From the moment we entered Kyle's penthouse the loud music already had us feeling slightly drunk. The smell of alcohol hung heavy in the air with the mix of cigarettes. My club with their club including players from different clubs were in the mix with their friends. Nearly all three levels of his penthouse were packed and I could barely make it to the bar without someone congratulating me.
A group of girls were already following Demyan as we made our way to the bar. I figured I was handsome. Women and men always threw themselves in my direction but Demyan's freckles, large curly hair, caramel skin and the fact he did not like much clothes on his body seemed to be a winning factor when it came to pulling in crowds.
I was an uninteresting brick wall next to him.
"I think I spotted Connor," he half shouted in my ear so I could hear him over the booming music.
"Oh kill me now," I ran my hands down my face. A drunk Connor was not a fun Connor. Not that I even believed the man knew what fun meant. My eyes followed Demyan's and there by the lounge with his Instagram model girlfriend firmly on his lap was Connor. It was one of the rare moments when he was laughing and looking like he did not have an absolute care in the world.
His hair was brushed back as he wore black jeans, a matching thin jersey and white sneakers. He never wore jewellery so his outfits were always sterile and clean. He did not have much of a fashion sense to begin with but whatever his sponsors wanted him to wear he wore. The only thing he ever cared about was Rugby and that was it.
It surprised me to see he was here. We all knew he never took losses well but I figured he was kinder with himself because they were still in the tournament. It would have probably gone a lot differently if they were knocked out.
His smile was stretching from ear to ear and occasionally he would press a kiss to his girlfriend's lips. I was not even sure what her name was. He went for the same cookie cutter look.
Even across the dimly lit room it seemed he could feel my gaze as he slightly turned his head to look in my direction. His eyes scanned the crowd before landing on me and the bright smile he had reserved for just a few instantly vanished.
"If he thinks he can come here and tousle you around I will cave his face in," Demyan glared. I had no doubt my brother could fight. He and I had gotten into plenty of our bar fights when we were much younger. Yet I was not sure what much damage he could do in baggy cargo pants with a fishnet stocking based corset.
"Let's leave the violence for another day Rambo," I laughed even though I could feel my skin heat up under Connor's gaze. "He won't start anything. He never really does."
Demyan looked at me like a concerned older brother which made me feel all so incredibly small. "You know if it really bothers you why don't you speak to your coach."
"Connor and I aren't that serious," I shrugged then turned back to the bar to have a massive gulp of my whiskey. It burned going down my throat but it distracted me from Connor's eyes drilling holes at the back of my head. "Listen I have a handle on it okay. It's just a sick game we have with each other."
Demyan sighed, "Well if it gets bad I'll ring Uncle Vlad up."
My gasp filled the space around us before I burst out laughing, "Uncle Vlad will kill him! It's not that desperate."
He gave me a smile so bright I would have thought the sun was in the room, "We'll see." We sat at the bar for a few minutes as my team players kept on coming around as we took shots together. Eventually Kyle came around and with a sly grin he wrapped his arms around Demyan's waist. He reached Demyan's shoulder in height but that did not seem to stop him.
Everyone seemed to watch with eager eyes as they danced together but when Kyle tried to kiss him, my brother easily slipped out of his arms and went over to a few mutual friends he had recognised.
"Burn," Aaron teased, which made Kyle look murderous. "What in the world were you trying to do?" Everyone around us burst out laughing until Connor's deep voice interrupted our chatter.
"Don't get affected by such things," Connor looked down arrogantly at Kyle down the length of his nose, "Such things don't look good for the team."
"Oh just because you're a prude doesn't mean everyone else is," Kyle rolled his eyes, "Plus if there's one man I'd be interested in, Demyan would be top tier."
"That's my brother," I warned, "Who is in a relationship by the way."
Kyle's obnoxious laugh almost made me see red, "According to our chats he doesn't seem very keen about that. Isn't he into men anyway? What the hell is he doing with that girl?"
"Don't label him," I hissed. I knew I labelled Demyan all the time but he was my brother. We made fun of each other all the time but we knew it was not personal. Someone from the outside however...
"I guess she's more of a wig," Kyle shrugged with a laugh, "He doesn't seem like the type to last for long without spreading his legs for some man."
Before I could even stop myself my fist collided with Kyle's face nearly causing an all out war. Strong arms wrapped around me as I tried to lunge for Kyle again as he had landed on the floor, blood already pouring from his upper lip. I thrashed in their arms as they carried me out of the penthouse and into the much more quiet hallway.
"Fucking let me go," I slapped their hands away from me. When I spun around I did not think I would see Connor as he looked at me half perplexed and annoyed.
"Can you live for one single second without causing a scene?"
