Chapter 49

“Good thing we’ve been throwing our bags in the trunk and driving to work every day since this began,” Dani said. “Now, tell me.”

“Mama and Florence were found in a tiny apartment in Siena. They were both bound and gagged, and had been drugged. Florence is dead, and my mother is in some sort of coma.”

“The driver?”

“No sign of him.”

As soon as we were in the air and had an ETA, I called Sal and gave him the information.

“Have the police released any information to the public?” I said.

“No.”

“It might be a good idea if they were to withhold the information.”

“I asked them to, but they won’t listen to me.”

“I know somebody in Rome who knows somebody they’ll listen to. Who’s in charge in Siena?”

He gave me a name.

“Thanks, Sal. I’ll see what I can do.”

I called Joel, gave him an update, and asked him to see what he could do about keeping the news quiet.

“I’ll take care of it, buddy,” he said, and hung up.

“Dani?” I said.
