Engaging in all sorts of mundane activities, he waited for the corridors to get deserted, for that was the time he could work the best.
Every day, he chose a different ward to slowly heal the people because if he did in an instant, there were chances he could get caught. He had already drawn attention because of his surgery stunt, and he knew Caroline already doubted him to some extent.
After talking to and healing a couple of patients in the children's ward, he walked back towards the cardiology wing, but not knowing why he momentarily stopped in front of her ward. But her bed was empty.
'What is wrong with me?'
He muttered and paced towards his chamber. 'She must have left with him.'
Shrugging off all thoughts about her, he looked at his sin counter, and a smile etched on his face. He had achieved quite a decrease. Working at that rate, he knew he would soon become sinless. But when he opened the chamber door, he was shocked to see Caroline sitting on her chair.
"I thought you left!" He mumbled faintly, masking away his shock.
"I guess I slept a bit too long." She spoke as she unsuccessfully tried to pick up her bag and put her laptop inside.
"Let me do that." He quickly took the laptop and her bag and helped pack all her stuff.
"Thanks! I guess." She said with a friendly smile as he packed her jacket and charger.
"What are assistants for?" With a soft smile, he looked at her and asked, "Will Dr. Van come, or should I help you till the entrance? Your bag is sort of heavy."
"I am taking a cab, and no, thanks. My left hand is perfectly fine. Assistants are supposed to help with just office work and not this." And saying that, she almost snatched the bag from his hand---an irritated expression written all over her face.
Was Dr. Van's absence affecting her that much, he wondered but not wanting to sour her mood any further, he asked, "Can I at least drop you till the exit …"
"Then hold this," and she shoved her bag back into his hand before strutting out.
Some temper that this woman had!
As she came out of that main door, the chilly wind instantly hit her, lending her a shiver. The way she hugged her right arm with her left didn't go unnoticed by him. He quickly paced close to her, and picking up the jacket from her bag, he draped it around her shoulders from behind.
But when he turned to stand next to her, he could see her twitch and struggle with her hair. Although her hair was tied, the tie had loosened and the wind was blowing the stray hair on her face.
"May I?"
He asked before attempting to touch her hair, and she just turned around in response, without saying a word. Letting out a short breath of air, he pulled out her soft locks, which had been buried underneath the jacket. He took out the tie, carefully gathered her hair, and tied it again.
"Thanks!" She said and turned. The wind blew the hair he had missed, and not knowing why, he lifted his hands again and tucked that stray hair behind her ear that was playing with her face. He was very careful not to touch her, but the moment his fingers lightly touched her ear lobes, she shivered.
"Your hand is so cold, Morpheous!" She looked at him with doe eyes that made him forget why he was there at Seattle High.
"I am sorry!" he said and took a step back.
"Morpheous!"
"Yes?"
"Would you …" But her hesitation made her stop in between. "Nevermind."
"What? Tell me?" He asked, looking at her intently as she raised her hand for a cab.
"Erm ... Earlier, you said you wanted to drop me home."
"Oh! Yeah. I mean, I didn't know that Dr. Van was … I was way out of the line., Just forget what I ..."
Screech….
A cab halted right next to them.
"Where to miss?" asked the cab driver.
Picking up her bag, he silently walked towards the cab and placed her bag inside. Holding the door open, he waited for her to get in, but she stopped just before the door.
"Would you ... would you still want to drop me home?"
He didn't know what to say or how to answer, for the multitude of thoughts inside him was eating him up. Sensing his silence, her face fell, and she sat inside in silence before mumbling, "Nevermind!"
Closing the car door, he deliberated for a second, but then, opening the front door, he sat next to the driver. A moment later, lifting his eyes out of curiosity, he glanced at the rear mirror and saw her looking out of the window, but a smile was evident on her face.
He couldn't help but smile either.
They didn't talk much until they arrived at her place. As she struggled with her keys, Morpheous took them from her hand and opened the door for her.
"So, your grandfather hasn't returned?"
"He is coming back tomorrow."
"I see." He hesitated before going in, but then knowing how heavy her bag was; he went in. Placing her bag on the table, he asked, "Erm...Do you need help with anything else?"
"No, I guess."
"Then I better get …" But she interrupted him hastily. "Unless you would like to stay for some coffee?"
"I ...I don't like coffee."
"Would you have some juice then?" She asked. There was a weird restlessness in her eyes and her voice strangely insisting.
"Caroline!" He spoke softly this time, for he could no longer be mad with her. "I don't need anything. You should take good rest. Anyways it's getting quite late."
"Are you trying to avoid me? Scared that I would do something inappropriate? It's ironic because it's you who I should be avoiding. Shouldn't I?" Her words were suddenly terse. "I just wanted to apologize for my behavior that night. I wasn't myself. And I wanted to thank you for taking care of me. That's all. You can ... you know, leave."
Puzzled with her sudden change in demeanor, he decided to walk away, as he was in no mood to argue with her.
"Obviously you wouldn't want to waste your time with someone handicapped when you are crushing over someone young and sexy," she muttered under her breath as he was reaching for the door, but that didn't go unheard.
Clenching his fists, he turned towards her. Agony was clearly written in his eyes.
"Stop confusing me with your words Caroline. Just go to sleep!"
And he walked away again, leaving her perplexed.
