A Breath of Fresh Air

I won't bother writing a long synopsis. Tbh I just wanted to try writing a new one, maybe I'll have the motivation to write this one instead of my other novels. I don't even know why I'm explaining this in here. But if your curious about the novel then Ill write a 1 sentence long synopsis. A new VR game took the world by storm and so, our MC decided to play it.

Happy Death

The two attacks struck each other. Calvin's sickle sank deep into the bears claw, slowing it down for a moment and allowing him to block with his other arm.

The bears claw continued forward and it hit Calvin's blocking arm, leaving a deep gash on his arm and pushing him back a few steps from the impact.

Calvin groaned from the searing pain due to the cuts in his arms and the numbness coming from his two arms only made his situation worse.

He backed off quickly while moving his arms around to shake off the numbness. He then used inspect and looked at the damage numbers that appeared in order to know more information about his enemy.

[Red bear, 1st grade common]

Level: 5

Hp: 190/200

-25

The first damage is when his sickle hit the bear's paw while the other two is for him. He guessed that the first damage is when their attacks met and the second one is when he blocked it with his arm.

'Its attacks are so powerful and it also has a lot more health. And it's level 5?! Wtf?!' Calvin frowned as he watched the bear howl in pain while glaring at him.

'Should I risk it?' He thought as he nervously looked at his remaining 30 health points while watching the bear when all of a sudden it rushed at him.

Calvin flinched in fear for a second before he shook it off again and thought to himself with a frown. 'You know what... fuck this hesitation. I always hesitate when it comes to decisions. I hate it! And I hate getting scared by animals even more!'

Calvin hurriedly opened his status and allocated his status points into 3 agility and 2 strength. He changed into a fighting stance and waited for the bear to come.

'If I die then so be it. At least I'll know the feeling of death in this game. And I'll make it worth it by having fun fighting you bastard!' Calvin thought with fierce and excited eyes while grinning madly.

The bear finally comes in attacking range and it swiped at Calvin again with his claws. Calvin ducked and swung his sickle at the knee of the bear.

The bear howled and slowed down a bit but it didn't stop attacking. It continued to use it claws to slash at Calvin. Sometimes it would bite or even charge at him directly, trying to tackle Calvin down to the ground.

Calvin fought desperately, trying to dodge to the very best of his abilities. He knew that he couldn't afford even a single hit as he knew that it would be the end of him.

Not even a minute passed and Calvin already felt physically and mentally tired from dodging most of the attacks. He can only attacked a few times as there were only a few chances for him to attack.

The feeling of death started to encroach upon Calvin making him scared and afraid. But he gritted his teeth and pushed forward with the fight using the excitement he's also feeling as his motivation.

The reason for his happines? Its because of the fight itself. He had always dreamed of real life combat and now that he's experiencing it himself, it made him feel excited. The fact that he's learning and improving himself and also fighting his fears made him proud of himself that he's growing.

And this thought made him smile even in the face of death. He already knew that he will lose and die since he's too tired from dodging. If he didn't get ambushed right after fighting the wolves maybe he would win but unfortunately he didn't.

But since it already happened, then he will accept it and face it with everything he got.

And so, the fight continued on for a minute and Calvin finally got hit with an attack, leaving him with a meager hp.

Seeing the bear attacking again, just like the first clash between them, Calvin attacked back with his sickle.

At the very brink of death, Calvin willed his mana to move again intending to attack with everything he has left. As if responding to his will, the mana finally showed movement and gathered towards his arm, making it glow in a faint blue light.

Calvin grinned happily as he finally achieved the feat of using mana.

Their attacks met again and the bear growled in pain as the sickle left a deep wound on its arms while its remaining hp has been reduced to a little over 100.

As for Calvin, the last of his hp finally disappeared and he turned into disappearing particles of white light.

With his body disappearing soon, Calvin thought with a grin, 'To think that in this game I will learn to be decisive for once and face my fears. Indeed...this game... is fun...'

The particles disappeared into air and what's left behind on the ground is the sickle that he's been using from the start.

Back to the village, Calvin spawned near the fountains again.

Calvin stood still for a second and remembered what he felt when he died, causing chills to run through his entire body.

'That black void seems so eerie jeez. Did the devs really have to do that? Good thing I only stayed there for less than 10 seconds if not...'

His hairs stood on end when he thought of staying in that void longer.

Shaking his head, he looked at his inventory and saw that his sickle is gone.

Calvin sighed, 'That sucks. My first weapon dropped. Even though its nothing special, its still the first weapon I used in my life. Also that glove that the wolf dropped. Oh well.'

He looked through his status and saw the debuffs he got from dying.

[Death Penalty]

Effect 1: Reduce stats by 10% for 10 minutes.

Effect 2: Any used or unused stat points from the most recent level up will not be regained until the user returned to the level prior to death.

After reading it, he indeed sees that the stats he used were now useless and it wasn't actually giving him any boost. He also felt a bit weaker than before.

Sighing once more, he thought to himself. 'Although its sad, at least I ganed something from it. I learned to be decisive and fight my fears. Learning to use mana is a bonus as well. All is well for me.'

Calvin smiled brightly and once more felt proud of himself. Then looking at his empty hand, he decided to spend his weakened time by buying a new weapon for him.

So off he goes as he walked forward towards the busy streets of the village, still with that bright smile on his face.
