Chapter eight

It wasn't until sunset that we arrived at the borders just as Joe had envisioned. As we pulled up at the border point, there were a group of people sitting in a small area shivering against the wind. Glancing at them, I perceived that they looked worried and uncertain, I was worried too.

I took steps up to the fourth floor to the labaratories where the tests had been carried out, the Lab technician and a medical doctor stood up immediately we walked in. They were all expecting me to take more time with them, unfortunately for them, I was eager to get over the issue at hand and rush back home to Ania.

Mylar offered, "Alpha Hunter, would you like me to offer you coffee, water or tea?"

"Tea is just fine." I said, she glanced at one of the men to get me the tea, I imagined the man felt embarrassed being sent by a woman because he sneered, I raised an eyebrow at him, and he scampered off to their small kitchen.

"What in Hunter's name is going on?" Mylar impatiently asked. "We run the tests on the group of people out there, the results could not ascertain whether they are Humans, Wolves or Vampires." The medical doctor reported while he handed us medical files. Everything was blank. He then proceeded to show us videos of how the tests were carried out, which was all invalid. "Where do these people come from?" I asked .

"Alpha, we have tried interrogating them but they have stayed mum." The doctor said.

"I don't understand why the tests are invalid, are we dealing with some other kind of beings or someone who understands our systems has compromised them?" There was a loud silence in the room as no one had an answer. I gulped down the tea offered to me returning the empty cup to the man. "Can I add you some more?" he asked. I shook my head springing up to my feet to stalk outside.

I walked to the group of people outside. I circled them walking round and round. "You are making me dizzy, can you please stop moving around." Mylar told me the moment the mind link opened. "Take this things to the forest and murder them, we cannot allow them amongst us, they are a threat to our security." I snarled. My voice rumbling as it tore through me.

"You can't do that there are kids amongst them." Mylar protested . "Well kill the elders, leave the children with us but if I discover anything suspicious of them, I will have them killed too" I threatened playing with their minds trying to figure out if they could speak or not but they didn't move a muscle.

"They don't understand our language, are they from Mars?" I asked Mylar. She shrugged off her shoulders.

"Hey you, have you ransacked their belongings?" I asked one of the men and he said, "Yes Alpha, but we couldn't get any hint of where they are coming from" He said. "We will go through their stuff again ourselves maybe we shall detect something you could not see." Mylar spoke and I nodded in agreement.

We were then shown to a room filled with bags and suitcases. We didn't waste any more time as we embarked on thorough inspection of their luggages one by one, shaking, sniffing and reading their t-shirts. Just when I was about to give up, I saw a journal in one of the suitcases. On perusing through the journal, I found notes on how to temper with test results, how to slip into our pack house and finally how to murder me. I passed the journal to Mylar.

"What is this?" She asked, perplexed.

"Just read it." I answered her.

"OK," She said going through the journal. What riddled me was that she seemed calm and wasn't surprised.

She rummaged through the rest of the papers and handed the journal back to me, blood drained from my body, I snarled, recognizing the names written on the back cover signed ANIA TALIA .

"You have a traitor living with you my Alpha!" Mylar stated.

I worked the whole day with Rina. I was glad that we had become so close to the point of doing house chores together. After we finished cleaning the entire pack house ensuring everything was in order, we walked into the kitchen to assist chefs with dinner preparation and serving. After everyone had dinner we cleaned up and sat on the living area to enjoy a movie with others, then Joe came to me saying in a serious tone....

"Luna it is time I walked you to your room."

"Just wait a little longer, please?" I pleaded.

"I'm sorry Luna, I insist! The Alpha wants you in bed by 8 PM,"

"Fine, stop calling me Luna," I echoed. His lips tugged up in the corners of his mouth as he nodded.

The title Luna only sounded special when it came from Hunter .

I bade Rina goodbye feeling a little sad that I had to leave. My sadness worsened when I entered Hunter's room because his sweet scent filled the room, I then walked to the bathroom cleaned up and jumped to bed rolling all over it. I coiled myself up to the comforter, soaking myself into his overpowering scent, inhaling it.

However, a sharp pain twinged in my chest because my Hunter wasn't in that bed with me.

I was still squirming and rolling across the bed when Joe walked in. I froze...then growled at him with a threatening voice. I was startled and cut off the muffled growl abruptly when I realized what I had done to Joe. He was stupefied!

"Sorry, Joe," I quickly apologized.

"Don't be. Hunter was worried you may fret without him. It must be hard to be away from him," he said placing a pill with water on a table by the side of the bed.

"If you get too uncomfortable in his absence, you can take them, they are sleeping pills. You can put on some of his clothes. It will help," he said before I nodded and left the room. I got out of the bed and put on one Hunter's shirts debating whether I could hold down my fret or take the pills. I thought against it.

I tossed and turned all night, my stomach cramping, a pain I couldn't explain ravaged through me. The pain was almost crippling me as it writhed through. Things were manic and delirious. I snapped snarling and pacing the room. I could not tell what was wrong with me, but my instinct was urging me to go and look for Hunter. I must have started crying because the door bursted open, and I burrowed under the comforter on the bed. I growled thunderously, as I tore off the bed, about to attack, before stopping when Joe grabbed my arms!

"Ania it is me, your Beta." I shook my head and clutched my chest. Embarrassment washed over me, but it was nothing compared to the pain I felt. The distress and anguish in my chest hurt most.

"What is wrong with me?" I cried, collapsing on the ground.

"You're fretting. It's natural. Try mind-linking the Alpha. Maybe speaking him will help ease the discomfort." Joe re-assured me. I nodded and tried mind linking the Alpha but I was blocked. I explained the same to Joe and he said, "I will call him through the phone."

Joe pulled his phone from his pocket and called Hunter. I listened to it ring before he stepped closer to the bathroom. They spoke a little bit but couldn't decipher what they were saying, apparently Hunter sounded angry.

"Alpha, she is right here; I will put her on" Hunter barked something back to him.

"What do you mean?" Joe asked. I could have sworn I heard him say he didn't want to speak to me.

"Can you at least tell me what is wrong?" Joe asked.

"But Hunter, she is fretting, could you please maybe just talk to her on the phone until she falls asleep?"

"Alpha?" Joe looked at his phone before I saw his eyes glaze over.

A few minutes later, Lemmy, one of the men in the pack house, a Gamma, stepped into the room and watched me warily, fortunately, I had calmed up now and wanted to know what happened to Hunter.

"Can you get a hold of anyone? Hunter seems to be blocking me out," Joe asked Lemmy. We watched his eyes glaze over, eventually, Lemmy shook his head and shrugged.

"Have you heard anything about what has happened?" Joe asked him.

"No Beta, Alpha Hunter and Mylar usually dont contact me directly" Lemmy answered. Joe nodded his head, muttering under his breath.

"Get Rina and bring her here. She might help," the Beta said while my nails dug into the floor as I tried to figure out why Hunter did not want to speak with me.

"As soon as I get a hold of him, I will put him on, Ania, but hopefully Rina can help you rest," Joe continued re-assuring me. I nodded and waited for her to arrive.

Joe kept trying to get hold of Hunter. However, he kept rejecting his calls and blocking the Mind link.

Rina came, and for a while, I was restless. She climbed in the bed and stayed comforting me while I cried myself to sleep. Both of us had no idea of this fretting thing. All I knew was I never wanted to experience it again. It was horrible, as that night turned out to be the longest suffering ever experienced. I woke up occasionally trying to wake my wolf to talk to her but she had gone back to being dormant. My wolf had also absconded me.

When I woke the next morning, Rina was no longer beside me. I had no doubt that she left when I fell asleep . My mouth watered, as the pain returned back when I suddenly found out that I had wandered into the closet. I lay beneath all his hanging clothes. I could not even remember walking in there, let alone pulling the clothes from the hangers. It looked like I had created a bird's nest in the closet out of his clothes.

The closet door opened causing hairs on my arms to stand as a fresh scent hit my nosetrils, I didn't like it as it was clashing with Hunter's sweet scent.

Joe froze as he walked into the room, calling out to me. Yet I couldn't take my eyes off the intruder. Lemmy walked in with a tray of food and my eyes tracked him when Joe's hand fell on his shoulder.

"Don't move" He murmured, not removing his eyes from me.

Lemmy looked at where Joe was staring when I heard a loud growl, making me jump at the sound, looking for where it came from. Did I make that noise?

"Ania, Lemmy will place the tray down, and we will leave, okay?" Joe said.

Why was he talking to me like that?

I glanced down, wondering why he was acting weird, when I realized my fingers were bleeding and claws had slipped out.

Startled, I looked at them, holding my hands up, examining them.

"What?" I stopped, my speech sounding slurred.

I touched my mouth to find my canines had slipped out.

My gasp of shock was loud in my ears!

"You're fine, Ania. You are just nesting," Joe said.

I sat in the music room the whole day still fretting.

Hunter still hadn't returned, and no one had heard from him. I was on the edge.

Close to six in the evening I heard car tires screeching on the gravel as children shouts filled the air. My heart sped up as I listened to the doors closing in the distance, and I knew he was back.

"That would be our mate." Claudia finally came out and I scowled at her for leaving me alone when I really needed her. I felt giddy knowing I was about to see him. I had missed him so much and one night away felt like a lifetime.

I rushed out of the room racing up the stairs, my Wolf screaming. "MATE...!MATE.....!MATE!"

My entire world stood still the moment I stepped into the corridor and spotted Hunter at the other end just about to enter our room. A gasp escaped me. My chest restricted, and my heart swelled with happiness as I stared at him.

My feet moved before I could stifle down my excitement, my footsteps loud on the floors. My mate, was standing talking to Joe and Mylar. They seemed to be in a deep conversation as I got closer.

"Hunter!" I shrieked excitedly and rushed toward him. I had never been so happy. My heart leaped in my chest as I raced toward him. My stomach filled with butterflies; I was that excited.

His entire body tensed, his posture straightened, and he stole the air from my lungs when he turned around to face me.

"Hunter," I whispered, trying to contain my excitement as I rushed toward him when suddenly my entire body seized mid-stride. Everything in me locked up painfully, and I felt like I was punched in the stomach.

"Halt!" one word, one full-blown command, and it was given by my mate. My entire body became immobile as his aura rushed over me and weighed on me heavily. So heavy I found it difficult to breathe, and I finally took in his expression.

A murderous glare pinned me. The look he gave me made my chest hurt. Pain rippled through me as l tried to move; only my limbs were paralysed. What did I do? Did I interrupt? I didn't understand. He was all happy and cuddly when he left yesterday. Did I do something wrong?
