Chapter 23

“We’re here,” Mari finally said. “It looks like they built some scaffolding around Hakusanand have supports in place against the wall.”

“What are the supports made of?”

“Metal and wood.”

Good, she probably wouldn’t accidentally electrify the scaffolding.

“Here, there’s a ramp in front of you. Watch your step.”

Kaede inched forward and finally felt the edge of the ramp. She stepped up and moved forward, keeping to the middle. She could see a bit better now, but Mari kept up her steady monologue and occasional instructions until they reached their destination.

“We left the loading door of the machine open,” Mari said with a laugh. “Looks like someone was in here and cleaned up a bit on deck. I think you can turn your light off now.”

Kaede did and found her seat. Plugging herself in was easy; she’d done it so many times over the years, she could do it in her sleep.

“Can you plug in the back for me?”
