Mattered

It was a bright day. A grand day.

"Sir, the men are getting impatient. We've already given them enough time but there are no responses. They're clearly stalling."

"I know that," the man said.

Walls of cloth, stacks of paperwork, a lone table, and a chair.

Low grumbles, distant choir.

And a lingering bad taste.

"Then your orders," the soldier asked.

"I have none, at least not right now. They're yet to respond to any of my pleas," he sighed. "I really wanted to avoid a full confrontation. But we've been left with no choice."

He was supposed to be at his kid's birthday today. And yet he was stuck with this ragtag army and this dangerous job. Actually, he shouldn't have even been here. But the nobles were too afraid to come to the battlefield and ended up forcing him to. As a soldier had he had to obey.
