to issuing Superhuman licenses. It's three corners away from this store.

I left a gold coin as payment for the information and the cut, and then went to the headquarters. In 5 minutes, I had the doors in front of me. Without much thought, I rang the bell and was given access.

-What can we do for you," said the receptionist.

- I'm here to get my superhuman license.

- Yes, of course. Give me your name.

-Lactura Tyrannis.

The receptionist began to tremble and quickly called a superior. There was no one who didn't recognize the last name Tyrannis.

In about two minutes, four superhumans escorted me to the top floor of the building, where the manager was standing waiting for me.

-A pleasure. I am the manager of this Superhuman Registration Office, Raul Castillo," said the man as he offered me a seat.

As I sat down, Raul put the license in front of me and stared at me waiting for me to read it.

One thing I noticed, is that my last name Tyrannis was not on the license. Instead, I could notice a surname Noir. There was only person capable of general enough influence to alter such intimate data.

-Your father... I mean the Patriarch of the Tyrannis family called our office yesterday to have the Tyrannis surname removed from your license, and changed to Noir. Sorry for the inconvenience.

I didn't mind that my last name was no longer Tyrannis, in fact I was glad I no longer had it. I was terrified of the name Noir. Noir is French for black, which means that bastard already knew he would change my hair color to black even before he made the decision. At that moment, the words I read in the letter he sent me resonated, "Sun Wukong cannot escape from the Buddha's palm.

No matter what I do, it seems I will never be able to escape his cursed influence no matter how far away I am. I hit the table with all my strength but only managed to break my right hand.

-I understand your frustration....

-No. You don't understand." I took the license with my left hand and left the office.

-At least let your right hand heal!

-No need," I interrupted the gentleman as I dismissed him with my healed right hand.

The bodies of the Tyrannis family members are programmed at the cellular level to use healing spells automatically when they are injured in any way. The process uses mana but the amount consumed is negligible compared to using the spell manually.

I left the headquarters, went back to my house, made myself something to eat and threw myself on my bed to cry out of frustration.

-Someday I'm going to be free," I screamed as I hugged my pillow.
