Forty Thieves

I was running away from them. My baby was crying in my arms as I tried to shush him. The biting cold was harsh my already thin frame. My baby’s lips started turning white. I glanced at how my baby boy stopped crying. I continued running until the town was far behind us and all I could see in front of us were just a field of thick snow. My baby’s lips turned blue. “Oh Lord, please don’t let anything happen to him,” I prayed to God and caught sight of an old church up the hill to the left of the snow-covered path. “Hang on there, baby, we are almost there,” I whispered to him. The falling snow was heavier as the minutes ticked by. Soon we were caught in a blizzard. With much difficulty we managed to reach the old church. My heart sank as I saw that it was a dilapidated and abandoned church. It only meant one thing, no warm fire to save my baby. I went inside anyway as that was the only shelter available for miles on end. There was no fire wood by the fire place. No blankets, no rugs or anything that I could use to warm us up. All my baby had was me. I cuddled him closer. I was losing my baby. “No, God! Lord if you can hear my prayer I am at your House right now please let my baby live! You can take my live, please let my baby live!!! Please Lord I beg you,” I kept repeating my prayer believing if I prayer hard enough God will really grant my wish and let me trade my life for my baby’s life. I did not know how long I prayed. When I finally checked on my son he was cold and dead. God did not help us. My prayers went unanswered. I wished the Earth would just open up and swallow me up as I lost the will to live on. I had lost my son, what else was there for me to live for? My last thoughts before I lost consciousness was, “God failed me.” ******************************** This incarnation: Theeya is the direct descendant of one of the original Forty Thieves. Important Person

"Who is this important person?" I had to shout out loud for my voice to be heard as the wind whooshed by us as we flew with such high speed I could not even keep my eyes open. Whoever portrayed it in the movies where the flying men and women could keep their eyes open and with facial expression so relaxed when flying against the wind are totally lying!!! I could barely keep my eyes open against the wind! A goggle would be nice, I thought. Instantly a pair of transparent goggles appeared on my head and covered my eyes, shielding it from the wind.

"Oh yeah, I have godly powers now. Thank you, Goddess Cassandra," I shrugged.

I wondered how I looked like right now, being suspended in midair with goggles over my eyes, did I look as glamorous as the superhero in the movies or just a pathetic ball of a victim inside a net just like the stork bringing the baby in the sack.

"Why can't I fly myself if I am powerful? Or is that not included in my list of powers?" I shouted to Zaccheus over the wind.

"Do you want to try to fly yourself? I just wanted to ease you into this lifetime," he shouted back.

"Yeah, can I try?" I nodded vigorously.

He started descending and we landed on top of a canopy of trees.

He extended a hand to me as I climbed out of the net.

"Now my goddess, how would you want to fly? With wings like an Angel or just by sheer mental power to levitate and soar high in the sky?" He winked.

"You mean I have a choice? Isn't there like a default way to fly? What did I do in this previous lifetime?" I asked.

"You just levitate and relaxed on the cloud that moved you everywhere you wished to go. You even had a favourite cloud that you named DoDo," he grinned.

"DoDo?" I must have shown a weird expression on my face as Zaccheus burst out laughing.

No sooner did I say DoDo and before I could even react to Zaccheus' laughing fit, I was literally whisked off my feet and was caught by surprise by DoDo.

I was flying!!!

Zaccheus caught up and smiled at me. My face must be still showing a look of shock and surprise and disbelief as he smiled even brighter at me as he reached out and touched my arm reassuringly.

"I can sit and fly at the same time. So this is DoDo? He's so fluffy and comfortable! Why didn't you tell me about him before this and subjected me to that net?" I looked at Zaccheus accusingly.

"The net wasn't too bad was it?" He grinned further.

Before I could reply, he shouted: "DoDo, to Vignasir!"

Our trajectory changed as our flight took off towards the setting sun.

"Where is this Vignasir?" I shouted.

"Where the important person is at," he shouted back.

As my flight was literally on auto pilot with DoDo providing me the most comfortable first class seating ever, I just sat back and marvelled at the beauty of the setting sun.

"It's beautiful, isn't it? We never fail to catch each sun set here." He interrupted my reverie.

"Yeah," I just replied dreamily.

"I miss you, Cassandra," he said.

I pretended I did not hear him as I continued sun gazing.

The sky burst into splashes of orange, yellow and red with a hint of purple and blue as it started to set. I sighed out in appreciation at the gorgeous sight in front of me. I felt like I died and went to heaven and back.

"But you are in heaven and technically your human body is dead, so yeah," I heard Zaccheus' voice inside my mind. I looked over and his smiling face confirmed my suspicion.

"So I can hear your thoughts and you can hear mine?" I thought and he nodded.

"Why did you let me shout so loud just now?! I nearly lost my voice!" I couldn't help but snapped at him. I shouted out so loudly my voice went hoarse.

"We are here!!! Brace on for landing!" He changed the topic as our altitude dropped.

As we landed on top of another mountain, the sun was just about to disappear from beyond the horizon. Zaccheus snapped his fingers and the stars started shining as the sky turned dark.

"Welcome back, Cassandra, we are truly home."

DoDo settled and allowed me to descend gracefully before he flew off. I felt like he was my horse that needed no steering.

I took a few steps towards the mist instinctively and found myself going East, totally ignoring Zaccheus.

I then came to a glade at a clearing beyond the mist and felt a pull to take a look at the water.

As I bent forward, I saw the most exquisite woman staring back at me. Goddess Cassandra. I was stunned. Even with the goggles I rocked the look. I quickly removed the goggles and it dissolved into thin air.

"You take my breath away each time I look at you, Cassandra," Zaccheus came to stand beside me as his reflection appeared beside mine.

I noticed that we looked very much alike in terms of our colors.

Are we related?

He nodded.

"It is normal for siblings to marry each other in the Godly world," he said.

"That is cringeworthy," I said.

"Who is this important person you want me to meet?" I pushed further.

"We shall see that person tomorrow at first daylight," he replied nonchalantly.
