Eve tossed restlessly on her bed that night, she had been
unable to think beyond what she had seen. She had been so
disturbed that she didn't finish her classes for the day before
heading home. "Who was she supposed to help?", she
wondered. Was it his mother? No, Mrs A seemed perfectly
fine the last time they spoke but then appearances could be
deceiving. Who or what could be hurting Mrs A that her son
needed help? Why not ask the father?! "Wait!" Eve gasped
and sat up "No way!" She thought. That was not even up for
debate, Mr A couldn't be hurting his wife, or could he? Those were the questions that filled Eve's mind and gave her
sleepless nights. She had to do something fast.
Eve got up from the bed, finally accepting the fact that she
was not going to sleep that night. Rather than wasting the
night brooding over that, she would go out there again and
find out what was going on. Checking her watch, she realised
it was almost time for "Code Red" to alert her. "Not this
time," Eve said, "I'm coming to get you". Dressed in a black
pair of jeans and a black t-shirt, Eve wore her Converse
sneakers and a grey baseball cap. If she wanted to be an
investigative journalist, she had to do it right. She took her
phone and set it to camera mode in case she needed to record
anything sinister, then she quietly left her flat.
Instead of going to the side of the house where Josh's
room was, Eve took a detour to the window further back of
the house. The window was shut tight and it was dark inside.
Thinking quickly, Eve went to Josh's window, took out her
phone and flashed the torchlight." Come on Josh" Eve
muttered when there was no movement. She did it again as
she looked around surreptitiously. Within minutes, she noticed
some movement at the window and she saw Josh put his
hands on his lips signalling her to be quiet. Eve quickly
ducked down in case anyone was with him. After five
minutes, Josh came up to the window with another note
"THANK YOU FOR COMING" he had written. Eve nodded
and whispered "The door," she said "I need to come in. Josh took out another fresh sheet and scribbled on it,
raising it to the window so Eve could read "Not that, they are
dangerous " Eve read "they"? Who is dangerous to Josh? Now
Eve was more curious than ever. Something was happening in
that house and she was going to find out what it was. Before
she could ask who the "they" were, Josh was up with another
message "they will kill her, call the police" he wrote. Eve
nearly laughed out, the child knew nothing of the Nigerian
police force. "I need to be inside, Josh" Eve
whispered loudly "Now!" she almost shouted. Josh nodded and
out came another note "Come to the back". Eve all but flew to
the back of the house where she met the door ajar. "Good
boy," she thought as she walked into the shadow of the
unknown.
