The Systems Challenge

In a world that is aware of other worlds and systems, a reality show was created to have participants receive a system and face challenges. All for the entertainment of the world's that cam view it. All participants have no idea about other worlds actually existing, let alone something like this going on. Elmo is a young man who had been shopping when he was chosen to take part in this challenge. Part of him is intrigued by the idea of the challenges, but most of him would rather just go home. If only that was an option. The following are the main challenges in order in the story: Challenge #1: defeating the starting dungeon Challenge #2: prevent the assassination of the king Challenge #3: defeat the fire dragon Challenge #4: locate and capture a firebird Challenge #5: There will be no graphic descriptions of any mature content. When such material will appear, it will either be lime or just glossed over. I'm writing this as I go along. If you have any suggestions or thoughts I'd be happy to hear them. Cover art is AI generated If anyone has any thoughts or comments about this book they'd like to say, but not leave a record of it here, I can be contacted at etherelemental@gmail.com

Everything's a Mess

Elin was at a loss for what to do. She had quickly given both herself and Elmo a Str enhancement and was doing her best to pull Kim down the hallway as Elmo covered their rear from the goblins that were still trying to get them. Jonas was stumbling along, holding a deep gash along his left leg while holding onto the wall for support.

All that came to mind for Elin was to get out of there. She wasn't sure how long the fight had been going on, or what the consequences of her using up her MP for anything other than healing, but when she saw Kim start to falter, and the goblins attacks start to hit her, she used her sacred shot to buy enough time to pull her from the front line.

Elmo was able to use his rock spray to great effect there, but it was clear that he was only going to be able to hold them off for a little bit. Too many were pressing against each other to get to their group for Elmo to adequately keep the goblins from their group if they didn't fall back.

Glancing back, she could see Elmo using his frozen missile spell in addition to his rock spray. What Elin couldn't understand the most was how he was able to use so much magic. She couldn't imagine that he'd been able to get his MP to a level that would be pretty much inexhaustible. Yet, that's how it seemed to her.

She filed that thought away to talk to him about it later. If she had an ability like that or MP to the level that she wouldn't be able to realistically run out, then she wouldn't need to worry so much about not being able to do much outside of healing when the rest of her group were in a fight.

As it is, while she'd like to assist Elmo in trying to keep the goblins from getting to them, she knew that she needed to be the eyes of which direction they were heading in. She certainly didn't want to encounter more goblins ahead of them if she could help it.

She couldn't say how long it was that they'd been engaged in the running fight with the goblins when Elmo picked up Kim's legs and they were able to carry her and move just a little quicker. Jonas didn't seem to have too much trouble keeping up, but he did slow them down a little.

Elin wanted to try and heal him, but they could hear goblins behind them. She wasn't sure what would happen if she took the time to merely heal Jonas' wound. She was mostly hoping that they'd be able to find a room that they could hide from the goblins. Or at least something.

Elin felt like her heart was ready to pound its way out of her chest. Similar to what she had happen earlier, but not quite the same. After all, at that time things weren't looking anywhere this bad for her. Nor did she have the rest of her group to worry about.

Kim was also a major concern for her. She could tell some of the wounds on Kim's body were rather serious and needed to be either healed or treated. Sooner rather than later.

Elin was so focused on getting away from the goblins, that at first she didn't noticed the volume of the sounds from the goblins were growing distant. At first she wondered what they might be planning, but then she realized the light in the dungeon was starting to get lighter.

She heaved a sigh of relief as she realized that. While there was a chance the goblins would still appear, she was sure that she and her group, Kim especially, had just been saved by the dawn.

Yet, she still felt the need to keep moving quickly. She couldn't say why, but something tickled the back of her mind that drove her to keep moving just as quickly. She wished she knew why, but had a feeling if she knew, then it'd already be too late.

Suddenly the wall Jonas was using to support himself disappeared. Or more accurately, it turned in a way that Elin realized they could hide behind and anyone or anything pursuing them wouldn't be able to see them, because it wouldn't look like there have been a turn in the passage. It merely looked like it just went straight.

As they quickly moved out of sight of the passage they'd been in, Elin suddenly remembered the sense of smell the goblins had. She couldn't say if it was goblins that was making her so worried, but if whatever might come after them used their sense of smell to track them, then turning down this way wouldn't really help them.

"Elmo what should we do about our scent?" Elin gasped, worn out from carrying Kim, fighting, and fleeing the goblins for who knows how long and far.

Elmo looked at Elin like he didn't understand what she'd just said for a minute. Elin was about to turn to Jonas when Elmo ran back to the other passage and she heard him say, "Brimstone Fire!"

Elin wasn't sure what he'd just did, but he seemed to think it was something as he quickly came back. "What'd you do?" Elin asked quietly, not sure if she should be upset that he didn't say what he was going to do before he did it.

"I used my spell 'Brimstone Fire' to add a smell of brimstone there. Unless whatever you think might come after us a exceptionally good at smelling things, then whatever it is could get turned around by that smell," Elmo answered as he picked up Kim's legs again.

Elin merely nodded. She didn't understand what brimstone was, but didn't want to argue with Elmo about it. At least not right now when they were still so close to the first passage.

They kept moving along and Elin couldn't say for how long, but eventually they reached a room. One that was rather familiar to her. She saw stairs in it and what looked like a small fire in addition to the remains of what used to be a wooden table.

She remembered this room. This was the room they'd spent their first night, not only in this dungeon, but also in this entire competition. If nothing else, Elin was sure that they'd be able to rest here and recover. Although, she wasn't sure if they'd be able to return to full strength before they needed to move again.

"How about you guys rest first and I'll keep watch," Elin offered.

"You look like you're about to drop as well," Jonas remarked. "If you heal my leg, I'll take first watch."

Elin shook her head. "I'll be fine. If you guys rest, I'll have time then to either heal Kim's wounds or at least work on treating them, including your leg, Jonas," Elin replied.

"It sounds good to me," Elmo replied. "Though, where do you want to have Kim moved to first?"

"Oh, against this wall," Elin replied, heading towards the wall that was to her right when she first entered the room.

When they reached the place, Elin and Elmo set Kim down and Elin moved to take a look at Jonas' leg. It didn't look too good, but she couldn't say that it was awful. She was mostly just glad that it wasn't something she'd had to deal with herself. Not that she told Jonas that.

Elin placed her hand on his leg as she called out twice, "Minor Heal."

When Elin removed her hands from Jonas' leg, his wound could hardly be seen. "Thanks," Jonas said quietly as he leaned against the wall across from where Elin had rested Kim against.

Elin nodded in response and went back to treat Kim. Elmo had first started to rest right by where they'd set Kim, but when Elin came to treat Kim, Elmo seemed to realize something and sprang up from where he was sitting and rushed away. Elin wasn't sure what that was about, but she wasn't going to complain either. It at least allowed her to be more alone with Kim.

Elin didn't bother looking to where Elmo moved to. She only cared that he wasn't still there. Elin looked down at Kim as she knelt next to the woman and lifted her leather armor shirt a little so she could reach under it and feel Kim's skin, which at the moment was pretty slick with blood.

Elin wasn't sure how much HP Kim still had, but worried that it was a lot lower than either of them would like. So, Elin moved her hands up towards Kim's chest, just below her breasts and found the wound in her chest that concerned Elin the most.

Healing it wasn't that big of a deal for Elin, but once it was healed, she could hear Kim's breathing even out. She couldn't help but smile at that. She briefly consulted her stats before confirming she had enough MP to get the rest of Kim's body healed.

When she was done, the one thing she wished she had was something to clean the blood off of Kim's body as well as her own hands. She liked touching Kim's body, but at the moment she wasn't sure that she should do that right now. She couldn't say if Kim would be happy about Elin spreading the blood to where Elin really wanted to touch at the moment.

Sighing, she pulled Kim's leather armor shirt down and instead contented herself with laying against her. She couldn't see Kim's stats, so she could only hope that Kim would be fine and wouldn't be in danger or running out of HP when it came time for the next battle to take place.
