Chapter 19: Invasion
Greg laughed as Dominick raced after his daughter. Then he relaxed against the chair, feeling both exhausted and renewed from their conversation. He needed to speak with Daniella, to hear her voice and just ... connect with her. He grabbed his phone and called Mya, surprised when Daniella answered instead.
"Greg? Is everything okay?" she asked.
"It is now. I missed you."
He heard her shuffle in the background and then the gentle slide of a chair. "I missed you too." Her voice dropped lower. "It's different without you here."
"I feel the same way." He ruffled his hair. "The meeting took longer than expected. I'd hoped to be on my way back to you by now. I didn't want to leave you, Ella. I'm sorry for not being there when you needed someone."
"No, please, it's okay. I know you didn't want to go, but you had to. And even though you weren't here, you still helped me. What you said before you left ... it meant a lot to me."
